Abstract

Golf clubs according to at least some example aspects of this disclosure may include a golf club head and a shaft configured to engage with the golf club head which includes a grip engaged with the shaft. Further, the golf club may include a monitoring device, which includes a sensor and a transmitter. Additionally, the monitoring device may be configured to determine data related to the characteristics of a golf swing. Further, the monitoring device may be configured to transmit the data related to the characteristics of a golf swing to a remote computer.

Claims

1. A golf club, comprising:

a golf club head;

a shaft configured to engage with the golf club head, including a grip engaged with the shaft; and

wherein the golf club is configured to receive a monitoring device, comprising;

at least one sensor configured to determine data related to the characteristics of a golf swing;

a transmitter configured to transmit the data related to the characteristics of a golf swing to a remote computer; and

a compartment configured to secure the sensor and the transmitter.

2. The golf club of claim 1, wherein the shaft is configured to receive and secure the monitoring device at the grip of the shaft.

3. The golf club of claim 2, wherein the shaft is configured to receive the compartment of the monitoring device when the compartment is oriented such that a longitudinal axis of monitoring device and a longitudinal axis of the shaft extend in substantially the same direction.

4. The golf club of claim 3, further comprising a recess in the grip which is configured to secure the monitoring device, wherein the recess includes an opening at a top of the grip.

5. The golf club of claim 4, wherein the recess is configured to secure the monitoring device by directly engaging the exterior of the compartment and holding the compartment via a friction fit.

6. The golf club of claim 4, wherein the recess is configured to secure the compartment and the compartment is rectangular with rounded ends and has a length in the range of 1.0-1.5 inches, a width of 0.4-1.0 inches and thickness of 0.2-0.45 inches.

7. The golf club of claim 3, further comprising:

a removable section configured to house the compartment of the monitoring device, wherein the shaft is configured to receive a removable section at a terminal end of the shaft.

8. The golf club of claim 7, wherein the removable section includes:

a circular portion which is configured to form the top of the shaft when the removable section is engaged with the shaft; and

an elongated portion which extends from the circular portion and is configured to house the monitoring device.

9. The golf club of claim 8, wherein the elongated portion of the removable section is configured to secure the monitoring device by directly engaging the exterior of the compartment and holding the compartment with at least one of:

press fitting, snap fit mechanisms or mechanical fasteners.

10. The golf club of claim 9, wherein the elongate portion includes a first arched end configured to engage a first rounded end of the compartment, a second arched end configured to engage a second rounded end of the compartment, wherein the second arched end is opposite the first arched end.

11. The golf club of claim 10, wherein the elongate portion includes a back portion which extends between the first arched portion and the second arched portion and is configured to engage a side of the compartment

12. The golf club of claim 11, wherein the elongate portion is configured to secure the compartment which is rectangular with the first and second rounded end and has a length in the range of 1.0-1.5 inches, a width of 0.4-1.0 inches and thickness of 0.2-0.45 inches.

13. The golf club of claim 12, wherein the circular portion of the removable section includes an orifice configured to receive a threaded fastener and configured to align with a second orifice in the grip configured to receive the threaded fastener.

14. The golf club of claim 3, wherein the removable section engages with the shaft with at least one of:

press fitting, snap fit mechanisms or mechanical fasteners.

15. The golf club of claim 1, wherein the golf club head is configured to receive and secure the monitoring device.

16. The golf club of claim 15, wherein the monitoring device is exposed when the monitoring device is engaged with the golf club head.

17. The golf club of claim 15, wherein the golf club head is a wood-type golf club head.

18. The golf club of claim 17, wherein a sole of the golf club head includes a recess configured to receive the compartment of the monitoring device.

19. The golf club of claim 18, wherein the recess is configured to retain the monitoring device in an orientation wherein a longitudinal axis of the compartment of the monitoring device is arranged in ball striking face to rear direction.

20. The golf club of claim 19, wherein the recess is configured to secure the monitoring device by directly engaging the exterior of the compartment and holding the compartment via a friction fit.

21. The golf club of claim 20, wherein the recess is configured to secure the compartment and the compartment is rectangular with rounded ends and has a length in the range of 1.0-1.5 inches, a width of 0.4-1.0 inches and thickness of 0.2-0.45 inches.

22. The golf club of claim 19, further comprising:

a removable section configured to engage with a sole of the wood-type golf club head and, also, configured to secure the compartment of the monitoring device in the golf club head when the removable section is engaged with the golf club head.

23. The golf club of claim 21, wherein removable section includes an opening which exposes the compartment of the monitoring device.

24. The golf club of claim 18, wherein the recess is positioned at a rear portion of the sole of the golf club head and is configured to retain the monitoring device in an orientation wherein a longitudinal axis of the compartment of the monitoring device is arranged in heel to toe direction.

25. The golf club of claim 15, wherein the golf club head is an iron-type golf club head.

26. The golf club of claim 25, wherein a rear portion of the iron-type golf club head includes a recess configured to receive the compartment of the monitoring device.

27. The golf club of claim 26, wherein the recess is configured to retain the monitoring device in an orientation wherein a longitudinal axis of the compartment of the monitoring device is arranged in a heel to toe direction.

28. The golf club of claim 27, wherein the recess is configured to secure the monitoring device by directly engaging the exterior of the compartment and holding the compartment via a friction fit.

29. The golf club of claim 28, wherein the recess is configured to secure the compartment and the compartment is rectangular with rounded ends and has a length in the range of 1.0-1.5 inches, a width of 0.4-1.0 inches and thickness of 0.2-0.45 inches.

30. The golf club of claim 28, further comprising:

a removable section configured to engage with the rear portion of the iron-type golf club head and, also, configured to secure the compartment of the monitoring device in the golf club head when the removable section is engaged with the golf club head.

31. The golf club of claim 30, wherein removable section includes an opening which exposes the compartment of the monitoring device.

32. The golf club of claim 15, wherein the golf club head is a putter-type golf club head.

33. The golf club of claim 32, wherein a rear portion of the putter-type golf club head includes a recess configured to receive the compartment of the monitoring device.

34. The golf club of claim 33, wherein the recess is configured to retain the monitoring device in an orientation wherein a longitudinal axis of the compartment of the monitoring device is arranged in a heel to toe direction.

35. The golf club of claim 33, wherein the recess is configured to secure the monitoring device by directly engaging the exterior of the compartment and holding the compartment via a friction fit.

36. The golf club of claim 35, wherein the recess is configured to secure the compartment and the compartment is rectangular with rounded ends and has a length in the range of 1.0-1.5 inches, a width of 0.4-1.0 inches and thickness of 0.2-0.45 inches.

37. The golf club of claim 35, wherein the recess is centered relative to the heel toe direction of the putter-type golf club head.

38. The golf club of claim 32, wherein the putter-type golf club head includes a recess configured to receive the compartment of the monitoring device and the recess is positioned directly behind a ball striking face of the putter-type golf club head.

39. The golf club of claim 32, wherein a rear portion of the putter-type golf club head includes a first recess configured to receive the compartment of the monitoring device and a second recess configured to receive a second compartment of a second monitoring device.

40. The golf club of claim 39, wherein the first recess is positioned in a heel end of the putter-type golf club head and the second recess is positioned in a toe end of the putter-type golf club head.

41. A golf club, comprising:

a golf club head;

a shaft configured to engage with the golf club head, including a grip engaged with the shaft; and

wherein the golf club is configured to receive at least two monitoring devices, each comprising;

at least one sensor configured to determine data related to the characteristics of a golf swing;

a transmitter configured to transmit the data related to the characteristics of a golf swing to a remote computer; and

a compartment configured to secure the sensor and the transmitter,

wherein the shaft is configured to receive and secure a first monitoring device at the grip of the shaft,

wherein the golf club head is configured to receive and secure a second monitoring device.

42. The golf club of claim 41, wherein the shaft is configured to receive the compartment of the monitoring device when the compartment is oriented such that a longitudinal axis of monitoring device and a longitudinal axis of the shaft extend in substantially the same direction.

43. The golf club of claim 42, wherein the golf club head includes a recess configured to receive the compartment of the monitoring device.

44. The golf club of claim 43, wherein the recess is configured to secure the monitoring device by directly engaging the exterior of the compartment and holding the compartment via a friction fit.

45. The golf club of claim 44, wherein the golf club head is a wood-type golf club head.

46. The golf club of claim 45, wherein a sole of the golf club head includes the recess configured to receive the compartment of the monitoring device.

47. The golf club of claim 44, wherein the golf club head is an iron-type golf club head.

48. The golf club of claim 44, wherein the golf club head is putter-type golf club head.
