Abstract

This invention relates to an antimicrobial sanitizing composition in the form of a gel or cream that contains an alcohol in an amount of at least 55% by weight. The sanitizer is capable of disinfecting and providing prolonged antimicrobial property to a variety of surfaces, including the skin, without causing, drying, cracking, redness or irritation. In addition to alcohol, the sanitizer contains an anionic phospholipid in a controlled concentration as well as components conventionally found in skin creams and gels such as emulsifiers, emollients, moisturizers, rheology modifiers, and neutralizers. The anionic phospholipid enables use of the composition without the user experiencing dryness or irritation and the feeling of a greasy and unpleasant residue on the skin following use.

Claims

1. A sanitizer in the form of gel or cream, said sanitizer having a pH of at least 6.8 and comprising at least 55 percent by weight alcohol;

one or more emollients, emulsifiers, and rheology modifiers; and

an anionic phospholipid in an amount of at least 0.10 percent by weight of the total formulation.

2. The sanitizer of claim 1 where the anionic phospholipid is present in an amount of from 0.25 to 2.5 percent of the sanitizer formulation.

3. The sanitizer of claim 2 where the anionic phospholipid is added as a component of a phospholipid mixture and is present in the phospholipid mixture in an amount of at least 5 percent by weight and the total phospholipid content of the sanitizer.

4. The sanitizer of claim 3 where anionic phospholipid component in the mixture of phospholipids varies between 8 and 15 percent by weight.

5. The sanitizer of claim 3 where the phospholipid mixture is free of cationic phospholipids.

6. The sanitizer of claim 2 where the anionic phospholipid is phosphatidylethanolamine.

7. The sanitizer of claim 1 containing at least 60 percent by weight alcohol.

8. The sanitizer of claim 1 where the alcohol is a C1 to C4 alcohol in an amount of from 60 to 75% by weight of the total formulation.

9. The sanitizer of claim 8 where the alcohol is ethanol.

10. The sanitizer of claim 1 having a pH varying between 7.0 and 8.0.

11. The sanitizer of claim 1 where the rheology modifier is present in an amount to provide a viscosity of at least 2,500 cps.

The sanitizer of claim 11 where the rheology modifier is selected from the group consisting essentially of carboxylic acid polymers, crosslinked polyacrylate polymers, polyacrylamide polymers, polysaccharides, and gums and is present in an amount of at least 2.5 percent by weight of the sanitizer.

13. The sanitizer of claim 11 where the rheology modifier is a crosslinked polyacrylate polymer present in an amount of from 2.5 to 8.0 weight percent of the sanitizer.

The sanitizer of claim 1 where the emollient is a member selected from the group consisting essentially of include oils, aloe, fatty esters, glycerol esters, propylene glycol esters, alkoxylated carboxylic acids, alkoxylated alcohols, fatty alcohols, fatty acids, and combinations thereof present in an amount of from 1.0 t0 8.0 weight percent by weight of the sanitizer.

15. The sanitizer of claim 14 where the emollient is selected from the group of isopropyl-palmitate, isopropyl-myristate, aloe, and mixtures thereof and is present in an amount of from 3.0 to 6.0 of the sanitizer.

16. A sanitizer in the form of gel or cream, said sanitizer having a pH of at least 6.8 and comprising at least 60 weight percent of a C1 to C4 alcohol;

one or more emollients in an amount of from 1.0 to 8.0 weighty percent of the sanitizer, emulsifiers in an amount of from 0.1 to 3.5 weight percent of the sanitizer, and rheology modifiers in an amount of from 2.5 to 8.0 percent of the sanitizer; and

an anionic phospholipid in an amount of at least 0.1 to 3.0 weight percent of the total formulation.

17. The sanitizer of claim 16 where the anionic phospholipid is present in an amount of from 0.25 to 2.5 percent of the formulation.

18. The sanitizer of claim 17 where the anionic phospholipid is added as a component of a phospholipid mixture and is present in the mixture in an amount of at least 5 weight percent and the total phospholipid content.

19. The sanitizer of claim 18 where anionic phospholipid component in the mixture of phospholipids varies between 8 and 15 weight percent and the phospholipid mixture is free of cationic phospholipids.

20. The sanitizer of claim 16 where the anionic phospholipid is phosphatidylethanolamine.

21. A method for sanitizing the skin, said method comprising the step of applying a sanitizer to the skin in the form of gel or cream, said sanitizer having a pH of at least 6.8 and comprising at least 60 weight percent of a C1 to C4 alcohol;

one or more emollients in an amount of from 1.0 to 8.0 weighty percent of the sanitizer, emulsifiers in an amount of from 0.1 to 3.5 weight percent of the sanitizer, and rheology modifiers in an amount of from 2.5 to 8.0 percent of the sanitizer; and

an anionic phospholipid in an amount of at least 0.1 to 3.0 weight percent of the total formulation.

22. The method of claim 21 where the anionic phospholipid is present in an amount of from 0.25 to 2.5 percent of the formulation.

23. The method of claim 21 where the anionic phospholipid is added as a component of a phospholipid mixture and is present in the mixture in an amount of at least 5 weight percent and the total phospholipid content.

24. The sanitizer of claim 23 where anionic phospholipid component in the mixture of phospholipids varies between 8 and 15 weight percent and the phospholipid mixture is free of cationic phospholipids.

25. The sanitizer of claim 23 where the anionic phospholipid is phosphatidylethanolamine.
