Abstract

A contactless power supply is provided. The contactless power supply includes two or more primary coils for generating a region of cooperative magnetic flux generally therebetween. A portable device having a secondary coil can be positioned proximate this region of magnetic flux to receive wireless power from the contactless power supply. The spaced-apart primary coils can be wound in alternating directions about a common axis and driven in phase, or can be wound in a single direction about a common axis and driven approximately 180 degrees out of phase. The contactless power supply can include a plurality of primary coils in an adjustable array to accommodate multiple portable devices each with different secondary configurations and power consumption needs.

Claims

1. A contactless power supply comprising:

a power transfer surface to receive at least one remote device thereon;

a first primary coil array subjacent the power transfer surface and including a plurality of spaced-apart inductive primaries each being wound about an axis generally parallel to the power transfer surface; and

a power supply electrically connected to each of the plurality of inductive primaries, wherein the power supply is operable to selectively drive a first two of the plurality of inductive primaries to define a first cumulative electromagnetic flux and operable to selectively drive a second two of the plurality of inductive primaries to define a second cumulative electromagnetic flux.

2. The contactless power supply of claim 1 wherein:

the power supply is operable to drive the first two of the plurality of inductive primaries substantially out of phase; and

the power supply is operable to drive the second two of the plurality of inductive primaries substantially out of phase.

3. The contactless power supply of claim 1 wherein:

the first two of the plurality of inductive primaries are separated by a first distance; and

the second two of the plurality of inductive primaries are separated by a second distance different from the first distance.

4. The contactless power supply of claim 1 wherein the power supply is operable to monitor a characteristic of power in the plurality of inductive primaries to detect the presence of a remote device in proximity to the first primary coil array.

5. The contactless power supply of claim 1 further including a second primary coil array subjacent the power transfer surface including a plurality of spaced-apart inductive primaries each being wound about an axis generally orthogonal to the first primary coil array.

6. The contactless power supply of claim 1 wherein the power supply includes a driver and a switching circuit for simultaneously driving at least two of the plurality of inductive primaries substantially out of phase.

7. The contactless power supply of claim 1 wherein the power supply includes first and second drivers for simultaneously driving at least two of the plurality of inductive primaries substantially out of phase.

8. The contactless power supply of claim 1 wherein the first primary coil array includes a ferromagnetic core element.

9. The contactless power supply of claim 1 wherein the first primary coil array includes a substantially planar bobbin.

10. The contactless power supply of claim 1 wherein the remote device includes an inductive secondary defining a centerline axis generally perpendicular to the power transfer surface.

11. A method for manufacturing a contactless power supply comprising:

providing a conductor having first and second end portions;

winding the conductor in a first direction to form a first inductive primary;

winding the conductor in a second direction different from the first direction to form a second inductive primary, the first and second inductive primaries being spaced apart and substantially coaxial; and

electrically connecting the first and second conductor end portions to a power supply operable to drive the conductor with a time-varying current.

12. The method according to claim 11 wherein the first and second inductive primaries each define substantially the same impedance.

13. The method according to claim 11 wherein the conductor is a first conductor and further including:

winding a second conductor in a first direction to form a third inductive primary and winding the second conductor in a second direction to form a fourth inductive primary, the third and fourth inductive primaries being spaced apart from each other and generally orthogonal to the first and second inductive primaries; and

wherein each of the third and fourth inductive primaries circumferentiate a portion of the first and second inductive primaries.

14. The method according to claim 13 further including electrically connecting the second conductor to the power supply.

15. A method for manufacturing a contactless power supply comprising:

winding a first conductor to form first and second coaxial inductive primaries;

cutting the first conductor between the first and second inductive primaries; and

electrically connecting the first and second inductive primaries to a power supply operable to drive the first and second inductive primaries with a time-varying current, wherein the first and second inductive primaries are spaced apart to define a region of cumulative magnetic flux therebetween.

16. The method according to claim 15, wherein each of the first and second inductive primaries includes first and second leads electrically connected to the power supply.

17. The method according to claim 16 wherein the power supply includes first and second drivers, the method further including:

electrically connecting the first and second leads of the first inductive primary to the first driver; and

electrically connecting the first and second leads of the second inductive primary to the second driver.

18. The method according to claim 16 wherein the power supply includes a driver, the method further including:

electrically connecting the first and second leads of the first inductive primary to the driver; and

electrically connecting the first and second leads of the second inductive primary to the driver.

19. The method according to claim 15 wherein the power supply includes a switching circuit for selectively driving the first and second inductive primaries substantially in phase and substantially out of phase.

20. The method according to claim 15 further including winding a second conductor to form third and fourth coaxial inductive primaries, wherein the third and fourth inductive primaries circumferentiate a portion of the first and second inductive primaries and are generally orthogonal to the first and second inductive primaries.
