Iridium (III) complexes are described together with methods to prepare and use such complexes. Also described are devices that utilize the iridium (III) complexes.

1. A multidentate iridium (III) complex represented by one or more of the following formulas:

2. The complex of claim 1, comprising a tetradentate iridium (III) complex represented by the formula:

3. The tetradentate iridium (III) complex of claim 2, wherein each C is phenyl.

4. The tetradentate iridium (III) complex of claim 2, wherein each N is pyridine or imidazole.

5. The tetradentate iridium (III) complex of claim 2, wherein two E are present and are oxygen.

6. The complex of claim 1, comprising a hexadentate iridium (III) complex represented by the formula:

7. The hexadentate iridium (III) complex of claim 6, wherein each C is phenyl.

8. The hexadentate iridium (III) complex of claim 6, wherein each N is pyridine, pyrrole, pyrazole or imidazole.

9. The hexadentate iridium (III) complex of claim 6, wherein two E are present and are oxygen.

10. The complex of claim 1, comprising a hexadentate iridium (III) complex represented by the formula:

21. An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) comprising one or more of the iridium (III) complexes of claim 1.

22. An organic photovoltaic device comprising, as a donor or acceptor material, one or more of the iridium (III) complexes of claim 1.

23. A luminescent bio-marker comprising one or more of the iridium (III) complexes of claim 1.

18. A hexadentate iridium (III) complex represented by the formula:
