Abstract

An item of information (212) is transmitted to a distal computer (220), translated to a different sense modality and/or language (222), and in substantially real time, and the translation (222) is transmitted back to the location (211) from which the item was sent. The device sending the item is preferably a wireless device, and more preferably a cellular or other telephone (210). The device receiving the translation is also preferably a wireless device, and more preferably a cellular or other telephone, and may advantageously be the same device as the sending device. The item of information (212) preferably comprises a sentence of human of speech having at least ten words, and the translation is a written expression of the sentence. All of the steps of transmitting the item of information, executing the program code, and transmitting the translated information preferably occurs in less than 60 seconds of elapsed time.

Claims

1. A method of using a cell phone to operate a device, comprising:

communicating words to the cell phone;

using the cell phone to apply speech recognition to the words; and

using the cell phone to send information derived from the speech recognition to the device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of communicating comprises speaking to the cell phone.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the device is intermittently local to the cell phone, and the words comprise a command to the device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the words comprise a command to the cell phone.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the words comprise human understandable speech.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of using the cell phone to apply speech recognition to the words comprises using the cell phone to (a) derive a transmissible electronic signal from the words and (b) transmit the signal to a distal service that derives a machine instruction from the signal.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of using the cell phone to apply speech recognition to the words comprises using the cell phone to (a) derive a transmissible electronic signal from the words and (b) transmit the signal to a distal service that uses the signal to translate the words into a machine instruction.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of using the cell phone to send information derived from the speech recognition comprises using the cell phone to cause a distal service to transmit a machine understandable command to the device.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a household appliance.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a television.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the device comprises the cell phone.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the device is intermittently local to the cell phone, and the step of using the cell phone to send information derived from the speech recognition comprises using the cell phone to cause a distal service to transmit a machine understandable command to the device through the cell phone.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising using the cell phone to render the information as text.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising using the cell phone to render the information as an image.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising using the cell phone to render the information as a sound.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising using the cell phone to render the information as human understandable speech.

17. The method of claim 1, further comprising using the cell phone to render the information in a modality other than speech or text.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of communicating comprises speaking to the cell phone, the words comprise a command to the cell phone, and further comprising using the cell phone to render the information as human understandable speech.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of communicating comprises speaking to the cell phone, the words comprise a command to the cell phone, and further comprising using the cell phone to render the information as an image.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of communicating comprises speaking to the cell phone, the words comprise a command to the cell phone, and further comprising using the cell phone to render the information as text.
