Abstract

The present invention encompasses methods that use heat and/or electromagnetic radiation for dermatological treatment and more particularly to a method that uses heat and/or electromagnetic radiation in combination with chromophores for fractional wounding and, in particular, discontinuous fractional damage of skin tissue.

Claims

27. An apparatus for fractional wounding of skin, comprising:

a first structural arrangement that is configured to apply at least one chromophore in a specific pattern to a predetermined area of the skin, wherein the specific pattern corresponds to a desired pattern of fractional wounding of the skin; and

a second structural arrangement that is configured to provide electromagnetic radiation to the predetermined area of the skin so as to produce a plurality of thermally-damaged regions in an epidermal portion of the skin based on an interaction between the at least one chromophore and the electromagnetic radiation.

The apparatus of claim 27, further comprising a third structural arrangement that is configured to remove a first portion of the at least one chromophore from a surface of the skin prior to applying the electromagnetic radiation, wherein a second portion of the at least one chromophore remains in pores of the skin.

29. The apparatus of claim 28, wherein the first arrangement is configured to apply the at least one chromophore to the skin in the form of a powder.

30. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the first arrangement comprises at least one of a grid, a mesh, a roller, a stamp or a stencil.

31. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the specific pattern is applied by the first arrangement using an attachment medium.

32. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the attachment medium is an adhesive.

33. The apparatus of claim 32 wherein the attachment medium is at least one of an acrylide, a derma-bond or a glue.

34. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the attachment medium is light-activated.

35. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein a smallest dimension of the plurality of thermally damaged regions of the tissue is between about 1 μ

m and about 1000 μ

m.

36. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein a smallest dimension of the plurality of thermally damaged regions of the tissue is between about 100 μ

m and about 800 μ

m.

37. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein a distance between adjacent ones of the thermally damaged regions of the tissue is between about 10 μ

m and about 2000 μ

m.

38. The apparatus of claim 27, wherein the thermally-damaged regions are further produced in a dermal portion of the skin.

39. An apparatus for fractional wounding of skin, comprising;

a masking arrangement that is structured to cover at least a portion of the predetermined area of the skin; and

a radiation arrangement that is configured to apply electromagnetic radiation to the predetermined area so as to generate regions of a thermal injury in an epidermal portion of the skin based on an interaction between the electromagnetic radiation and at least one of the masking arrangement or at least one chromophore that is applied to the skin,

wherein a predetermined pattern of fractional wounding is formed based on the masking arrangement.

40. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein the masking arrangement comprises at least one of a grid, a mesh, a stamp or a stencil.

41. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein the masking arrangement masks a portion of the predetermined area of the skin from at least a portion of the electromagnetic radiation, and wherein the thermal injury occurs where the skin is not masked by the masking arrangement.

42. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the masking arrangement comprises at least one of a grid, a mesh or a stencil.

The apparatus of claim 39, wherein the masking arrangement is configured to preferentially absorb the electromagnetic radiation, the at least one chromophore is a reflective chromophore, and the thermal injury occurs in at least a portion of the predetermined area of the skin that is in contact with the masking arrangement.

44. The apparatus of claim 43, wherein the at least one chromophore is at least one of a glass bead, a gold flake, a metal particle, a mirrored glass bead, a salt crystal, or silica.

45. The apparatus of claim 39, further comprising an applicator arrangement configured to apply the at least one chromophore to the predetermined area of the skin.

46. The apparatus of claim 39, wherein the at least one chromophore is a phase transition chromophore.
