Abstract

A user interface element is displayed for in place editing of values within a document. For example, in response to selecting a value, a user interface is displayed near the value that receives a slide gesture for adjusting the value in place. The user interface may be configured to select one of the discrete parts of the value in response to changing a level of the slide gesture. For example, a user may move the swipe gesture from a level used for adjusting the day value to the level representing the year value. The user interface displayed and method(s) used to adjust the value may be based on the type of value and the structure and content of the document.

Claims

1. A method for receiving input to adjust a value, comprising:

displaying a value within a graphical display;

determining when a value is selected;

in response to determining to edit the value displaying a user interface element near the value that displays an indicator that is used with a swipe gesture for adjusting the value to a new value that is determined from discrete values;

receiving a swipe gesture to adjust the value;

while receiving the swipe gesture, adjusting the display of the user interface element and the display of the value in place in response to the swipe gesture; and

setting the value to the adjusted value.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the user interface element comprises displaying a line that appears to a left of a display of the value and to a right of the display of the value.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein in response to the swipe gesture, the value appears to slide along the line.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the user interface element comprises displaying potential values above a display of the value.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein displaying potential values above a display of the value comprises displaying potential values for each part of a value that may be set at different levels.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the swipe gesture comprises determining a level of the swipe and adjusting the part of the value that corresponds to the level of the swipe.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the potential values comprises displaying the potential values as an alpha blend such that a portion of the display remains visible that is located beneath the display of the potential values.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting the display of the user interface element and the display of the value in place in response to the swipe gesture comprises determining a distance from the value to a current swipe position and adjusting a speed of the change of the value in response to the position increasing.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining a type of category that is associated with the value and adjusting the value based on the determined type of category.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the swipe gesture to adjust the value comprises receiving a touch gesture that comprises detecting a finger sliding along the display near the display of the value.

11. A computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions for in place editing of values, comprising:

displaying a value within a graphical display;

determining when a value is selected;

in response to determine the value is selected, graphically indicating the selection of the value, displaying a user interface element near the value that displays potential values near the selected value and is configured to receive a swipe gesture for adjusting the value to a new value that is determined from discrete values;

receiving touch input that is a swipe gesture to adjust the value;

while receiving the swipe gesture, adjusting the display of the user interface element and the display of the value in place in response to the swipe gesture; and

setting the value to the adjusted value.

12. The computer-readable medium of claim 11, wherein displaying the potential values comprises displaying potential values for each part of a value at different positions on the display of the user interface element.

13. The computer-readable medium of claim 12, wherein receiving the swipe gesture comprises determining a level of the swipe gesture and adjusting the part of the value that corresponds to the level of the swipe.

14. The computer-readable medium of claim 12, wherein displaying the potential values comprises displaying the potential values as an alpha blend such that a portion of the display remains visible that is located beneath the display of the potential values.

15. The computer-readable medium of claim 11, wherein adjusting the display of the user interface element and the display of the value in place in response to the swipe gesture comprises determining a distance from the value to a current swipe position and adjusting a speed of the change of the value in response to the position increasing.

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 11, further comprising determining a type of category that is associated with the value by examining a cell and at least one surrounding cell near the selected value.

17. An apparatus for in place editing of values, comprising:

a display that is configured to receive touch input;

a processor and memory;

an operating environment executing using the processor;

an application that includes values that may be changed; and

a user interface manager operating in conjunction with the application that is configured to perform actions comprising;

displaying a value on the display;

determining when a value on the display is selected;

in response to determine the value is selected, graphically indicating the selection of the value, displaying a user interface element near the value that displays a level of potential values for each discrete part of the value and that is configured to receive touch input for adjusting the value to a new value that is determined from discrete values;

receiving touch input to adjust the value;

while receiving the swipe gesture, adjusting the display of the user interface element to show a currently selected potential value; and

setting the value to the adjusted value.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein displaying the user interface element comprises displaying the user interface element as an alpha blend such that a portion of the display remains visible that is located beneath the display of the user interface element.

The apparatus of claim 17, wherein adjusting the display of the user interface element and the display of the value in place in response to the swipe gesture comprises determining a distance from the value to a current swipe position and adjusting a speed of the change of the value in response to the position increasing.

20. The system of claim 17, further comprising examining content of a document near the value to determine potential values to display within the user interface element.
