Abstract

Phacoemulsification apparatus includes a phacoemulsification handpiece having a needle and an electrical circuitry for ultrasonic vibrating the needle. A power source provides pulsed electrical power to the handpiece electrical circuitry and an input is provided for enabling a surgeon to select an amplitude of dislighted pulses and a pulse width. A control system and pulse duty cycle is provided for controlling the off duty cycle to insure heat dissipation before a subsequent pulse is activated, including a foot pedal switch.

Claims

1. A phacoemulsification apparatus comprising:

a phacoemulsification handpiece having

a needle, the needle configured to be ultrasonically vibrated;

a power source configured to provide a pulse of electrical power to the handpiece having a frequency that causes the needle to be driven along its longitudinal axis;

an input enabling a surgeon to select an ultrasonic pulse amplitude and a pulse duty cycle supplied to the handpiece; and

a computer programmed to respond to the selected pulse amplitude and the selected pulse duty cycle, wherein said computer controls the power source to provide the pulse of electrical power at a rate of between about 25 and about 2000 pulses per second.

2. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 1, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that there is an off duty cycle in between the pulses of electrical power to ensure heat dissipation before a subsequent pulse of electrical power is activated.

3. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 1, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that there is a period of no power to the needle that drives the needle along its longitudinal axis in between the pulses of electrical power.

The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 1, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that there is a period where a minimal amount of power is applied to the needle that causes the needle to oscillate generally along its longitudinal axis in between the pulses of electrical power.

5. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 1, further including a switch configured to receive manual input, of an ultrasonic power amplitude.

6. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 5, wherein said switch comprises a footswitch.

7. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 5, wherein said switch enables a linear selection of the ultrasonic power amplitude.

8. A phacoemulsification apparatus comprising:

a phacoemulsification handpiece having

a needle, the needle configured to be ultrasonically vibrated;

a power source configured to apply a period of electrical power to the handpiece, wherein the power within the period is applied at a frequency that causes the needle to be driven generally along its longitudinal axis;

an input enabling a surgeon to select a power amplitude and a duty cycle; and

a computer programmed to respond to the selected power amplitude and the selected duty cycle in defining the power amplitude and duration of the period of electrical power, wherein the duration of the period is less than twenty (20) millseconds.

9. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 8, wherein said computer controls the power source to provide said period of electrical power repeatedly at a rate of between about 25 and about 2000 pulses per second.

10. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 8, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that there is an off duty cycle in between said periods of electrical power to ensure heat dissipation in between said periods of electrical power.

The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 8, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that there is an interval in between said periods of electrical power wherein there is no power to the handpiece that drives the needle along its longitudinal axis in between said periods of electrical power.

12. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 8, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that there is an interval in between said periods of electrical power wherein any longitudinal vibration of the needle is minimized.

13. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 8, wherein the computer is further programmed to control the power source such that there is an interval in between said periods of electrical power wherein there is substantially no longitudinal vibration of the needle.

14. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 8, further including a switch configured to receive manual input of the power amplitude and duty cycle.

15. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 14, wherein said switch comprises a footswitch.

16. The phacoemulsification apparatus of claim 14, wherein said switch enables a linear selection of the power amplitude and duty cycle.

17. A method for operating a phacoemulsification system, the system including a phacoemulsification handpiece having a needle having a longitudinal axis and a power source configured to provide electrical power to the handpiece, said method comprising:

applying one or more cycles of electrical power from the power source to the handpiece, wherein the electrical power within the one or more cycles is applied at a frequency that causes the needle of the handpiece to oscillate generally along its longitudinal axis, wherein each of the one or more cycles of electrical power has a period of less than twenty (20) milliseconds;

receiving input from a user defining a power amplitude and a duty cycle; and

controlling the amplitude and duration of each of the one or more electrical cycles in response to the input from the user.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising controlling the power provided to the handpiece to have the one or more cycles of electrical power repeat at a rate in a range greater than 25 cycles per second and less than 2000 cycles per second.

19. The method of claim 17, further comprising controlling the power source such that there is an interval of no power being applied to the handpiece in between the one or more cycles of electrical power to ensure heat dissipation before a subsequent cycle of electrical power is activated.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising controlling the power source such that there is an interval in between the one or more cycles of electrical power where there is no power applied to the handpiece that drives the needle generally along its longitudinal axis.

21. The method of claim 17, further comprising controlling the power source such that there is an interval in between the one or more cycles of electrical power where electrical power applied to the handpiece that causes the needle to be driven generally along its longitudinal axis is minimized.

22. The method of claim 17, wherein the input for at least one of the power amplitude and the duty cycle comes from a foot pedal.
