Abstract

A method and system for micro-cloud computing is described. An application serving node, which is a specifically configured piece of customer premises equipment such as a set-top box, is the server for a micro-cloud network. Various user devices that form part of the micro-cloud network, such as television sets and smart phones, communicate with the application serving node. The application serving node is configured with software that allows various heterogeneous types of data to be obtained and streamed to the user devices in multiple ways. The application serving node performs much of the processing necessary for such content streaming itself and thus represents an edge-based network architecture.

Claims

1. A method for a user to view a content stream on a first user device and transition to viewing said content on a second user device, the method comprising:

a. presenting said content on said first user device, said first user device connected and registered to a serving node, said content streaming to said user device through said serving node;

b. presenting a selectable menu option on said first user device for said user to continue viewing said content on a second user device registered to said serving node;

c. said serving node continuing to stream said content to said second user device.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said serving node transcodes said content for said first user device.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein said serving node transrates said content for said first user device.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said serving node formats said content for said first user device.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein said serving node transcodes said content for said second user device.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein said serving node transrates said content for said second user device.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein said serving node reformats said content for said second user device.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein said serving node is a CPE located at the premises of the user.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein, on selection by said user, said content stream is displayed simultaneously on both said first device and said second device.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein said content stream is obtained from a source on the Internet.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein said content stream is obtained from a television tuner in said serving node.

12. The method of claim 8 wherein said content stream stops on said first user device when it is displayed on said second user device.

13. A system for transitioning content from a first user device to a second user device, comprising:

a. a serving node having a television tuner, a connection to the Internet, a transcoder module, and a transrating module;

b. a first user device capable of displaying a stream of content;

c. a second user device capable of displaying a stream of content;

wherein said serving node presents a menu with an option for transitioning content on said first user device as said first user device receives said streaming content transcoded and transrated by said serving node, on selection of said option, said serving node transcodes and transrates said streaming content, and communicates said streaming content to said second user device.
