Abstract

Some embodiments of a portable infusion pump system can be configured to deliver medicine (e.g., insulin or the like) to a user and to deliver media content to a user. The media content can include, for example, MP3 music and other audio/video data stored in a memory device in the portable system. Thus, in particular embodiments, the portable infusion pump system can serve a dual purpose of providing medication and entertainment for the user from a compact and unobtrusive device.

2. A medical infusion pump system, comprising:

a portable housing defining an interior space to receive a medicine;

a pump drive system positioned in the portable housing and configured to dispense medicine to a user from the portable housing when the medicine is received in the space; and

control circuitry electrically connected to a component of the pump drive system positioned in the portable pump housing so as to electrically transmit activation signals for the pump drive system, the control circuitry being electrically connected to a user interface comprising at least a display device and an audio output device, the control circuitry comprising a memory device that stores digital music content for playback through the audio output device, said user interface and said memory device being mechanically coupled with the portable housing that houses the pump drive system and the interior space for the medicine,

wherein a pump parameter related to dispensation of the medicine from the portable housing is adjustable in response to user input at the user interface, and wherein the digital music content stored in the memory device is user-selectable for transfer from a separate computer system via a data communication link between the control circuitry and the separate computer system.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the pump parameter comprises a medicine dispensation rate content stored in the memory device of the portable infusion pump system.

4. The system of claim 2, wherein the data communication link between the control circuitry and the separate computer system comprises a data cable connection.

The system of claim 2, wherein when the data communication link between the control circuitry and the separate computer system is established, one or more digital music files stored at the separate computer system are selectable by the user for uploading to the memory device of the medical infusion pump system.

6. The system of claim 2, wherein one or more buttons of the user interface are configured to cause the digital music content stored in the memory device to be played back or stopped.

The system of claim 2, wherein the audio output device comprises and external audio device, and wherein the control circuitry is configured to output an audible alert through the external audio device, the audible alert being indicative of a detected alarm condition of the portable infusion pump system.

The system of claim 7, wherein the playback of the digital music content is stopped when the audible alert is provided through the external audio device, and wherein the digital music content output through the external audio device is restarted in response to user input on the user interface indicating that the detected alarm condition is acknowledged or resolved.

9. The system of claim 7, wherein the control circuitry interrupts the digital music content to output the audible alert through the external audio device to the user.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the audible alert output through the external audio device comprises a verbal message indicative of the medicine dispensation alarm condition.

11. The system of claim 2, wherein the user interface of the portable infusion pump system contemporaneously displays medicinal delivery information and media content playback information on a display screen of the user interface.

12. The system of claim 2, wherein the audio output device comprises earbuds or headphones.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the audio output device comprises the earbuds or the headphones coupled by an audio cable to an audio output connector that interfaces with the control circuitry.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein the audio output device comprises the earbuds or the headphones that are configured to wirelessly link to a wireless audio transmitter that interfaces with the control circuitry.

15. A method of using a medical infusion pump system, comprising:

establishing a data communication link between a portable infusion pump system and a separate computer system that stores a plurality of digital music files, the portable infusion pump system comprising;

a portable pump housing defining an interior space to receive a medicine, a user interface comprising at least a display device and an audio output device, control circuitry electrically connected to a pump drive system positioned in the portable pump housing so as to electrically transmit activation signals for the pump drive system, the control circuitry being electrically connected to the user interface, the control circuitry comprising a memory device that stores digital music content for playback through the audio output device, the user interface and the memory device being mechanically coupled with the portable housing that houses the pump drive system and the interior space for the medicine

transferring one or more of the digital music files from the separate computer system to the memory device of the portable infusion pump system, the one or more digital music files being stored in the memory device for playback through the audio output device of the portable infusion pump system;

providing user input to the user interface of the portable infusion pump system so as to adjust pump parameter related to dispensation of the medicine from the portable housing; and

providing user input to the user interface of the portable infusion pump system so as to cause the one or more digital music files stored in the memory device to be played back or stopped.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the pump parameter is indicative of a medicine dispensation rate from the portable infusion pump system.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising responding to an audible alert that is indicative of a detected alarm condition of the portable infusion pump system, said responding including providing user input to the user interface so as to acknowledge or resolve the detected alarm condition.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the playback of the digital music file is automatically interrupted when the audible alert is output from the portable infusion pump system.
