Abstract

Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for charging power using a resonant coupling. The apparatus includes a transmission power converter for converting Direct Current (DC) power to Alternating Current (AC) power, a controller for adjusting a Q factor of a transmission resonator by using a frequency of the converted AC power and a resonant frequency of the transmission resonator and controlling adaptive impedance matching, and a transmission resonator for wirelessly transmitting the converted AC power to a receiver through the adjusted Q factor and the controlled adaptive impedance matching, the transmission resonator having a coil installed in the transmitter.

Claims

1. An apparatus for transmitting wireless power of a transmitter using a resonant coupling, the apparatus comprising:

a transmission power converter which converts Direct Current (DC) power to Alternating Current (AC) power;

a controller which adjusts a Q factor of a transmission resonator by using a frequency of the converted AC power and a resonant frequency of the transmission resonator and controls adaptive impedance matching; and

a transmission resonator which wirelessly transmits the converted AC power to a receiver through the adjusted Q factor and the controlled adaptive impedance matching, the transmission resonator having a coil installed in the transmitter.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the coil is installed in an inner side surface of the transmitter or an upper surface of a charging pad of the transmitter.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the controller matches the frequency of the AC power with the resonant frequency of the transmission resonator by adjusting the Q factor and controlling the adaptive impedance matching

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the controller adjusts the Q factor by multiplying the resonant frequency of the transmission resonator by inductance and then dividing a result by a radiation loss.

6. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the controller adjusts the Q factor by dividing the resonant frequency of the transmission resonator by a frequency of a point which is 3 dB lower than a maximum value of the converted AC power.

The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the controller controls inductance and capacitance of the transmission resonator and controls the adaptive impedance matching by matching the resonance frequency changed according to a distance and an arrangement between the transmission resonator of the transmitter and the reception resonator of the receiver with the frequency of the AC power.

9. A method of transmitting wireless power of a transmitter using a resonant coupling, the method comprising:

converting Direct Current (DC) power to Alternating Current (AC) power;

adjusting a Q factor of a transmission resonator by using a frequency of the converted AC power and a resonant frequency of the transmission resonator and controlling adaptive impedance matching; and

wirelessly transmitting the converted AC power to a receiver through the adjusted Q factor and the controlled adaptive impedance matching,

wherein a coil is installed in the transmitter.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein adjusting the Q factor and controlling the adaptive impedance matching comprises matching the frequency of the AC power with the resonant frequency of the transmission resonator by adjusting the Q factor and controlling the adaptive impedance matching.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein adjusting the Q factor and controlling the adaptive impedance matching further comprises adjusting the Q factor by multiplying the resonant frequency of the transmission resonator by inductance and then dividing a result by a radiation loss.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein adjusting the Q factor and controlling the adaptive impedance matching further comprises adjusting the Q factor by dividing the resonant frequency of the transmission resonator by a frequency of a point which is 3 dB lower than a maximum value of the converted AC power.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein adjusting the Q factor and controlling the adaptive impedance matching further comprises controlling inductance and capacitance of the transmission resonator and controlling the adaptive impedance matching by matching the resonance frequency changed according to a distance and an arrangement between the transmission resonator of the transmitter and the reception resonator of the receiver with the frequency of the AC power.

14. A system for charging wireless power using a resonant coupling, the system comprising:

a transmitter which converts Direct Current (DC) power to Alternating Current (AC) power, matches a frequency of the converted AC power with a resonant frequency of a transmission resonator, and transmits the converted AC power to a receiver, a coil being installed in the transmitter; and

a receiver which converts the received AC power to DC power to charge a battery.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the coil is installed in an inner side surface of the transmitter or an upper surface of a charging pad of the transmitter.

The system of claim 14, wherein the transmitter adjusts a Q factor of the transmission resonator and controls adaptive impedance matching by using the frequency of the converted AC power and the resonant frequency of the transmission resonator, and wirelessly transmits the converted AC power to the receiver through the adjusted Q factor and the controlled adaptive impedance matching.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the Q factor is adjusted by multiplying the resonant frequency of the transmission resonator by inductance and then dividing a result by a radiation loss.

18. The system of claim 16, wherein the Q factor is adjusted by dividing the resonant frequency of the transmission resonator by a frequency of a point which is 3 dB lower than a maximum value of the converted AC power.

19. A wireless power transmitter for transmitting wireless power to one or more wireless power receivers, the wireless power transmitter comprising:

a power provider which provides Direct Current (DC) wireless power having a preset voltage or current value;

a power converter which converts the wireless power received from the power provider to Alternating Current (AC) power for a resonance; and

a resonator which transmits the converted power to the one or more wireless power receivers by using the resonance and transmits the wireless power with a substantially equal efficiency irrespective of a change in arrangement positions, arrangement directions, and a number of the one or more wireless power receivers, due to a loose coupling with each of the one or more wireless power receivers.

20. The wireless power transmitter of claim 19, wherein the resonator is loosely coupled with each of the one or more wireless power receivers due to the resonator having a quality factor of at least 100.

21. The wireless power transmitter of claim 19, wherein the resonator is coupled with each of the one or more wireless power receivers with a coupling efficiency lower than 0.3.

22. The wireless power transmitter of claim 19, further comprising:

a wireless power transmission platform which receives the power provider, the power converter, and the resonator; and

a supporter which mechanically supports the one or more wireless power receivers, the supporter being connected to one surface of the wireless power transmission platform.

23. The wireless power transmitter of claim 22, wherein the resonator transmits the wireless power with a substantially equal efficiency irrespective of a change in positions of the one or more wireless power receivers in a direction in which the supporter extends.

24. The wireless power transmitter of claim 23, wherein the resonator transmits the wireless power with a substantially equal efficiency even though directions of the one or more wireless power receivers are changed based on the direction in which the supporter extends.

25. The wireless power transmitter of claim 19, wherein the resonator transmits the wireless power with a substantially equal efficiency regardless of a power amount of the wireless power received by the one or more wireless power receivers.

26. The wireless power transmitter of claim 19, further comprising:

a controller which monitors impedance at one point of the wireless power transmitter; and

an impedance matching circuit unit which performs impedance matching based on a control of the controller such that the impedance at the one point remains a minimum.

27. The wireless power transmitter of claim 26, wherein the impedance matching circuit unit comprises one or more of at least one capacitot and at least one coil.

28. The wireless power transmitter of claim 19, wherein the resonator comprises a capacitor and a coil and forms a loose coupling due to Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) of each of the capacitor and the coil being lower than a preset value.

29. The wireless power transmitter of claim 19, wherein the resonator reduces a radiation loss by resonating in an odd normal mode frequency and forming a loose coupling.

30. A wireless power receiver for receiving wireless power from a wireless power transmitter comprising a power transmission resonator, the wireless power receiver comprising:

a resonator which resonates with the power transmission resonator to receive the wireless power;

a rectifier which rectifies the received wireless power from an Alternating Current (AC) type waveform to a Direct Current (DC) type waveform;

a regulator which regulates the rectified wireless power to be output with a constant efficiency; and

a battery which stores the regulated wireless power,

wherein the resonator is loosely coupled with the power transmission resonator and the resonator receives the wireless power with a substantially equal efficiency irrespective of a change in one or more of an arrangement position and an arrangement direction of the wireless power receiver.

31. The wireless power receiver of claim 30, wherein the resonator is loosely coupled with the power transmission resonator due to the resonator having a quality factor of at least 50.

32. The wireless power receiver of claim 30, wherein the resonator is coupled with the power transmission resonator with a coupling efficiency lower than 0.3.

33. The wireless power receiver of claim 30, wherein the resonator comprises a capacitor and a coil and forms a loose coupling due to an Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) of each of the capacitor and the coil being lower than a preset value.

34. The wireless power receiver of claim 33, wherein the resonator reduces a radiation loss by resonating in an odd normal mode frequency and forms a loose coupling.
