Abstract

Apparatus useful for obtaining and displaying information. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a network interface, display device, and speech recognition apparatus configured to receive user speech input and enable performance of various tasks via a remote entity, such as obtaining desired information relating to directions, sports, finance, weather, or any number of other topics. The downloaded may also, in one variant, be transmitted to a personal user device, such as via a data interface.

Claims

41. Computerized information and display apparatus, comprising:

a network interface;

processing apparatus in data communication with the network interface;

a display device;

a data interface in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to receive inputs from a user'"'"'s portable device; and

a storage apparatus comprising at least one computer program, said at least one program being configured to, when executed;

obtain digitized speech generated based on speech received from the user, the digitized speech relating to a desired action which the user wishes to perform; and

cause, based at least in part on the digitized speech, access of a remote network entity to cause performance of the desired action.

42. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the computerized information apparatus is further configured to receive at least a portion of information obtained via the access of the remote network entity via the network interface for display on the display device.

43. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the computerized information apparatus is further configured to receive at least a portion of information obtained via the access of the remote network entity via the network interface for provision to the portable device via the data interface.

44. The apparatus of claim 43, wherein the desired action comprises obtaining information relating to a particular topical area.

45. The apparatus of claim 44, wherein the topical area is selected from the groups consisting of (i) directions to a particular location or destination;

and (ii) the location of a nearby establishment or point of interest.

46. The apparatus of claim 44, wherein the information provided to the portable device is configured according to a user-specific profile.

47. The apparatus of claim 44, wherein the information provided to the portable device is provided in response to a request from an application program running on the portable device.

48. The apparatus of claim 43, wherein the display device comprises a touch-screen display and input device having a plurality of soft function keys rendered thereon, the soft function keys being configured to generate one or more inputs relating to the information to be provided to the portable device.

49. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the network interface comprises a wireless interface compliant with an IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard.

50. The apparatus of claim 41, further comprising video data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable video data to be generated and displayed on the display device.

51. The apparatus of claim 50, wherein the video data apparatus comprises a charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor.

52. The apparatus of claim 50, wherein the video data is generated by one or more cameras positioned on a premises on which the computerized information and display apparatus is disposed, so as to enable monitoring of one or more portions of the premises for security purposes.

53. The apparatus of claim 41, further comprising video data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable video data to be generated and sent to a remote location for viewing thereat.

54. The apparatus of claim 53, wherein the video data is generated by one or more cameras positioned on a premises on which the computerized information and display apparatus is disposed, so as to enable monitoring of one or more portions of the premises for security purposes.

55. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the display device comprises a thin-film transistor (TFT)-based display device.

56. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the apparatus is further configured to display one or more hyperlinks relating to a particular website or universal resource locator (URL) that are selectable by the user.

57. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the apparatus comprises one of a plurality of similar apparatus each disposed in a different location yet substantially within a common premises, yet in data communication with one another.

58. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the information and display apparatus further comprises a function whereby a user can select a remote entity to contact via at least an audio subsystem of the computerized information and display apparatus using a pre-designated call function key.

59. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the information and display apparatus further comprises software configured for conversion of digital data to audible speech signals audible by the user.

60. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the information and display apparatus further comprises a DOCSIS-compliant cable modem for communication with a network.

61. Computerized information and display apparatus, comprising:

a wireless network interface compliant with an IEEE 802.11 standard and configured to interface with a wireless LAN (WLAN);

processing apparatus in data communication with the wireless network interface;

a display device;

a data interface in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to receive inputs from a computerized portable device disposed proximate thereto;

visual data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable visual data generated by the computerized information and display apparatus to be transmitted to a remote entity using at least the wireless network interface; and

a storage apparatus comprising at least one computer program, said at least one program being configured to, when executed;

obtain digitized speech signals generated based on speech received from the user, the speech relating to a desired action which the user wishes to perform; and

cause, based at least in part on the digitized speech signals, access of a remote network entity to cause performance of the desired action.

62. The apparatus of claim 61, wherein the computerized information apparatus is further configured to receive at least a portion of information obtained via the access of the remote network entity via the network interface for display on the display device.

The apparatus of claim 61, wherein the computerized information apparatus is further configured to receive at least a portion of information obtained via the access of the remote network entity via the network interface and provide at least a portion of the received information to the portable device via the data interface.

64. The apparatus of claim 63, wherein the desired action comprises obtaining information relating to a particular topical area.

65. The apparatus of claim 64, wherein the topical area is selected from the groups consisting of (i) directions to a particular location or destination;

and (ii) the location of a nearby establishment or point of interest.

66. The apparatus of claim 64, wherein the information provided to the portable device is configured according to a user-specific profile.

67. The apparatus of claim 61, wherein the display device comprises a touch-screen display and input device having a plurality of soft function keys rendered thereon, the soft function keys being configured to generate one or more inputs relating to the information to be provided to the portable device.

68. The apparatus of claim 61, wherein the information and display apparatus is further configured to enable the video data to be displayed on the display device.

69. The apparatus of claim 68, wherein the video data apparatus comprises a charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor.

70. The apparatus of claim 68, wherein the video data is generated by one or more cameras positioned on a premises on which the computerized information and display apparatus is disposed, so as to enable monitoring of one or more portions of the premises for security purposes.

71. The apparatus of claim 61, wherein the display device comprises a thin-film transistor (TFT)-based display device.

72. The apparatus of claim 61, wherein the apparatus is further configured to display one or more hyperlinks relating to a particular website or universal resource locator (URL) that are selectable by the user.

73. The apparatus of claim 61, wherein the apparatus comprises one of a plurality of similar apparatus each disposed in a different location yet substantially within a common premises, yet in data communication with one another.

74. The apparatus of claim 61, wherein the information and display apparatus further comprises a function whereby a user can select a remote entity to contact via at least an audio subsystem of the computerized information and display apparatus using a pre-designated call function key.

75. The apparatus of claim 61, wherein the information and display apparatus further comprises software configured for conversion of digital data to audible speech signals audible by the user.

76. The apparatus of claim 61, wherein the information and display apparatus further comprises a DOCSIS-compliant cable modem for communication with a network.

77. Computerized information and display apparatus, comprising:

a wireless network interface;

processing apparatus in data communication with the wireless network interface;

a display device;

a data interface in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to communicate data with a computerized portable user device placed in communication with the computerized information and display apparatus by a user thereof; and

a storage apparatus comprising at least one computer program, said at least one program being configured to, when executed;

generate digitized speech based on speech received from the user, the digitized speech relating to a desired action which the user wishes to perform; and

cause, based at least in part on the digitized speech, access of a remote entity via the network interface and an internet to cause performance of the desired action;

wherein the computerized information apparatus is further configured to receive at least a portion of information obtained via the access of the remote network entity via the network interface for provision to the portable user device via the data interface.

78. The apparatus of claim 77, wherein the computerized information apparatus is further configured to receive at least a portion of information obtained via the access of the remote network entity via the network interface for display on the display device.

The apparatus of claim 78, wherein the apparatus is further configured to display on the display device one or more hyperlinks relating to a particular website or universal resource locator (URL) that are selectable by the user, the one or more hyperlinks being displayed based at least in part on the digitized speech.

80. The apparatus of claim 77, wherein the information provided to the portable device is provided in response to a request from an application program running on the portable device.

81. The apparatus of claim 77, wherein the information provided to the portable device is configured according to a user-specific profile.

The apparatus of claim 77, wherein the display device comprises a touch-screen display and input device having a plurality of soft function keys rendered thereon, the soft function keys being configured to generate one or more inputs relating to the information to be provided to the portable device.

83. The apparatus of claim 77, wherein the network interface comprises a wireless interface compliant with an IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard.

84. The apparatus of claim 77, further comprising video data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable video data to be generated and displayed on the display device.

85. The apparatus of claim 84, wherein the video data apparatus comprises a charge-coupled device (CCD) sensor.

86. The apparatus of claim 84, wherein the video data is generated by one or more cameras positioned on a premises on which the computerized information and display apparatus is disposed, so as to enable monitoring of one or more portions of the premises for security purposes.

87. The apparatus of claim 86, wherein the video data is generated by one or more cameras positioned on a premises on which the computerized information and display apparatus is disposed, so as to enable monitoring of one or more portions of the premises for security purposes.

88. The apparatus of claim 77, wherein the display device comprises a thin-film transistor (TFT)-based display device.

The apparatus of claim 77, wherein the apparatus is further configured to display on the display device one or more hyperlinks relating to a particular website or universal resource locator (URL) that are selectable by the user, the one or more hyperlinks being displayed based at least in part on the desired action.

90. The apparatus of claim 77, wherein the apparatus comprises one of a plurality of similar apparatus each disposed in a different location yet substantially within a common premises, yet in data communication with one another.

91. The apparatus of claim 77, wherein the information and display apparatus further comprises a function whereby a user can select a remote entity to contact via at least an audio subsystem of the computerized information and display apparatus using a pre-designated call function key.

92. The apparatus of claim 77, wherein the information and display apparatus further comprises software configured for conversion of digital data to audible speech signals audible by the user.

93. The apparatus of claim 77, wherein the computerized portable user device placed in communication with the computerized information and display apparatus by a user thereof communicates via an ad hoc communication link only temporarily established by the user.

86-1. The apparatus of claim 77, further comprising video data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable video data to be generated and sent to a remote location for viewing thereat while the user is using the information and display apparatus.

94. Computerized information and display apparatus, comprising:

a wireless network interface compliant with an IEEE 802.11 standard and configured to interface with a wireless LAN (WLAN);

processing apparatus in data communication with the wireless network interface;

a display device;

a data interface in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to receive inputs from a computerized portable device disposed proximate thereto;

visual data apparatus in data communication with the processing apparatus and configured to enable visual data generated by the computerized information and display apparatus to be transmitted to a remote entity using at least the wireless network interface; and

a storage apparatus comprising at least one computer program, said at least one program being configured to, when executed;

obtain digitized speech signals generated based on speech received from the user, the speech relating to a desired action which the user wishes to perform; and

cause, based at least in part on the digitized speech signals, access of a remote network entity to cause performance of the desired action;

wherein the computerized information apparatus is further configured to receive at least a portion of information obtained via the access of the remote network entity via the network interface for display on the display device; and

wherein the apparatus is further configured to display on the display device one or more hyperlinks relating to a particular website or universal resource locator (URL) that are selectable by the user, the one or more hyperlinks being displayed based at least in part on the digitized speech.

95. The apparatus of claim 94, further comprising a touch-screen display and input device having a plurality of soft function keys rendered thereon.
