Abstract

A system for processing text captured from rendered documents is described. The system receives a sequence of one or more words optically or acoustically captured from a rendered document by a user. The system identifies among words of the sequence a word with which an action has been associated. The system then performs the associated action with respect to the user.

21. A method comprising:

storing, within a computer memory device, a data structure comprising a plurality of keywords, and for each keyword of the plurality of keywords, a condition identifier associated with the each keyword, and an action identifier associated with the each keyword and with the condition identifier associated with the each keyword;

receiving a sequence of characters optically or acoustically captured by a capture device;

determining that a first keyword of the plurality of keywords matches the received sequence of characters and that a first condition identified by the condition identifier associated with the first keyword is met; and

performing a first action identified by the action identifier associated with the first keyword and with the condition identifier associated with the first keyword.

22. The method of claim 21,

wherein the plurality of keywords comprises a second keyword, and

wherein the first keyword and the second keyword are identical.

23. The method of claim 22,

wherein the action identifier associated with the first keyword comprises a first action identifier,

wherein the action identifier associated with the second keyword comprises a second action identifier, and

wherein the first action identifier is different from the second action identifier.

24. The method of claim 22,

wherein the condition identifier associated with the first keyword comprises a first condition identifier,

wherein the condition identifier associated with the second keyword comprises a second condition identifier, and

wherein the first condition identifier is different from the second condition identifier.

25. The method of claim 21, wherein performing the first action comprises the capture device performing the first action.

26. The method of claim 21,

wherein receiving the sequence of characters is carried out using a server device that is remote from the capture device, and

wherein performing the first action comprises the server device performing the first action.

27. The method of claim 21,

wherein the sequence of characters captured by the capture device are captured from a rendered document,

wherein the condition identifier associated with the first keyword comprises a first document identifier, and

wherein the first condition is met if a document identifier of the rendered document matches the first document identifier.

28. The method of claim 21,

wherein the sequence of characters captured by the capture device are captured from a rendered document,

wherein the condition identifier associated with the first keyword comprises a first document type identifier, and

wherein the first condition is met if the rendered document is a type of document that matches the first document type identifier.

29. The method of claim 21,

wherein the condition identifier associated with the first keyword comprises a time-of-day interval, and

wherein the first condition is met if the capture device captured the sequence of characters at a time of day within the time-of-day interval.

30. The method of claim 21,

wherein the condition identifier associated with the first keyword comprises a zip code range, and

wherein the first condition is met if the capture device captured the sequence of characters while the capture device was at a location within an area associated with a zip code within the zip code range.

31. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

storing, within the computer memory device, a user-profile associated with the capture device,

wherein the condition identifier associated with the first keyword comprises a first user-interest, and

wherein the first condition is met if the user profile associated with the capture device comprises the first user-interest.

32. The method of claim 21, wherein the action identifier associated with the each keyword comprises at least one of an action verb and an action object.

33. The method of claim 21, wherein the action identifier associated with the each keyword comprises an action type identifier selected from the group consisting of (i) sending an e-mail action identifier, (ii) a displaying hypertext link action identifier, and (iii) go to web page action identifier.

34. The method of claim 21, wherein the action identifier associated with the each keyword comprises an action object selected from the group consisting of (i) an e-mail address, (ii) a web page uniform resource locator, and (iii) a text message for displaying on a display device.

35. A server device comprising:

a processor;

a computer memory device storing a data structure comprising a plurality of keywords, and for each keyword of the plurality of keywords, a condition identifier associated with the each keyword, and an action identifier associated with the each keyword and with the condition identifier associated with the each keyword; and

a network connection that receives from a network a sequence of characters optically or acoustically captured by a capture device,

wherein the processor determines that a first keyword of the plurality of keywords matches the received sequence of characters and that a first condition identified by the condition identifier associated with the first keyword is met, and

wherein the processor identifies a first action identified by the action identifier associated with the first keyword and with the condition identifier associated with the first keyword.

36. The server device of claim 35,

wherein the sequence of characters is captured from a rendered document,

wherein the computer memory stores a document identification index for identifying the rendered document based on the received sequence of characters,

wherein the condition identifier associated with the first keyword comprises a first document identifier within the document identification index, and

wherein the first condition is met if a document identifier of the rendered document matches the first document identifier.

37. The server device of claim 35, wherein the processor performs the first action identified by the action identifier associated with the first keyword and with the condition identifier associated with the first keyword.

38. A capture device comprising:

a processor;

a computer memory device storing a data structure comprising a plurality of keywords, and for each keyword of the plurality of keywords, a condition identifier associated with the each keyword, and an action identifier associated with the each keyword and with the condition identifier associated with the each keyword; and

a capture component configured to optically or acoustically capture a sequence of characters,

wherein the processor determines that a first keyword of the plurality of keywords matches the captured sequence of characters and that a first condition identified by the condition identifier associated with the first keyword is met, and

wherein the processor identifies a first action identified by the action identifier associated with the first keyword and with the condition identifier associated with the first keyword.

39. The capture device of claim 38, wherein the capture device is integrated within a mobile phone.

40. The capture device of claim 38, wherein the capture device performs the first action identified by the action identifier associated with the first keyword and with the condition identifier associated with the first keyword.
