Abstract

A portable device that has first and second image sensors and a central processor. The central processor has four processing units and a first image sensor interface and a second image sensor interface for receiving data from the from the first and second image sensors respectively. The four processing units and the first and second sensor interfaces are integrated onto a single chip such that the four processing units are configured to simultaneously process the data from the first and second image interfaces to generate stereoscopic image data.

Claims

1. A portable device comprising:

first and second image sensors; and

,

a central processor having four processing units and a first image sensor interface and a second image sensor interface for receiving data from the from the first and second image sensors respectively, the four processing units and the first and second sensor interfaces being integrated onto a single chip;

wherein,

the four processing units are configured to simultaneously process the data from the first and second image interfaces to generate stereoscopic image data.

2. The portable device according to claim 1 further comprising a scanner for scanning encoded data printed on a substrate in a machine readable form.

3. The portable device according to claim 2 wherein the central processor further comprises a crossbar switch for interconnecting each of the four processing units.

The portable device according to claim 3 wherein the central processor further comprises an input FIFO (first in, first out) and an output FIFO, the input FIFO being configured for receiving data from the image sensor interface and inputting the data to the four processing units, and the output FIFO being configured for receiving processed data to be read by other components.

The portable device according to claim 4 wherein the central processor further comprises a central processing unit and a data bus connecting the central processing unit to the input FIFO and the output FIFO, the central processing unit providing a processing core to operatively control the four processing units.

6. The portable device according to claim 5 wherein the central processor further comprises a data cache to store the processed data until required by the central processing unit.

7. The portable device according to claim 6 further comprising an inkjet printhead wherein the data is input image data from the first and second image sensors and the four processing units perform one or more processing tasks selected from:

rotating the input image data for printing by the printhead;

colour converting the input image data for printing by the printhead; and

,

dithering the input image data for printing by the printhead.

8. The portable device according to claim 7 wherein the scanner interface is connected to the input FIFO and the four processing units operate in accordance with image processing instructions in the encoded data scanned by the scanner.

The portable device according to claim 8 further comprising a color display for viewing an image captured by the CMOS image sensor, wherein the central processor has a display interface connected to the data cache for reading the processed data and transmitting the processed data to the color display.

10. The portable device according to claim 7 wherein each of the processing units have at least one address generator for the processed data sent to the data cache.

11. The portable device according to claim 10 wherein the four processing units has RAM (random access memory) for microcode written by the central processor unit to operatively control that processing unit.

12. The portable device according to claim 11 wherein the central processor has a keyboard interface for user input of instructions to the central processor unit such that the central processor rewrites the microcode in the RAM within each of the processing units.

The portable device according to claim 8 further comprising a print media roll holding a roll of media substrate on which the printhead prints, the print media roll being removable and replaceable, wherein the central processor has an authentication chip interface for interrogating an authentication chip in the media roll for authentication information.

14. The portable device according to claim 1 further comprising a USB port for communication with an external device, wherein the central processor further comprises a USB interface.

15. The portable device according to claim 1 further comprising a 3 Volt battery.
