Abstract

A method, system, and computer program product for updating an auction monitor display with highlighting or emphasis in the form of graphic data change indicators. The method commences by capturing a first set of auction variables, the auction variables pertaining to an ecommerce auction involving a plurality of auction participants in the ecommerce auction. Then, for ongoing real-time display, the method introduces a delay of a variable duration of time, the variable duration of time based on the length of time before the end of the auction. At various points within each delay period, the method captures a second set of auction variables which are compared to the first set of auction variables to identify a candidate set of changed auction variables for emphasis. The determination of the manner of emphasis is based on the changed auction variable and characteristics of the type of change of the changed auction variable.

Claims

1. A computer implemented method for updating an auction monitor display with graphic data change indicators, the method comprising:

capturing a first set of auction variables, the auction variables pertaining to an ecommerce auction involving at least two sellers participating in the ecommerce auction via a distributed computer network;

delaying a variable duration of time, the variable duration of time based on the length of time before the end of the auction;

capturing a second set of auction variables, the second set of auction variables comprising at least one changed auction variable;

comparing the second set of auction variables to the first set of auction variables to identify a candidate set of changed auction variables;

determining the manner of emphasis of at least one said graphic data change indicator, the determination based on the changed auction variable, and at least one characteristic of change of the changed auction variable; and

displaying, using the auction monitor display the second set of auction variables and at least one said graphic data change indicator.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first set of auction variables comprises at least one dependent variable.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the variable duration of time is determined within the time interval between capturing the first set of auction variables and capturing the second set of auction variables.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein comparing the second set of auction variables to the first set of auction variables comprises calculating a statistical measure.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising comparing the second set of auction variables to the first set of auction variables comprises identifying statistically small changes to remove from candidate set of changed auction variables.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the manner of emphasis of said graphic data change indicator includes determination based on the magnitude of change of the changed auction variable.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the manner of emphasis of said graphic data change indicator includes determination based on a moving average of the changed auction variable.

8. A computer system for updating an auction monitor display with graphic data change indicators, the computer system comprising:

a computer processor; and

a memory to hold program instructions, the program instructions to perform,

capturing a first set of auction variables, the auction variables pertaining to an ecommerce auction involving at least two sellers participating in the ecommerce auction via a distributed computer network;

delaying a variable duration of time, the variable duration of time based on the length of time before the end of the auction;

capturing a second set of auction variables, the second set of auction variables comprising at least one changed auction variable;

comparing the second set of auction variables to the first set of auction variables to identify a candidate set of changed auction variables;

determining the manner of emphasis of at least one said graphic data change indicator, the determination based on the changed auction variable, and at least one characteristic of change of the changed auction variable; and

displaying, using the auction monitor display the second set of auction variables and at least one said graphic data change indicator.

9. The computer system of claim 8, wherein the first set of auction variables comprises at least one dependent variable.

10. The computer system of claim 8, wherein the variable duration of time is determined within the time interval between capturing the first set of auction variables and capturing the second set of auction variables.

11. The computer system of claim 8, wherein comparing the second set of auction variables to the first set of auction variables comprises calculating a statistical measure.

12. The computer system of claim 11, further comprising comparing the second set of auction variables to the first set of auction variables comprises identifying statistically small changes to remove from candidate set of changed auction variables.

13. The computer system of claim 8, wherein determining the manner of emphasis of said graphic data change indicator includes determination based on the magnitude of change of the changed auction variable.

14. The computer system of claim 8, wherein determining the manner of emphasis of said graphic data change indicator includes determination based on a moving average of the changed auction variable.

15. A computer program product embodied in a non-transitory computer readable medium, the computer readable medium having stored thereon a sequence of instructions which, when executed by a processor causes the processor to execute a method for updating an auction monitor display with graphic data change indicators, the method comprising:

capturing a first set of auction variables, the auction variables pertaining to an ecommerce auction involving at least two sellers participating in the ecommerce auction via a distributed computer network;

delaying a variable duration of time, the variable duration of time based on the length of time before the end of the auction;

capturing a second set of auction variables, the second set of auction variables comprising at least one changed auction variable;

comparing the second set of auction variables to the first set of auction variables to identify a candidate set of changed auction variables;

determining the manner of emphasis of at least one said graphic data change indicator, the determination based on the changed auction variable, and at least one characteristic of change of the changed auction variable; and

displaying, using the auction monitor display the second set of auction variables and at least one said graphic data change indicator.

16. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the first set of auction variables comprises at least one dependent variable.

17. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the variable duration of time is determined within the time interval between capturing the first set of auction variables and capturing the second set of auction variables.

18. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein comparing the second set of auction variables to the first set of auction variables comprises calculating a statistical measure.

19. The computer program product of claim 18, further comprising comparing the second set of auction variables to the first set of auction variables comprises identifying statistically small changes to remove from candidate set of changed auction variables.

20. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein determining the manner of emphasis of said graphic data change indicator includes determination based on the magnitude of change of the changed auction variable.
