Abstract

Systems and methods for communicating packets having a plurality of formats are described herein. In some aspects, a signal (SIG) field in the preamble of a packet may indicate whether an extension field, such as an extension SIG field or SIG-B field, is included in the packet. In another aspect, one or more detectors may be used to auto-detect packets formatted as one of at least two different formats based on a short training field (STF) of a received packet. In some aspects, along training field (LTF) in the preamble of a packet may indicate whether the payload is repetition coded.

Claims

1. An apparatus for wireless communication, comprising:

a receiver configured to wirelessly receive data packets having at least two formats, the receiver comprising a first detector configured to detect data packets of at least one of the two formats and a second detector configured to detect data packets of another of the two formats; and

a processor configured to process a received data packet based at least in part on whether the received data packet was detected by the first detector or the second detector.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the data packets of the at least one format and the data packets of the another format each comprise a training field having a sequence, and wherein the sequence is repeated a greater number of times in the at least one format than in the another format.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the training field of each of formats comprises a short training field (STF).

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the first detector is configured to detect packets of the at least one format based at least in part on the STF of the at least one format, and wherein the second detector is configured to detect packets of the another format based at least in part on the STF of the another format.

5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the training field of each of the formats comprises a long training field (LTF).

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the data packets of the at least one format and the data packets of the another format each comprise a training field symbol, wherein the training field symbol of the at least one format is flipped with respect to the training field symbol of the another format.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the data packets of the at least one format and the data packets of the another format each comprise a signal (SIG) field, wherein the SIG field of the at least one format is longer than the SIG field of the another format.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the SIG field of the at least one format comprises a plurality of bits that is repeated four times.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the plurality of bits comprises nineteen bits.

10. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the SIG field of the another format comprises two symbols.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the data packets of the another format each include a payload and a preamble comprising a 2-symbol STF field, a 2-symbol LTF field, and a 2-symbol SIG field, and the data packets of the at least one format each include a payload and a preamble comprising a 4-symbol STF field, a 4-symbol LTF field, and a 5-symbol or 6-symbol SIG field.

12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein data packets of one of the two formats include an extension field which comprises information for advanced features.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the advanced features include at least one of open loop MIMO transmission, LDPC, single-user MIMO, use of a Midamble, use of STBC, and use of PAID.

14. A method of wireless communication, comprising:

wirelessly receiving a data packet having one of at least two formats;

detecting a format of the received data packet using one of at least two detectors configured to detect respective data packet formats; and

processing the received data packet based on the detected format.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein data packets having a first format of the two formats and data packets having a second format of the at least two formats each comprise a training field having a sequence, and wherein the sequence is repeated a greater number of times in the first format than in the second format.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the training field of each of the formats comprises a short training field (STF).

17. The method of claim 16, wherein a first of the two detectors is configured to detect packets of the first format based at least in part on the STF of the at least one format, and wherein a second of the two detectors is configured to detect packets of the second format based at least in part on the STF of the another format.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the training field of each of the formats comprises a long training field (LTF).

19. The method of claim 14, wherein data packets having a first format of the two formats and data packets having a second format of the at least two formats each comprise a training field symbol, wherein the training field symbol of the first format is flipped with respect to the training field symbol of the second format.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein data packets having a first format of the two formats and data packets having a second format of the at least two formats each comprise a signal (SIG) field, wherein the SIG field of the first format is longer than the SIG field of the second format.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the SIG field of the first format comprises a plurality of bits that is repeated four times.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the plurality of bits comprises nineteen bits.

23. The method of claim 20, wherein the SIG field of the second format comprises two symbols.

24. The method of claim 14, wherein the data packets of a second format each include a payload and a preamble comprising a 2-symbol STF field, a 2-symbol LTF field, and a 2-symbol SIG field, and the data packets of a first format each include a payload and a preamble comprising a 4-symbol STF field, a 4-symbol LTF field, and a 5-symbol or 6-symbol SIG field.

25. The method of claim 14, wherein data packets of one of the two formats include an extension field which comprises information for advanced features.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the advanced features include at least one of open loop MIMO transmission, LDPC, single-user MIMO, use of a Midamble, use of STBC, and use of PAID.

27. An apparatus for wireless communication, comprising:

means for wirelessly receiving a data packet having one of at least two formats;

first means for detecting whether the received data packet has a first format;

second means for detecting whether the received data packet has a second format; and

means for processing the received data packet based on the first detecting means and the second detecting means.

28. A computer readable medium comprising instructions that when executed cause an apparatus to:

wirelessly receive a data packet having one of at least two formats;

detect a format of the received data packet using one of at least two detectors configured to detect respective data packet formats; and

process the received data packet based on the detected format.

29. An apparatus for wireless communication, comprising:

a processor configured to select a data packet format from at least two data packet formats comprising a training field, wherein the training field of one of the data packet formats includes a sequence repeated a greater number of times than in the training field of another of the data packet formats; and

a transmitter configured to transmit a wireless communication using the selected data packet format.

30. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the training field of each of the formats comprises a short training field (STF).

31. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the training field of each of the formats comprises a long training field (LTF).

32. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein a portion of the training field of the one format is flipped with respect to a portion of the training field of the another format.

33. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the data packets of the one format and the data packets of the another format each comprise a signal (SIG) field, wherein the SIG field of the one format is longer than the SIG field of the another format.

34. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein the SIG field of the one format comprises a plurality of bits that is repeated four times.

35. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the plurality of bits comprises nineteen hits.

36. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein the SIG field of the another format comprises two symbols.

37. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the data packets of the another format each include a payload and a preamble comprising a 2-symbol STF field, a 2-symbol LTF field, and a 2-symbol SIG field, and the data packets of the one format each include a payload and a preamble comprising a 4-symbol STF field, a 4-symbol LTF field, and a 5-symbol or 6-symbol SIG field.

38. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein data packets of one of the two formats include an extension field which comprises information for advanced features.

39. The apparatus of claim 38, wherein the advanced features include at least one of open loop MIMO transmission, LDPC, single-user MIMO, use of a Midamble, use of STBC, and use of PAID.

40. A method of wireless communication, comprising:

selecting a data packet format from at least two data packet formats comprising a training field, wherein the training field of one of the data packet formats includes a sequence repeated a greater number of times than in the training field of another of the data packet formats; and

transmitting a wireless communication using the selected data packet format.

41. The method of claim 40, wherein the training field of each of the formats comprises a short training field (STF).

42. The method of claim 40, wherein the training field of each of the formats comprises a long training field (LTF).

43. The method of claim 40, wherein a portion of the training field of the one format is flipped with respect to a portion of the training field of the another format.

44. The method of claim 40, wherein the data packets of the one format and the data packets of the another format each comprise a signal (SIG) field, wherein the SIG field of the one format is longer than the SIG field of the another format.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein the SIG field of the one format comprises a plurality of bits that is repeated four times.

46. The method of claim 45, wherein the plurality of bits comprises nineteen bits.

47. The method of claim 44, wherein the SIG field of the another format comprises two symbols.

48. The method of claim 40, wherein the data packets of the another format each include a payload and a preamble comprising a 2-symbol STF field, a 2-symbol LTF field, and a 2-symbol SIG field, and the data packets of the one format each include a payload and a preamble comprising a 4-symbol STF field, a 4-symbol LTF field, and a 5-symbol or 6-symbol SIG field.

49. The method of claim 40, wherein data packets of one of the two formats include an extension field which comprises information for advanced features.

50. The method of claim 49, wherein the advanced features include at least one of open loop MIMO transmission, LDPC, single-user MIMO, use of a Midamble, use of STBC, and use of PAID.

51. An apparatus for wireless communication, comprising:

means for selecting a data packet format from at least two data packet formats comprising a training field, wherein the training field of one of the data packet formats includes a sequence repeated a greater number of times than in the training field of another of the data packet formats; and

means for transmitting a wireless communication using the selected data packet format.

52. A computer readable medium comprising instructions that when executed cause an apparatus to:

select a data packet format from at least two data packet formats comprising a training field, wherein the training field of one of the data packet formats includes a sequence repeated a greater number of times than in the training field of another of the data packet formats; and

transmit a wireless communication using the selected data packet format.
