Abstract

A method includes displaying, on a display of an electronic device, an information element associated with an application and detecting a first gesture. In response to detecting the first gesture, at least a first part of a first image is displayed, including information associated with the application, while reducing display of the information element.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

displaying, on a display of an electronic device, an information element associated with an application;

detecting a first gesture;

in response to detecting the first gesture, displaying at least a first part of a first image including information associated with the application while reducing display of the information element.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein display of the first part progressively increases in size as the first gesture continues.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein display of the first part progressively decreases in size when the first gesture changes direction.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein display of the first part progressively increases in size or decreases in size along with movement of the first gesture.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the first part discontinues when the first gesture is no longer detected.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying the first image and discontinuing display of the information element when the first gesture meets a threshold.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the information element is a message and the application is one of an inbox and a universal inbox.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

discontinuing displaying the first image and displaying the information element;

displaying a document related to the information element;

detecting a second gesture;

in response to detecting the second gesture, displaying a second part of the first image while reducing display of the document.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising displaying a part of the information element while displaying the second part.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein displaying the second part and the part of the information element discontinues when the second gesture is no longer detected

11. The method of claim 8, wherein display of the second part progressively increases as the second gesture continues.

12. The method of claim 8, wherein display of the second part progressively decreases when the second gesture changes direction.

13. The method of claim 8, wherein display of the second part progressively increases in size or decreases in size along with movement of the second gesture.

14. The method of claim 8, wherein displaying the second part discontinues when the second gesture is no longer detected.

15. The method of claim 8, further comprising displaying the second part and discontinuing display of the document when the second gesture meets a threshold length.

16. The method of claim 8, wherein the first image includes information from a universal inbox, wherein the information element is a message, and the document is an attachment to the message.

17. The method of claim 1, further comprising display of an indication of an order of the application, the information element, and a document to indicate a direction for a gesture to display at least part of the application, at least part of the information element, and at least part of the document.

18. The method of claim 1, further comprising, when the information element comprises unsaved changes, saving the changes in a saved element when the second gesture meets a threshold length.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising displaying an indication of the saved element when displaying the first image.

20. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

displaying the first image and discontinuing display of the information element;

detecting a third gesture;

in response to detecting the third gesture, displaying at least a part of the information element while reducing display of the first image.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein display of the part of the information element progressively increases in size as the third gesture continues.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein display of the part of the information element progressively decreases in size when the third gesture changes direction.

23. The method of claim 20, wherein display of the second part progressively increases in size or decreases in size along with movement of the third gesture.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein any detected gesture is detected by a touch-sensitive input device.

25. The method of claim 1, wherein any detected gesture is a three-dimensional gesture.

26. The method of claim 1, wherein the application is an inbox associated with at least one messaging application.

27. The method of claim 1, wherein the information element is one of an email message, a text message, a social network message, a phone message, and a calendar event message.

28. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having computer-readable code executable by at least one processor of the portable electronic device to perform the method of claim 1.

29. An electronic device configured to perform the method of claim 1.

30. A method comprising:

while displaying an image associated with an application on a display of an electronic device, detecting a gesture associated with an information element of the application;

in response to detecting the gesture, displaying a part of the information element while reducing display of the image associated with the application.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein display of the part of the information element progressively increases in size as the gesture continues.

32. The method of claim 30, wherein display of the part of the information element progressively decreases in size when the gesture changes direction.

33. The method of claim 30, wherein display of the part of the information element progressively increases in size or decreases in size along with movement of the gesture.

34. The method of claim 30, wherein displaying the part of the information element discontinues when the gesture is no longer detected.

35. The method of claim 30, further comprising at least partially displaying the information element and discontinuing displaying the information associated with the application when the gesture meets a threshold length.

36. A method comprising:

displaying a first image on a touch-sensitive display;

detecting a gesture;

in response to detecting the gesture;

displaying a part of a second image;

displaying a first part of the first image adjacent to the part of the second image and discontinuing display of a second part of the first image.

37. The method of claim 36, further comprising displaying progressively more of the second image and displaying progressively less of the first image as the gesture continues to be detected.

38. The method of claim 36, further comprising discontinuing display of the second image when the gesture is no longer detected.

39. The method of claim 36, wherein, in response to detecting that the gesture meets a threshold, displaying the second image and discontinuing display of the first image.

40. The method of claim 36, wherein the part of the second image is displayed adjacent to a first edge of the touch-sensitive display.

41. The method of claim 36, wherein, prior to detecting the gesture, displaying the first part of the first image adjacent to a first edge of the touch-sensitive display, and, in response to detecting the gesture, displaying the part of the second image adjacent to the first edge and displaying the first part of the first image adjacent to the second image.

42. The method of claim 36, wherein the first image includes a second part of the first image is opposite to the first part of the first image.

43. The method of claim 36, wherein, as the gesture continues, an area of display of the part of the second image progressively increases in size.

44. The method of claim 36, wherein, as the gesture continues, an area of display of the first part of the first image progressively decreases in size.

45. The method of claim 36, wherein an area of display of the part of the second image progressively increases in size or decreases in size along with movement of the gesture.

46. The method of claim 36, wherein a quantity of information displayed in the second image progressively increases in size or decreases in size along with movement of the gesture.

47. The method of claim 36, wherein the first image includes an image of an inbox, and the second image includes an image of an email message.

48. The method of claim 36, wherein the first image includes an image of an email message, and the second image includes an image of an inbox.

49. The method of claim 36, wherein the first image includes an image of an attachment to an email message, and the second image includes an image of an inbox.

50. The method of claim 36, wherein the first image includes an image of an email message, and the second image includes an image of attachment to an mail message.

51. The method of claim 36, wherein the first image includes an image of an attachment to an email message, and the second image includes an image of an email message.

52. The method of claim 36, wherein one of the first image and the second image includes an image of an inbox including a plurality of notifications of messages from a plurality of different message applications.

53. The method of claim 36, wherein the second image includes one of an email message, a text message, a social network message, a phone message, and a calendar event message.

54. A method comprising:

while displaying an image on a display of an electronic device, detecting a gesture;

in response to the detecting, displaying at least a part of a first icon while reducing display of the image.

55. The method of claim 54, wherein the first icon is a notification related to an application.

56. The method of claim 54, wherein a plurality of icons are progressively displayed in a row or a column.

57. The method of claim 54, further comprising providing at least one of a visual notice and an audible notice related to the notification prior to the detecting.
