Abstract

We have disclosed apparatuses, methods, and computer program products to monitor an individual'"'"'s performance during a physical activity with a portable performance monitoring device. The methods may include obtaining position points using a satellite positioning system receiver of the monitoring device during a physical activity, determining performance information based on the position points using a processor of the monitoring device during a physical activity, conveying at least some of the performance information to the individual by an output device of the monitoring device during a physical activity, and wirelessly transmitting at least some of the performance information to a remote device using a monitoring device.

Claims

1. A method of monitoring an individual'"'"'s performance during a physical activity with a portable performance monitoring device, the method comprising:

obtaining position points using a satellite positioning system receiver of the portable performance monitoring device during the physical activity;

determining performance information for the individual based on the position points using a processor of the portable performance monitoring device during the physical activity;

conveying at least some of the performance information to the individual using an output device of the portable performance monitoring device during the physical activity; and

transmitting at least some of the performance information to a remotely located device using a wireless wide-area network transceiver of the portable performance monitoring device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the performance information comprises speed or pace information.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

obtaining acceleration data during the physical activity,

wherein the performance information is further determined by the processor of the portable performance monitoring device based on the acceleration data.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the acceleration data is obtained using an accelerometer module of the portable performance monitoring device.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the acceleration data is obtained using a wireless personal-area network transceiver of the portable performance monitoring device.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the output device comprises a display of the portable performance monitoring device, and wherein the at least some of the performance information is conveyed to the individual visually via the display.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

conveying the individual'"'"'s present location on a map to the individual via the display during the physical activity.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the output device comprises an audio output, and wherein the at least some of the performance information is conveyed to the individual audibly via the audio output.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the audio output comprises a wireless personal-area network transceiver, and wherein the conveying further comprises transmitting the at least some of the performance information to a pair of wireless headphones worn by the individual.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

transmitting music to the pair of wireless headphones during the physical activity.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

storing the obtained position points, the performance information associated with the individual position points, and the times at which the position points were obtained in association with one another in a memory of the portable performance monitoring device.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a personal annotation from the individual and storing the personal annotation in association with one or more of the position points in a memory of the portable performance monitoring device.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the personal annotation is selected from a number of predefined annotations.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving an incoming communication via the wireless wide-area network transceiver during the physical activity.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

notifying the individual of the incoming communication via the output device during the physical activity.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the incoming communication is a telephone call or an electronic message.

17. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer readable medium having computer program logic recorded thereon that, when executed by a processor of a portable performance monitoring device, is capable of causing the portable performance monitoring device to:

obtain position points using a satellite positioning system receiver of the portable performance monitoring device during an individual'"'"'s physical activity;

determine performance information for the individual based on the position points during the physical activity;

convey at least some of the performance information to the individual using an output device of the portable performance monitoring device during the physical activity; and

transmit at least some of the performance information to a remotely located device using a wireless wide-area network transceiver of the portable performance monitoring device.

18. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein the computer program logic, when executed by the processor, is capable of causing the portable performance monitoring device to:

obtain acceleration data during the physical activity,

wherein the performance information is further determined based on the acceleration data.

19. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein the computer program logic, when executed by the processor, is capable of causing the portable performance monitoring device to:

convey the individual'"'"'s present location on a map to the individual via the output device during the physical activity.

20. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein the computer program logic, when executed by the processor, is capable of causing the portable performance monitoring device to:

store the obtained position points, the performance information associated with the individual position points, and the times at which the position points were obtained in association with one another in a memory of the portable performance monitoring device.

21. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein the computer program logic, when executed by the processor, is capable of causing the portable performance monitoring device to:

receive a personal annotation from the individual and storing the personal annotation in association with one or more of the position points in a memory of the portable performance monitoring device.

22. The computer program product of claim 17, wherein the computer program logic, when executed by the processor, is capable of causing the portable performance monitoring device to:

receive an incoming communication via the wireless wide-area network transceiver during the physical activity.

23. A portable performance monitoring device for monitoring an individual'"'"'s performance during a physical activity, the portable performance monitoring device comprising:

a satellite positioning system receiver adapted to obtain position points during the physical activity;

a processor adapted to determine performance information for the individual based on the position points, during the physical activity;

an output device adapted to convey at least some of the performance information to the individual during the physical activity; and

a wireless wide-area network transceiver adapted to transmit at least some of the performance information to a remotely located device during the physical activity.

24. The portable performance monitoring device of claim 23, wherein the satellite positioning system receiver comprises a Global Positioning System-compatible receiver.

25. The portable performance monitoring device of claim 23, further comprising:

an accelerometer module adapted to obtain acceleration data during the physical activity,

wherein the processor is adapted to determine the performance information further based on the acceleration data.

26. The portable performance monitoring device of claim 23, wherein the output device comprises a visual display.

27. The portable performance monitoring device of claim 23, wherein the output device comprises an audio output.

28. The portable performance monitoring device of claim 23, wherein the wireless wide-area network transceiver comprises a telecommunications network-compatible transceiver.

29. The portable performance monitoring device of claim 23, further comprising:

a mount for releasably securing the portable performance monitoring device to the individual'"'"'s body during the physical activity.

30. The portable performance monitoring device of claim 28, further comprising:

a wireless personal-area network transceiver adapted to communicate with another device that is secured to the individual'"'"'s body during the physical activity.
