Abstract

A fastener cartridge can comprise a cartridge body comprising a deck, fasteners removably stored within the cartridge body, and a layer covering the deck. The cartridge body can comprise a longitudinal slot which can be configured to receive a cutting member therein. The layer can comprise a first portion extending over the slot and a second portion located laterally with respect to the first portion and the slot. The first portion can comprise different properties than the second portion. For instance, the first portion can be thicker than the second portion. The first portion could also be stiffer than the second portion, for example. The first portion can rigidly support the tissue which is adjacent to a longitudinal cut extending through the tissue which is created by the cutting member. The second portion, positioned further away from the longitudinal cut in the tissue, can flexibly support such tissue.

Claims

1. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a first set of staple cavities; and

a second set of staple cavities, wherein said first set is different than said second set;

a plurality of staples removably stored within said cartridge body; and

an implantable layer assembly, comprising;

a first layer positioned over said first set of staple cavities; and

a second layer positioned over said second set of staple cavities.

2. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said first set of staple cavities at least partially overlaps said second set of staple cavities.

3. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said first set of staple cavities comprises a first amount of staple cavities, wherein said second set of staple cavities comprises a second amount of staple cavities, and wherein said first amount is different than said second amount.

4. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said first layer at least partially overlaps said second layer.

5. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said first set of staple cavities comprises at least one inner longitudinal row of staple cavities, and wherein said second set of staple cavities comprises at least one outer longitudinal row of staple cavities.

6. The staple cartridge of claim 5, wherein said second set of staple cavities further comprises at least one inner longitudinal row of staple cavities.

7. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said first set of staple cavities is not covered by said second layer.

8. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck;

a first set of staple cavities defined in said deck; and

a second set of staple cavities defined in said deck, wherein said first set is not identical to said second set;

a plurality of staples removably stored within said cartridge body; and

an implantable layer assembly positioned over said deck, wherein said implantable layer assembly comprises;

a first layer covering said first set of staple cavities; and

a second layer covering said second set of staple cavities.

9. The staple cartridge of claim 8, wherein said first set of staple cavities at least partially overlaps said second set of staple cavities.

10. The staple cartridge of claim 8, wherein said first set of staple cavities comprises a first amount of staple cavities, wherein said second set of staple cavities comprises a second amount of staple cavities, and wherein said first amount is different than said second amount.

11. The staple cartridge of claim 8, wherein said first layer at least partially overlaps said second layer.

12. The staple cartridge of claim 8, wherein said first set of staple cavities comprises at least one inner longitudinal row of staple cavities, and wherein said second set of staple cavities comprises at least one outer longitudinal row of staple cavities.

13. The staple cartridge of claim 12, wherein said second set of staple cavities further comprises at least one inner longitudinal row of staple cavities.

14. The staple cartridge of claim 8, wherein said first set of staple cavities is not covered by said second layer.

15. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a first set of staple cavities; and

a second set of staple cavities, wherein said first set is not congruent with said second set;

a plurality of staples removably stored within said cartridge body; and

an implantable layer assembly, comprising;

a first layer positioned over said first set of staple cavities; and

a second layer positioned over said second set of staple cavities.

16. The staple cartridge of claim 15, wherein said first set of staple cavities at least partially overlaps said second set of staple cavities.

17. The staple cartridge of claim 15, wherein said first set of staple cavities comprises a first amount of staple cavities, wherein said second set of staple cavities comprises a second amount of staple cavities, and wherein said first amount is different than said second amount.

18. The staple cartridge of claim 15, wherein said first layer at least partially overlaps said second layer.

19. The staple cartridge of claim 15, wherein said first set of staple cavities comprises at least one inner longitudinal row of staple cavities, and wherein said second set of staple cavities comprises at least one outer longitudinal row of staple cavities.

20. The staple cartridge of claim 19, wherein said second set of staple cavities further comprises at least one inner longitudinal row of staple cavities.

21. The staple cartridge of claim 15, wherein said first set of staple cavities is not covered by said second layer.

22. A fastener cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck;

a first set of fastener cavities;

a second set of fastener cavities; and

a longitudinal slot extending through said deck, wherein said longitudinal slot is configured to receive a cutting member, and wherein said first set of fastener cavities is positioned on a first side of said longitudinal slot and said second set of fastener cavities is positioned on a second side of said longitudinal slot;

a plurality of fasteners removably stored within said cartridge body; and

an implantable layer positioned above said deck, said implantable layer comprising;

a first portion comprising a first thickness, wherein said first portion is adjacent to said longitudinal slot; and

a second portion comprising a second thickness, wherein said second portion is positioned laterally with respect to said first portion, and wherein said first thickness is different than said second thickness.

23. The fastener cartridge of claim 22, wherein said first thickness is thicker than said second thickness.

24. The fastener cartridge of claim 22, wherein said first thickness is thinner than said second thickness.

25. The fastener cartridge of claim 22, wherein said first portion is configured to be incised by the cutting member.

26. A fastener cartridge, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising;

a deck;

a first set of fastener cavities;

a second set of fastener cavities; and

a longitudinal slot extending through said deck, wherein said longitudinal slot is configured to receive a cutting member, wherein said first set of fastener cavities is positioned on a first side of said longitudinal slot and said second set of fastener cavities is positioned on a second side of said longitudinal slot;

a plurality of fasteners removably stored within said cartridge body; and

an implantable layer positioned above said deck, said implantable layer comprising;

a first portion comprising a first stiffness, wherein said first portion is adjacent to said longitudinal slot; and

a second portion comprising a second stiffness, wherein said second portion is positioned laterally with respect to said first portion, and wherein said first stiffness is different than said second stiffness.

27. The fastener cartridge of claim 26, wherein said first stiffness is more rigid than said second stiffness.

28. The fastener cartridge of claim 26, wherein said first stiffness is less rigid than said second stiffness.

29. The fastener cartridge of claim 26, wherein said first portion is configured to be incised by the cutting member.
