Abstract

Selective data compression by a distributed traffic management system to reduce mobile and/or signaling traffic are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method can include, for example: compressing an uncompressed data chunk in a data stream to be transmitted over the wireless network to generate a compressed data chunk, comparing sizes of the uncompressed data chunk with the compressed data chunk, transmitting an optimized data stream comprising of the uncompressed data chunk or the compressed data chunk over the wireless network, depending on which is smaller in size. In one embedment, a header can be included in the optimized data stream to indicate which of uncompressed data chunk and the compressed data chunk is transmitted.

Claims

1. A method for enhancing resource management in a wireless network through selective data compression to reduce mobile data traffic and signaling traffic, the method, comprising:

compressing an uncompressed data chunk in a data stream to be transmitted over the wireless network to generate a compressed data chunk;

comparing sizes of the uncompressed data chunk with the compressed data chunk;

transmitting an optimized data stream comprising of the uncompressed data chunk or the compressed data chunk over the wireless network, depending on which is smaller in size;

wherein, a header is included in the optimized data stream to indicate which of uncompressed data chunk and the compressed data chunk is transmitted.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein, the data stream is to be transmitted in a distributed traffic management system having a local proxy on a mobile device and a proxy server remote from the mobile device, wherein, the proxy server is able to establish wireless connectivity to the mobile device.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising, updating a compression dictionary if the compressed data chunk is transmitted in the optimized data stream

4. The method of claim 1, wherein, a compression dictionary is not transmitted or updated if the uncompressed data chunk is transmitted in the optimized data stream.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein a compression dictionary is applied when the compressed data chunk is transmitted to decode the compressed data chunk.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein, the compression dictionary is updated when the compressed data chunk is sent to maintain synchronization across compressed data chunks and uncompressed data chunks sent between the proxy server and the mobile device.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein, the header is used such that the compression dictionary need not be sent with each data chunk in the optimized data stream.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein, the data stream runs above a transport layer and below a session layer.

9. The method of claim 2, wherein, the data stream is sent from the proxy server to the local proxy of the mobile device;

wherein, the compression is performed by the proxy server.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein, the data stream includes cache-related content or information.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein, the data stream includes content or data from a content source or application server directed to the mobile device.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein, the proxy server monitors the content server for new or changed data;

wherein, the data stream includes a cache invalidate message.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein, the data stream includes state information of content cached on the proxy server or on the local proxy.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein, the data stream includes cached content from a content source or application server directed to the mobile device.

15. The method of claim 2, wherein, the data stream is sent from the local proxy of the mobile device to the proxy server;

wherein, the compression is performed by the local proxy.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein, the data stream includes cache-setup information including a polling schedule of one or more content sources or application servers.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein, the data stream includes mobile data traffic or signaling data.

18. A system for optimizing resources in a mobile network, the system, comprising:

a local proxy on a mobile device, which stores content from a host server as cached elements in a local cache;

wherein, the local proxy retrieves the cached elements from the local cache to provide a response to a mobile application such that a radio of the mobile device is not activated to provide the response to the mobile application;

a proxy server coupled to the mobile device and the host server with which the mobile application interacts;

wherein, the proxy server monitors the content server for new or changed data, and notifies the local proxy regarding state and validity some or all of the cached elements in communications transmitted in an at least partially compressed data stream.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein, the at least partially compressed data stream is generated by the proxy server by transmitting a smaller of a compressed version or uncompressed version of a given data chunk in a data stream.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein, the proxy server includes a header to indicate which of the compressed version or the uncompressed version of each data chunk is transmitted and updates a compression dictionary for each data chuck where the compressed version is transmitted.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein, the local proxy uses the compression dictionary to decode the at least partially compressed data stream and the header to identify portions of the at least partially compressed data stream to which to apply the compression dictionary.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein, the local proxy identifies to the proxy server, that content received from the host server is being stored as cached elements in the local cache.

23. The system of claim 18, wherein:

wherein, the local proxy intercepts a polling request, made by a mobile application on the mobile device, to contact the host server for which received content is stored as cached elements,

the local proxy invalidates the cache elements in the local cache when new or changed data is detected at the content server;

wherein, the proxy server monitors the content server for new or changed data, and notifies the local proxy to invalidate some or all of the cached elements.

24. A method of enhancing resource management in a wireless network through data compression to reduce mobile data traffic and signaling traffic, the method, comprising:

transmitting an uncompressed version or a compressed version of a data chunk in a data stream over the wireless network, depending on which is smaller in size;

including a header to indicate which of uncompressed data chunk or the compressed data chunk is transmitted;

updating a compression dictionary if the compressed data chunk is transmitted;

wherein, the data stream is to be transmitted between a mobile device and a proxy server remote from the mobile device,

wherein, the proxy server is able to establish wireless connectivity to the mobile device.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein, the mobile device receives the data stream and uses the header to identify portions of the data stream to which to apply the compression dictionary for decoding.
