Abstract

An architecture is described that can determine a scanning schedule for reselection scanning in connection with a wireless communication network or service. The architecture can monitor various indicia relating to recent movement of user equipment (UE) such as a wireless device, and, based upon such recent movement indicia, construct a mobility pattern for the UE. In addition, based upon the mobility pattern, the architecture can generate a reselection scanning schedule for the UE designed to optimize tradeoffs between battery life and network awareness.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a memory to store computer-executable instructions; and

a processor, communicatively coupled to the memory, that facilitates execution of the computer-executable instructions to perform operations, comprising;

determining pattern of motion data for a user equipment representing a pattern of motion for the user equipment based on analyzing history data representing a history of selection scans performed by the user equipment, wherein the selection scans are scans by the user equipment that select an access point device from among available access point devices associated with a communications network; and

in response to analyzing the pattern of motion data, classifying the user equipment into a rate of motion category relating to a rate of motion of the user equipment.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the classifying includes classifying the rate of motion of the user equipment into the rate of motion category in response to the analyzing the history data indicating that the history data includes a single access point device identification.

The system of claim 1, wherein the classifying includes classifying the rate of motion of the user equipment into the rate of motion category in response to the analyzing the history data indicating that the history data includes a number of access point device identifications, wherein the number is predetermined and less than a threshold, and the access point devices provide overlapping wireless communication coverage for the user equipment in connection with the communications network.

The system of claim 1, wherein the classifying includes classifying the rate of motion of the user equipment into the rate of motion category in response to the analyzing history data indicating that the history data includes a number of access point device identifications, wherein the number is predetermined and less than a threshold, and a first wireless communication coverage for the user equipment provided by a first access point device of the number of access point devices does not overlap with a second wireless communication coverage for the user equipment provided by a second access point device of the number of access point devices.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the classifying includes classifying the rate of motion of the user equipment into the rate of motion category in response to the analyzing the history data indicating that the history data includes a repeating set of selected access point device identifications.

The system of claim 1, wherein the classifying includes classifying the rate of motion of the user equipment into the rate of motion category in response to the analyzing the history data indicating that the history data includes a number of access point device identifications, wherein the number is predetermined and greater than a threshold, and a first wireless communication coverage for the user equipment provided by a first access point device of the number of access point devices does not overlap with a second wireless communication coverage for the user equipment provided by a second access point device in the number of access point devices.

The system of claim 1, wherein the classifying includes classifying rate of motion of the user equipment into the rate of motion category in response to the analyzing the history data indicating that the history data includes a set of selected access point device identifications without a repeat identification.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the operations further comprise:

determining schedule data representing a selection scan schedule for the user equipment based on the rate of motion category to which the user equipment is classified.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the operations further comprise facilitating an implementation of the selection scan schedule on the user equipment based on the schedule data.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the rate of motion includes a speed, and the operations further comprise:

determining the speed of the user equipment based upon the pattern of motion data.

11. A method, comprising:

analyzing, by a system including a processor, history data associated with a history of selection scans associated with a user equipment, wherein the selection scans identify an access point device selected by the user equipment to connect to a communications network;

determining, by the system, pattern data representing a pattern of motion for the user equipment based on the analyzing the history data associated with the history of selection scans; and

categorizing, by the system, the user equipment into a group associated with a rate of speed of the user equipment.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising determining, by the system, schedule data representing a selection scan schedule for the user equipment as a function of the group into which the user equipment is categorized.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising determining, by the system, the speed of the user equipment based upon the pattern data for the user equipment.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the categorizing includes categorizing the user equipment into a rate of speed group in response to the analyzing the history data indicating no duplicate access point device identifications are included in the history data.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the categorizing includes categorizing the user equipment into a rate of speed group in response to the analyzing the history data indicating a set of duplicate access point device identifications are included in the history data, wherein the set of duplicate access point device identifications are associated with access point devices that provide overlapping network coverage for the user equipment.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein the categorizing includes categorizing the user equipment into a rate of speed group in response to the analyzing the history data indicating a number of duplicate access point device identifications are included in the history data, wherein the number of duplicate access point device identifications are associated with access point devices that provide non-overlapping network coverage for the user equipment.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein the categorizing includes categorizing the user equipment into a rate of speed group in response to the analyzing the history data indicating no duplicate access point device identifications are included in the history data.

18. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a system including a processor, selection scan history data associated with a user equipment, wherein the selection scan history data represents a history of access point devices selected by the user equipment to connect to the wireless communication network;

determining, by the system, pattern data representing a pattern of motion for the user equipment in response to analyzing the selection scan history data; and

classifying, by the system, the user equipment into a rate of motion category based upon the pattern data.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising directing a transmission representing the rate of motion category to the user equipment.

20. The method of claim 18, further comprising determining schedule data representing a selection scan schedule for the user equipment based upon the rate of motion category and directing a transmission of the schedule data to the user equipment.
