Abstract

Backside recesses in a base member host components, such as sensors or circuits, to allow closer proximity and efficient use of the surface space and internal volume of the base member. Recesses may include covers, caps, filters and lenses, and may be in communication with circuits on the frontside of the base member, or with circuits on an active backside cap. An array of recessed components may a form complete, compact sensor system.

Claims

1. A sensor system comprising:

a laminate base comprising a plurality of laminated layers including at least a top layer having a top surface, a bottom layer having a bottom surface, and at least one internal layer laminated between the top layer and the bottom layer, the laminate base having a side surface extending between the top surface the bottom surface, the top surface, bottom surface and side surface comprising an external surface of the laminate base;

a first sensor in an internal layer, such that the first sensor is laminated between two of the plurality of laminated layers;

a second sensor in an internal layer, such that the second sensor is laminated between two of the plurality of laminated layers; and

an aperture extending through the external surface and from the external surface through at least a portion of the laminate base so as to expose the first sensor to an external environment.

2. The sensor system of claim 1, wherein:

the first sensor and the second are disposed in side by side configuration.

3. The sensor system of claim 1, wherein:

the first sensor and the second sensor are disposed in a stacked configuration.

4. The sensor system of claim 1, wherein the aperture extends through the top surface.

5. The sensor system of claim 4, further comprising a connector coupled to the aperture, the connector configured to transmit or transport an environmental medium from the external environment to the first sensor.

6. The sensor system of claim 1, wherein the aperture extends through the side surface.

7. The sensor system of claim 6, further comprising a connector coupled to the aperture through the side surface, the connector configured to transmit or transport an environmental medium from the external environment to the first sensor.

8. The sensor system of claim 1, wherein the first sensor and the second sensor are laminated into the same internal layer.

9. The sensor system of claim 1, wherein the at least one internal layer comprises a plurality of internal layers, and the first sensor and the second sensor are laminated into different ones of the plurality of internal layers.

10. The sensor system of claim 9, wherein the aperture extends through the top surface, and the first sensor is disposed between the aperture and the second sensor.

11. The sensor system of claim 1, further comprising circuitry coupled to the first sensor and the second sensor, the circuitry configured to coordinate the activity of the first sensor and the second sensor.

12. The sensor system of claim 1, wherein:

the aperture extends through the top surface; and

the system further comprises a filter in an internal layer, the filter disposed between the aperture and the first sensor, the filter configured to selectively permit environmental media to access the first sensor.

13. The sensor system of claim 12, wherein:

the filter comprises serrated edges; and

a laminate layer comprises opposing serrations configured to interlock with the serrated edges of the filter.

14. The sensor system of claim 1, wherein:

the aperture extends through the top surface; and

the system further comprises a cap in an internal layer, the cap disposed between the aperture and the first sensor, the cap configured to block environmental media from the first sensor such that the first sensor comprises a reference sensor that is isolated from the external environment.

15. The sensor system of claim 1, wherein:

the aperture extends through the top surface; and

the system further comprises a lens in an internal layer between the aperture and the first sensor, the lens configured to focus environmental media to the first sensor and optimize sensitivity of the sensing element.

16. The sensor system of claim 15, wherein:

the lens comprises serrated edges; and

a laminate layer comprises opposing serrations configured to interlock with the serrated edges of the lens.

17. The sensor system of claim 1, wherein:

at least one of the laminated layers comprises serrations; and

an adjacent one of the laminated layers comprises protrusions, the serrations and protrusions configured so as to interlock with one another.

18. The sensor system of claim 1, further comprising:

a first inductive coil,

a second conductive coil inductively coupled to the first inductive coil, and

a processor, wherein at least one of the first sensor and the second sensor is in electrical communication with the processor via the first inductive coil and the second inductive coil.

19. The sensor system of claim 1, further comprising:

an integrated circuit comprising circuitry configured to process the output of at least one of the first sensor and second sensor,

the laminate base physically mounted to, and electrically coupled to, the integrated circuit.

20. A sensor system comprising:

an integrated circuit comprising circuitry configured to process the output of a first sensor; and

a laminated base physically mounted to, and electrically coupled to, the integrated circuit, wherein the laminated base is selected from a plurality of laminated bases, wherein each of the plurality of laminated bases comprises;

a plurality of laminated layers comprising at least a top layer having a top surface, a bottom layer having a bottom surface, and at least one internal layer laminated between the top layer and the bottom layer,

the first sensor disposed in an internal layer, such that the first sensor is laminated between two of the plurality of laminated layers, and

a second sensor in an internal layer, such that the second sensor is laminated between two of the plurality of laminated layers; and

the plurality of laminated bases comprises a variety of design variations tailored to suit a corresponding variety of sensing applications, each design variation configured to mount to the integrated circuit.
