Abstract

A system for and method of for detecting a non-functional battery back-up unit (BBU) of an optical network terminal is presented. The system and method may include receiving power outage data associated with a plurality of customer sites, receiving, from each of the plurality of customer sites, discharge time data associated with a battery via a network, calculating a mean discharge time based on the discharge time data, comparing the discharge time data associated with each battery to the mean discharge time, determining that each battery that is associated with discharge time data that indicates a discharge time value that is less than the mean discharge time is faulty, and outputting a data signal that indicates that a battery is faulty.

10. A system, comprising:

a power data computing apparatus configured to receive power restored data associated with a plurality of customer sites;

a recharge time computing apparatus configured to receive, from each of the plurality of customer sites, recharge time data associated with a battery via a network and calculate a mean recharge time based on the recharge time data; and

a faulty determination computing apparatus configured to compare the recharge time data associated with each battery to the mean recharge time, determine that each battery that is associated with recharge time data that indicates a recharge time value that is greater than the mean recharge time is faulty, and output a data signal that indicates that a battery is faulty.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the power data computing apparatus is further configured to receive power restored data by receiving power restored data that indicates that the plurality of customer sites are receiving power from a commercial power source.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the recharge time value comprises a value that indicates an amount of time for the battery to become fully recharged.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the recharge time computing apparatus is further configured to calculate a minimum recharge time based on the recharge time data.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the faulty determination computing apparatus is further configured to compare the recharge time data associated with each battery to the minimum recharge time.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the faulty determination computing apparatus is further configured to determine that each battery that is associated with recharge time data that indicates a recharge time value that is greater than the minimum recharge time by a predetermined proportion is faulty.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein each battery is coupled to an optical network terminal.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein each battery is included in a different battery back-up unit of the optical network terminal.

18. The system of claim 10, wherein the network comprises an optical network.

40. The system of claim 10, wherein the recharge time data is automatically output to the recharge time computer apparatus when a power loss occurs.

29. A method, comprising;

receiving power restored data associated with a plurality of customer sites;

receiving, from each of the plurality of customer sites, recharge time data associated with a battery via a network;

calculating a mean recharge time based on the recharge time data;

comparing the recharge time data associated with each battery to the mean recharge time;

determining that each battery that is associated with recharge time data that indicates a recharge time value that is greater than the mean recharge time is faulty; and

outputting a data signal that indicates that a battery is faulty.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein receiving power restored data further comprises receiving power restored data that indicates that the plurality of customer sites are receiving power from a commercial power source.

31. The method of claim 29, wherein the recharge time value comprises a value that indicates an amount of time for the battery to become fully recharged.

32. The method of claim 29, further comprising calculating a minimum recharge time based on the recharge time data.

33. The method of claim 32, further comprising comparing the recharge time data associated with each battery to the minimum recharge time.

34. The method of claim 33, further comprising determining that each battery that is associated with recharge time data that indicates a recharge time value that is greater than a the minimum recharge time by a predetermined portion is faulty.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein each battery is coupled to an optical network terminal.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein each battery is included in a different battery back-up unit of the optical network terminal.

37. The method of claim 29, wherein the network comprises an optical network.

39. The method of claim 29, wherein the recharge time data is received automatically when a power loss occurs.
