Abstract

Systems and methods for communicating in a wireless communication system are described. Various processes for reducing the initial link setup time are described. In one aspect a method in a wireless communication system is provided. The method includes queuing for transmission, at a first device, a first message for requesting information to establish a link with an access point, the first message including a network identifier for the access point. The method further includes, before transmission of the message, receiving a second message including the information. The method further includes removing the message from the queue when the second message includes the information.

Claims

1. A method of reducing signaling during link setup in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

queuing for transmission, at a first device, a first message for requesting information to establish a link with an access point, the first message including a network identifier for the access point;

before transmission of the message, receiving a second message including the information; and

removing the message from the queue when the second message includes the information.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the network identifier comprises a network domain identifier, the network domain identifier associated with at least one network.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the first message comprises a probe request.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the second message comprises at least one of a probe response or a beacon frame.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the probe response is generated by the access point in response to a probe request from a third device.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first message comprises a probe response.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the second message comprises an association request.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the association request requests association with the first device.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the association request requests association with a third device.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the second message is addressed to a third device.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the first device comprises a terminal and the access point comprises an access point.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the first message comprises an access network query protocol request, and wherein the second message comprises an access network protocol response.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the first message comprises an access network query protocol response, and wherein the second message comprises an access network query protocol request.

14. A device configured to reduce signaling during link setup in a wireless communication system, the device comprising:

a queue configured to store a message for requesting information to establish a link with an access point, the first message including a network identifier for the access point;

a receiver configured to, before transmission of the first message, receive another message including the information; and

a processor configured to remove the first message from the queue when the second message includes the information.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein the network identifier comprises a network domain identifier, the network domain identifier associated with at least one network.

16. The device of claim 14, wherein the first message comprises a probe request.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein the second message comprises at least one of a probe response or a beacon frame.

18. The device of claim 17, wherein the probe response is generated by the access point in response to a probe request from a third device.

19. The device of claim 14, wherein the first message comprises a probe response.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the second message comprises an association request.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein the association request requests association with the first device.

22. The device of claim 20, wherein the association request requests association with a third device.

23. The device of claim 14, wherein the second message is addressed to a third device.

24. The device of claim 14, wherein the first device comprises a terminal and the access point comprises an access point.

25. The device of claim 14, wherein the first message comprises an access network query protocol request, and wherein the second message comprises an access network protocol response.

26. The device of claim 14, wherein the first message comprises an access network query protocol response, and wherein the second message comprises an access network query protocol request.

27. An apparatus for reducing signaling during link setup in a wireless communication system, the apparatus comprising:

means for queuing a message for requesting information to establish a link with an access point, the first message including a network identifier for the access point;

means for receiving, before transmission of the first message, another message including the first information; and

means for removing the first message from the queue when the second message includes the information.

28. A computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions executable by a processor of an apparatus in a wireless communication system, the instructions causing the apparatus to:

queue for transmission a message for requesting information to establish a link with an access point, the first message including a network identifier for the access point;

receive, before transmission of the first message, another message including the first information; and

remove the first message from the queue when the second message includes the information.
