Abstract

A wireless communication device comprising a housing comprising a plurality of edges and configured to serve as an external surface for the wireless communication device, and an antenna adjacent to at least a first edge of the housing, wherein the antenna comprises at least a conductive strip and at least one slot and wherein the antenna is configured to receive and transmit wireless signals, wherein the first edge of the housing is one of an edge of the housing nearest an ear piece and an edge of the housing that is opposite the edge of the housing nearest the ear piece, and wherein the conductive strip and the slot are adjacent to at least the first edge of the housing.

Claims

1. A wireless communication device comprising:

a housing comprising a plurality of edges and configured to serve as an external surface for the wireless communication device; and

an antenna adjacent to at least a first edge of the housing, wherein the antenna comprises at least a conductive strip and at least one slot and wherein the antenna is configured to receive and transmit wireless signals,

wherein the first edge of the housing is one of an edge of the housing nearest an ear piece and an edge of the housing that is opposite the edge of the housing nearest the ear piece, and

wherein the conductive strip and the slot are adjacent to at least the first edge of the housing.

2. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the slot comprises a dielectric filling that occupies at least a portion of the slot.

3. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the slot comprises a dielectric coating over the slot.

4. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the housing comprises a metallic material.

5. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the slot has a substantially circular or elliptical shape.

6. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the at least one slot is one of a plurality of slots and the plurality of slots are located symmetrically along the bottom edge.

7. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the at least one slot is one of a plurality of slots and the plurality of slots are located asymmetrically along the bottom edge.

8. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein a ratio of a width of a slot to a length of the bottom edge is greater than or equal to 1 to 60.

9. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the slot has a width greater than or equal to 1 millimeter.

10. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the conductive strip is a stamped metal sheet that has an electrical resistivity less than or equal to one micro-ohm meter.

11. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the conductive strip is a flexible printed circuit on a polymer substrate.

12. The wireless communication device of claim 1, wherein the antenna is configured to operated at a frequency within the range of 824 megahertz to 2690 megahertz.

13. A housing for a wireless communication device comprising:

a plurality of first edges and a plurality of second edges, wherein the plurality of first edges and the plurality of second edges are configured to form at least part of an external surface for the wireless communication device, wherein the plurality of first edges are longer than the plurality of second edges; and

an antenna adjacent to at least one of the plurality of second edges, wherein the antenna comprises at least a conductive strip and at least one slot, wherein the slot is adjacent to the at least one of the plurality of second edges, and wherein the antenna is configured to receive and transmit wireless signals.

14. The housing of claim 13, wherein the conductive strip is a stamped metal sheet that has an electrical resistivity less than or equal to one micro-ohm meter.

15. The housing of claim 13, wherein the conductive strip is a flexible printed circuit on a polymer substrate.

16. The housing of claim 13, wherein a plurality of slots are located symmetrically along the at least one of the plurality of second edges.

17. The housing of claim 13, wherein a plurality of slots are located asymmetrically along the at least one of the plurality of second edges.

18. The housing of claim 13, wherein the slot has a width greater than or equal to 1 millimeter.

19. The housing of claim 13, wherein a ratio of a width of a slot to a length of the at least one of the plurality of second edges is greater than or equal to 1 to 60.

20. The housing of claim 13, wherein the slot comprises a dielectric filling that occupies at least a portion of the slot.

21. The housing of claim 13, wherein the slot comprises a dielectric coating over the slot.

22. The housing of claim 13, wherein the slot has a substantially circular or elliptical shape.

23. The housing of claim 13, wherein at least a portion of the housing comprises an electrically conductive material.

24. The housing of claim 23, wherein the electrically conductive material comprises a metallic material.
