Abstract

A golf club head includes a body defining an interior cavity. The body includes a sole positioned at a bottom portion of the golf club head, a crown positioned at a top portion, and a skirt positioned around a periphery between the sole and crown. The body has a forward portion and a rearward portion. The club head includes a face positioned at the forward portion of the body. The face defines a striking surface having an ideal impact location at a golf club head origin. Embodiments include club heads for a fairway wood that at least one of a high moment of inertia, a low center-of-gravity, a thin crown and a high coefficient of restitution.

Claims

1. A golf club head, comprising:

a body defining an interior cavity, a sole portion positioned at a bottom portion of the golf club head, a crown portion positioned at a top portion, and a skirt portion positioned around a periphery between the sole and crown, the body also having a forward portion and a rearward portion and a maximum above ground height; and

a face positioned at the forward portion of the body;

wherein,

the body height is less than about 46 mm,

the golf club head has an above ground center-of-gravity location, Zup, less than about 18.5 mm, and

a center of gravity horizontally rearward of a center the face less than about 30 mm and a coefficient of restitution (COR) at the center of the face of at least 0.82.

2. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the COR at the center of the face is about 0.82.

3. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the face has a loft angle greater than about 13 degrees.

4. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein the golf club head has a volume of not greater than 240 cm³.

5. The golf club head of claim 1, wherein a front to back depth (D_ch) of the club head is greater than about 85 mm.

6. A golf club head, comprising:

a body defining an interior cavity, a sole portion positioned at a bottom portion of the golf club head, a crown portion positioned at a top portion, and a skirt portion positioned around a periphery between the sole and crown, the body also having a forward portion and a rearward portion and a maximum above ground height; and

a face positioned at the forward portion of the body;

wherein,

the body height is less than about 46 mm,

the face has a loft angle greater than about 13 degrees, and

the golf club head has a center of gravity (CG) projection of less than about 3 mm above a center of the face.

7. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein the CG projection is less than about 1.4 mm above a center of the face.

8. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein the coefficient of restitution is about 0.82.

9. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein the coefficient of restitution is 0.82 or greater.

10. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein a volume of the golf club head is less than about 240 cm³.

11. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein a front to back depth (D_ch) of the club head is greater than about 85 mm.

12. The golf club head of claim 6, wherein the crown has a thickness less than about 0.65 mm over at least about 70% of the crown.

13. A golf club head, comprising:

a body defining an interior cavity, a sole portion positioned at a bottom portion of the golf club head, a crown portion positioned at a top portion, and a skirt portion positioned around a periphery between the sole and crown, the body also having a forward portion and a rearward portion and a maximum above ground height;

a face positioned at the forward portion of the body;

a channel defined in the sole adjacent the face; and

added weight positioned rearward of the channel.

14. The golf club head of claim 13, wherein the channel has a greatest vertical dimension of at least 30% of the height of the face.

15. The golf club head of claim 13, wherein the channel has a greatest vertical dimension of at least 20% of the height of the face.

16. The golf club head of claim 13, wherein the coefficient of restitution measured at a center of the face is about 0.82.

17. The golf club head of claim 13, wherein the coefficient of restitution measured at a center of the face is at least 0.82.

18. The golf club head of claim 13, further comprising:

one or more weight ports formed in the body; and

at least one weight configured to be retained at least partially within one of the one or more weight ports.

19. A golf club head, comprising:

a body defining an interior cavity, a sole portion positioned at a bottom portion of the golf club head, a crown portion positioned at a top portion, and a skirt portion positioned around a periphery between the sole and crown, the body also having a forward portion and a rearward portion and a maximum above ground height; and

a face positioned at the forward portion of the body;

wherein, the body height is less than about 46 mm,

the golf club head has an above ground center-of-gravity location, Zup, less than about 18.5 mm, and

a center of gravity horizontally rearward of a center the face less than about 30 mm and a coefficient of restitution (COR) at about 2 mm below the center of the face of at least 0.80.

20. The golf club head of claim 19, wherein the coefficient of restitution at about 2 mm below the center of the face is at least 0.82.

21. The golf club head of claim 19, further comprising a channel defined in the sole adjacent the face and added weight received in the channel.

22. A golf club head, comprising:

a body defining an interior cavity, a sole portion positioned at a bottom portion of the golf club head, a crown portion positioned at a top portion, and a skirt portion positioned around a periphery between the sole and crown, the body also having a forward portion and a rearward portion and a maximum above ground height; and

a face positioned at the forward portion of the body;

wherein,

the maximum above ground height of the body is less than about 46 mm,

the face has a loft angle greater than about 16.5 degrees, and

the golf club head has a center of gravity (CG) projection that is lower than about 3.5 mm above a center of the face.

23. The golf club head of claim 22, wherein the CG projection is lower than about 2.0 mm above a center of the face.

24. The golf club head of claim 22, wherein the CG projection is lower than about 1.0 mm above a center of the face.

25. The golf club head of claim 22, wherein a coefficient of restitution of the golf club head measured at the center of the face 0.80 or greater.

26. The golf club head of claim 22, wherein a coefficient of restitution of the golf club head measured at the center of the face 0.81 or greater.

27. The golf club head of claim 22, wherein a coefficient of restitution of the golf club head measured at the center of the face 0.82 or greater.

28. The golf club head of claim 22, wherein a volume of the golf club head is less than about 240 cm³.

29. The golf club head of claim 22, wherein a front to back depth (D_ch) of the club head is greater than about 85 mm.

30. The golf club head of claim 22, further comprising a channel defined in the sole adjacent the face.

31. The golf club head of claim 22, further comprising a slot defined in the sole adjacent the face.

32. A golf club head, comprising:

a body defining an interior cavity, a sole portion positioned at a bottom portion of the golf club head, a crown portion positioned at a top portion, and a skirt portion positioned around a periphery between the sole and crown, the body also having a forward portion and a rearward portion and a maximum above ground height; and

a face positioned at the forward portion of the body;

wherein,

the maximum above ground height of the body is less than about 46 mm,

the face has a loft angle greater than about 13 degrees, and

the golf club head has a center of gravity (CG) projection that is lower than about 0.5 mm above a center of the face.

33. The golf club head of claim 32, wherein the CG projection is lower than a center of the face.

34. The golf club head of claim 32, wherein the CG projection is lower than about 0.5 mm below a center of the face.

35. The golf club head of claim 32, wherein a coefficient of restitution of the golf club head measured at the center of the face is 0.82 or greater.

36. The golf club head of claim 32, wherein a coefficient of restitution of the golf club head measured at the center of the face 0.81 or greater.

37. The golf club head of claim 32, wherein a coefficient of restitution of the golf club head measured at the center of the face 0.80 or greater.

38. The golf club head of claim 32, wherein a volume of the golf club head is less than about 240 cm³.

39. The golf club head of claim 32, wherein a front to back depth (D_ch) of the golf club head is greater than about 85 mm.

40. The golf club head of claim 32, further comprising a channel defined in the sole adjacent the face.

41. The golf club head of claim 32, further comprising a slot defined in the sole adjacent the face.

42. A golf club head, comprising:

a body defining an interior cavity, a sole portion positioned at a bottom portion of the golf club head, a crown portion positioned at a top portion, and a skirt portion positioned around a periphery between the sole and crown, the body also having a forward portion and a rearward portion and a maximum above ground height; and

a face positioned at the forward portion of the body;

wherein, the body height is less than about 46 mm,

the golf club head has an above ground center-of-gravity location, Zup, less than about 18.5 mm, and

a center of gravity horizontally rearward of a center the face less than about 30 mm and a coefficient of restitution (COR) measured at the center of the face of at least 0.81.

43. The golf club head of claim 42, wherein the coefficient of restitution measured at the center of the face is at least 0.82.

44. The golf club head of claim 42, further comprising a channel defined in the sole adjacent the face and added weight received in the channel.
