Abstract

A communication device comprising a microprocessor readable computer readable medium is provided that includes microprocessor executable instructions to alter displayed information based on screen orientation.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a microprocessor, information to be displayed on a screen of a communication device;

determining an orientation of the screen relative to a selected point of reference;

based on the results of the determining step, selecting, by the microprocessor, a first subset of the information to display on the screen; and

displaying, by the screen, the first subset of information on the screen.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining step is determined by an accelerometer, wherein the orientation of the screen is one of portrait and landscape, and further comprising:

detecting a change in orientation of the screen relative to the selected point of reference;

in response to the change in orientation, selecting a second subset of the information, different from the first subset of information, to display on the screen; and

displaying the second subset of information on the screen.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining whether a single or multiple window panes are to be displayed on the screen, wherein the selection of the first subset of information is based in part on whether a single or multiple window panes are to be displayed on the screen.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining whether the information comprises output from first and second applications, wherein the selection of the first subset of information is based in part on whether the information comprises output from only one or both of the first and second applications.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the screen is capable of the following display modes:

a portrait single display mode, wherein the second screen is in a portrait orientation and only the first software application is currently providing a maximized view, in portrait, for the displayed information on a display;

a portrait multi-application mode, wherein the second screen is in a portrait orientation and the first and second software applications are simultaneously providing a maximized view, in landscape, for the display;

a landscape single application mode, wherein the second screen is in a landscape orientation and only the first software application is providing a maximized view, in landscape, for the display; and

a landscape multi-application mode, wherein the second screen is in a portrait orientation and the first and a second software applications are simultaneously providing a maximized view, in portrait, for the display.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein, in a first screen orientation, at least one of a set of action controls and set of navigation controls is displayed but the at least one of a set of action controls and set of navigation controls is not displayed in a different second screen orientation.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein in a first screen orientation, at least one of a set of action controls and set of navigation controls is displayed in a first position relative to the selected point of reference and the at least one of a set of action controls and set of navigation controls is displayed in a different position relative to the selected point of reference in a different second screen orientation.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the information comprises one or more command icons and wherein the first subset of information excludes the one or more command icons.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the information comprises a first graphical and/or datum element and wherein the first subset of information excludes the first graphical and/or datum element.

10. A computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by a microprocessor, perform the steps of claim 1.

11. A system, comprising:

a microprocessor;

a screen to display information to a user; and

a computer readable medium comprising microprocessor executable instructions operable to;

receiving the information to be displayed on a screen of a communication device;

determine an orientation of the screen relative to a selected point of reference;

based on the results of the determining step, select a first subset of the information to display on the screen; and

display the first subset of information on the screen.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the determining step is determined by an accelerometer, wherein the orientation of the screen is one of portrait and landscape, and further comprising:

detecting a change in orientation of the screen relative to the selected point of reference;

in response to the change in orientation, selecting a second subset of the information, different from the first subset of information, to display on the screen; and

displaying the second subset of information on the screen.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the instructions, when executed, are operable to:

determine whether a single or multiple window panes are to be displayed on the screen, wherein the selection of the first subset of information is based in part on whether a single or multiple window panes are to be displayed on the screen.

14. The system of claim 11, wherein the instructions, when executed, are operable to:

determine whether the information comprises output from first and second applications, wherein the selection of the first subset of information is based in part on whether the information comprises output from only one or both of the first and second applications.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the screen is capable of the following display modes:

a portrait single display mode, wherein the second screen is in a portrait orientation and only the first software application is currently providing a maximized view, in portrait, for the displayed information on a display;

a portrait multi-application mode, wherein the second screen is in a portrait orientation and the first and second software applications are simultaneously providing a maximized view, in landscape, for the display;

a landscape single application mode, wherein the second screen is in a landscape orientation and only the first software application is providing a maximized view, in landscape, for the display; and

a landscape multi-application mode, wherein the second screen is in a portrait orientation and the first and a second software applications are simultaneously providing a maximized view, in portrait, for the display.

16. The system of claim 11, wherein, in a first screen orientation, at least one of a set of action controls and set of navigation controls is displayed but the at least one of a set of action controls and set of navigation controls is not displayed in a different second screen orientation.

17. The system of claim 11, wherein in a first screen orientation, at least one of a set of action controls and set of navigation controls is displayed in a first position relative to the selected point of reference and the at least one of a set of action controls and set of navigation controls is displayed in a different position relative to the selected point of reference in a different second screen orientation.

18. The system of claim 11, wherein the information comprises one or more command icons and wherein the first subset of information excludes the one or more command icons.

19. The system of claim 11, wherein the information comprises a first graphical and/or datum element and wherein the first subset of information excludes the first graphical and/or datum element.

20. The system of claim 11, wherein the software application is a media application.

21. The system of claim 11, wherein the software application is a calendar application.

22. The system of claim 11, wherein the software application is a messaging application.
