Abstract

A system and method of sending an e-mail message associated with a wireless device is provided. A request to forward or reply to an original e-mail message is sent from the wireless device to a server. The request contains one or more recipients and includes a message identifier of an original e-mail message. A portion indicator is provided for retrieving portions of the original e-mail message identified by the message identifier. An e-mail message is sent to the one or more recipients comprising any added user text and the one or more retrieved portions of the original e-mail message such that text of the original message that the user may not be aware is not forwarded to new recipients.

Claims

1. A method of sending an e-mail message from a wireless device, the method comprising:

receiving a request at a server to forward the e-mail message to one or more recipients and a message identifier of an original e-mail message, the e-mail message having been received at the wireless device in one or more portions;

determining a portion indicator for the e-mail message associated with the request;

retrieving one or more portions of the original e-mail message determined by the portion indicator, of the original e-mail message identified by the message identifier; and

sending a forwarded e-mail message comprising the one or more retrieved portions of the original e-mail message from the server to the one or more recipients.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the portion indicator is determined by the server, wherein the portion indicator is defined by the portions sent from the server to the wireless device prior to receiving the request to forward or reply to the e-mail.

The method of claim 1 wherein the portion indicator identifies the amount of text of the e-mail message that was displayed on the wireless device relative to text received by the wireless device prior to the request to forward the e-mail message being received at the server, wherein only text displayed on the wireless device is sent.

The method of claim 1 wherein the portion indicator is provided by the wireless device and identifies the amount of text of the original e-mail message that was displayed on the wireless devices relative to the amount of text received by the wireless device prior to the request to forward or reply to the e-mail message being received at the server.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the request further comprises appending text to be added to the sent e-mail message provided in the forwarding request.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the forward request is based upon a reply to a message where the one or more recipients are recipients not associated with the original message.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprises appending text to the portion of the e-mail message that is sent to the one or more recipients to identify that the e-mail message was truncated.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the pointer identifies a message identifier that uniquely identifies an encrypted e-mail message.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the encrypted e-mail message is a Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME) format message.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the wireless devices provide a decryption key to the wireless server to decrypt the message.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the server retrieves a decryption key from a public key infrastructure (PKI) server.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising retrieving the e-mail message from an e-mail server coupled to the server is a wireless server.

13. A device for sending an e-mail message from a wireless device, the device comprising:

a network interface;

a processor; and

a memory coupled to the processor containing instructions which when executed by the processor perform;

receiving a request via the network interface to forward the e-mail message to one or more recipients and a message identifier of an original e-mail message, the e-mail message having been received at the wireless device in one or more portions;

determining a portion indicator for the e-mail message associated with the request;

retrieving one or more portions of the original e-mail message determined by the portion indicator, of the original e-mail message identified by the message identifier; and

sending a forwarded e-mail message via the network interface comprising the one or more retrieved portions of the original e-mail message from the server to the one or more recipients.

14. The device of claim 13 wherein the portion indicator is determined by the server, wherein the portion indicator is defined by the portions sent from the server to the wireless device prior to receiving the request to forward or reply to the e-mail.

The device of claim 13 wherein the portion indicator identifies the amount of text of the e-mail message that was displayed on the wireless device relative to text received by the wireless device prior to the request to forward the e-mail message being received at the server, wherein only text displayed on the wireless device is sent.

16. The device of claim 13 wherein the portion indicator is provided by the wireless device and identifies the amount of text of the original e-mail message that was displayed on the wireless devices relative to the amount of text received by the wireless device prior to the request to forward or reply to the e-mail message being received at the server.

17. The device of claim 13 further comprises appending text to the portion of e-mail message that is sent to the one or more recipients to identify that the e-mail message was truncated.

18. The device of claim 13 further comprising retrieving the e-mail message from an e-mail server coupled to the server wherein the server is a wireless server.

19. The device of claim 13 wherein the pointer identifies a message identifier that uniquely identifies an encrypted e-mail message.

20. The device of claim 19 wherein the e-mail message is a Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME) format message.

21. The method of claim 20 wherein the wireless devices provide a decryption key to the wireless server to decrypt the message.

22. The method of claim 20 wherein the server retrieves a decryption key from a public key infrastructure (PKI) server.

23. The device of claim 13 wherein the forward request is based upon a reply to a message where the one or more recipients are recipients not associated with the original message.

24. The device of claim 13 wherein the request further comprises appending text to be added to the sent e-mail message provided in the forwarding request.

25. A non-transitory computer readable medium containing instructions which when executed by a processor perform:

receiving a request at a server to forward the e-mail message to one or more recipients and a message identifier of an original e-mail message, the e-mail message having been received at the wireless device in one or more portions;

determining a portion indicator for the e-mail message associated with the request;

retrieving one or more portions of the original e-mail message determined by the portion indicator, of the original e-mail message identified by the message identifier; and

sending a forwarded e-mail message comprising the one or more retrieved portions of the original e-mail message from the server to the one or more recipients.
