Abstract

A method and apparatus for dynamic network link acceleration provides a managed communication link for accelerated and reliable network communication between a client and other network devices. In one or more embodiments, a client computing device which generates communication packets of a first type is enhanced with a front end mechanism which selectively encodes the data packets into packets of a second type. The data packets which are encoded into a second type are transmitted over a managed communication link which may provide error correction, security, quality of service, and other services including acceleration of communications.

Claims

1. A client communication device capable of wireless communications comprising:

one or more processors;

one or more storage devices;

at least one electronic display configured to present information to a user of said device;

a wireless communication interface;

said client communication device having a base configuration in which said client communication device is configured to generate one or more data packets of a first type for transmission via said wireless communication interface; and

a front-end mechanism stored on the one or more storage devices and executable by the one or more processors to selectively encode data from the one or more data packets of said first type into one or more encoded packets of an enhanced type and provide a managed communication link for data traffic comprising said packets of said enhanced type between the wireless communication interface and a back-end mechanism remote from said client communication device.

2. The client communication device of claim 1, wherein the front-end mechanism is configured to delete itself from the one or more storage devices when the managed communication link is no longer in use.

3. The client communication device of claim 1, wherein said client communication device comprises a PDA.

4. The client communication device of claim 1, wherein said client communication device comprises a cellular communication device.

5. The client communication device of claim 1, wherein said client communication device further comprises at least one user input device configured to receive input from a user of said client communication device.

6. The client communication device of claim 1, wherein said back-end mechanism is associated with a second client communication device.

7. The client communication device of claim 6 wherein said second client communication device comprises a wireless communication interface and said managed communication link comprises a wireless communication link.

8. The client communication device of claim 1, wherein said managed communication link comprises a wireless communication link.

9. The client communication device of claim 1, wherein said front-end mechanism is configured to selectively encode said data packets of said first type into data packets of said enhanced type in response to input to said client communication device by a user thereof.

10. A system for dynamic network link acceleration comprising:

at least one client communication device capable of wireless communications comprising;

one or more processors;

one or more storage devices;

at least one electronic display configured to present information to a user of said device;

a wireless communication interface;

said client communication device having a base configuration in which said client communication device is configured to generate one or more data packets of a first type for transmission via said wireless communication interface; and

a front-end mechanism stored on the one or more storage devices and executable by the one or more processors to selectively encode data from the one or more data packets of said first type into one or more encoded packets of an enhanced type and provide a managed communication link for data traffic comprising said packets of said enhanced type;

at least one back-end having at least one communication interface, said at least one back-end in communication with at least one second device;

one or more managed communication links between the front-end mechanism of the at least one client communication device and the at least one second device via said at least one back-end, wherein the traffic over said managed communication link comprises said encoded packets of said enhanced type and communications with said client communication device which are not over said managed communication link comprise said one or more packets of said first type.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the front-end mechanism is machine readable code downloaded from a remote source to the at least one client communication device.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein said at least one client communication device comprises a mobile communication or computing device.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein said mobile communication or computing device comprises a PDA or a cellular communication device.

14. The system of claim 10, wherein said at least one second device comprises a wireless communication device.

15. The system of claim 10, wherein said at least one second device comprises a server.

16. The system of claim 10, wherein said at least one back-end has a wireless communication interface.

17. The system of claim 10, wherein at least a portion of said managed communication link comprises a wireless communication link.

18. The system of claim 10, wherein said data packets of said first type are transmitted via said wireless interface of said at least one client communication device over a wireless communication link other than said managed communication link.
