Abstract

An energy management system includes a controller disposed at a site. The controller is in communication with a gateway with the gateway being capable of establishing a broadband connection with a first communication network. The gateway is configured to communicate with at least one remote server for receiving energy management information located at the at least one remote server. The controller is configured to initiate communication with the at least one remote server at a first periodic interval to request receipt of the energy management information over the first communication network.

Claims

1. An energy management system, comprising:

a controller for managing energy at a site;

a gateway in communication with said controller and which is capable of establishing a broadband connection with a first communication network;

the gateway being configured to communicate with at least one remote server for receiving any energy management information located at said at least one remote server;

wherein said controller is configured to initiate communication with said at least one remote server at a first periodic interval to request receipt of said energy management information over said first communication network.

2. The energy management system of claim 1, wherein said controller is configured to communicate with said at least one remote server at a second periodic interval, wherein said first periodic interval is different than said second periodic interval.

3. The energy management system of claim 1, wherein said energy management information includes real time pricing information.

4. The energy management system of claim 1, wherein said energy management information includes a control action.

The energy management system of claim 1, wherein in response to said control action, said controller is configured to alter an operating condition of one or more of a personal computer, a PDA, a consumer electronic device, a media device, a smart phone, a cellular or mobile phone a smart utility meter, an advanced metering infrastructure, a smart energy device, an energy display device, a home automation controller, an energy hub, a smart energy gateway, a set-top box, a digital media subscriber system, a cable modem, a fiber optic enabled communications device, a media gateway, a home media management system, a network server or storage device, an energy substation, a vehicle charging station, a renewable energy production device, a renewable energy control device, an energy storage management system, a smart appliance, an HVAC system, a water pump, a heat pump, a hot water heater, a thermostat, an energy controller, an irrigation system, a lighting system, an alarm system, a smart power outlet, an energy detection device, a power measurement device, a power measurement unit (PMU), an air handler, a wireless air damper, a humidity control system, a refrigerator system, a washing machine system, a heat and motion sensing device, a smart power outlet, a switch router and a wireless router.

6. The energy management system of claim 5, wherein said controller is in communication with said thermostat over a second communication network with said second communication network being different than said first communication network.

7. The energy management system of claim 6, wherein said second communication network operates in a 900 MHz frequency band.

8. The energy management system of claim 1, wherein said controller is capable of communicating with a plurality of remote servers.

9. The energy management system of claim 6, wherein said first communication network uses a first security level and wherein said second communication network uses a second security level and wherein said second security level is different than said first security level.

10. The energy management system of claim 1, wherein said gateway comprises one or more of a set top box, a DSL gateway, a cable system gateway, or a fiber optic gateway.

11. The energy management system of claim 5, wherein said thermostat includes a touch screen.

12. A method of managing energy use at a site, comprising:

providing energy management control at the site;

establishing a broadband connection with at least one remote server via a first communication network;

communicating with at least one remote server at a first periodic interval;

determining whether said at least one remote server has any energy management information for the site;

receiving said energy management information at a controller;

processing said energy management information at the site.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

communicating with said at least one remote server at a second periodic interval;

wherein said first periodic interval is different than said second periodic interval.

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

altering an operating condition of one or more of a personal computer, a PDA, a consumer electronic device, a media device, a smart phone, a cellular or mobile phone a smart utility meter, an advanced metering infrastructure, a smart energy device, an energy display device, a home automation controller, an energy hub, a smart energy gateway, a set-top box, a digital media subscriber system, a cable modem, a fiber optic enabled communications device, a media gateway, a home media management system, a network server or storage device, an energy substation, a vehicle charging station, a renewable energy production device, a renewable energy control device, an energy storage management system, a smart appliance, an HVAC system, a water pump, a heat pump, a hot water heater, a thermostat, an energy controller, an irrigation system, a lighting system, an alarm system, a smart power outlet, an energy detection device, a power measurement device, a power measurement unit (PMU), an air handler, a wireless air damper, a humidity control system, a refrigerator system, a washing machine system, a heat and motion sensing device, a smart power outlet, a switch router and a wireless router.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein said energy management information includes real time pricing information.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein said energy management information includes at least one control action.

17. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

establishing a connection with said thermostat over a second communication network;

wherein said second communication network is different than said first communication network.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein said second communication network operates in a 900 MHz frequency band.

19. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

communicating with a second remote server at a second periodic interval.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein said second periodic interval is different than said first periodic interval.

21. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

assigning a first security level to said first communication network;

assigning a second security level to said second communication network;

wherein said first security level is different than said second security level.

22. A method of managing energy use at a site, comprising:

opening a session with a first remote server;

communicating with said at least one remote server at a periodic interval;

determining whether energy management information is located at said at least one remote server;

receiving said energy management information at a controller located at the site;

processing said energy management information.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising:

communication with a second remote server at a second periodic interval;

wherein said second periodic interval is different than said first periodic interval.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein said energy management information includes real time pricing information.

25. The method of claim 22, wherein said energy management information includes at least one control action.

26. The method of claim 22, further comprising:
