Abstract

Disclosed are a wireless power receiver and a method of managing the same. The wireless power receiver to wirelessly receive power from a wireless power transmitter and transmit the power to a load includes a receiving unit to receive AC power from the wireless power transmitter that receives power from a power supply device, a rectifying unit to rectify the received AC power to DC power, and a power managing unit to manage the power transmitted to the load based on the rectified DC power.

Claims

1. A wireless power receiver to wirelessly receive power from a wireless power transmitter and transmit the power to a load, the wireless power receiver comprising:

a receiving unit to receive AC power from the wireless power transmitter that receives power from a power supply device;

a rectifying unit to rectify the received AC power to DC power; and

a power managing unit to manage the power transmitted to the load based on the rectified DC power.

2. The wireless power receiver of claim 1, wherein the power managing unit generates a control signal to adjust the power transmitted to the load according to the rectified DC power, and transmits the control signal to the power supply device.

The wireless power receiver of claim 2, wherein the power managing unit transmits a power increase signal to the power supply device to increase the power transmitted to the load if the rectified DC power is less than a first threshold value, and the first threshold value is a minimum power required to normally operate the load.

The wireless power receiver of claim 2, wherein the power managing unit transmits a power decrease signal to the power supply device to decrease the power transmitted to the load if the rectified DC power is equal to or greater than a first threshold value, and the first threshold value is a minimum power required to normally operate the load.

The wireless power receiver of claim 3, wherein the power managing unit absorbs the DC power corresponding to a second threshold value or more if the DC power is equal to or greater than the second threshold value, and the second threshold value is greater than the first threshold value and corresponds to a power to inhibit the load from being damaged.

6. The wireless power receiver of claim 5, wherein the power managing unit absorbs the DC power corresponding to the second threshold value or more through a Zener diode.

7. The wireless power receiver of claim 1, wherein the power managing unit includes a switch to maintain or shut off the power transmitted to the load depending on whether the rectified DC power is a threshold value or more, and the threshold value is a power to inhibit the load from being damaged.

8. The wireless power receiver of claim 7, wherein the power managing unit shorts the switch such that the power transmitted to the load is maintained if the rectified DC power is less than the threshold value.

9. The wireless power receiver of claim 7, wherein the power managing unit opens the switch such that the power transmitted to the load is shut off if the rectified DC power is equal to or greater than the threshold value.

The wireless power receiver of claim 7, wherein the power managing unit further includes a comparator circuit including an amplifier and a plurality of resistors, and wherein the comparator circuit determines if the rectified DC power is equal to or greater than the threshold value to control an operation of the switch.

11. The wireless power receiver of claim 1, wherein the receiving unit includes a reception inductance coil to receive the AC power from the wireless power transmitter using an electromagnetic induction.

The wireless power receiver of claim 1, wherein the receiving unit includes a reception resonant coil to receive the AC power from the wireless power transmitter using a resonance and a reception induction coil to receive the power, which is received in the reception resonant coil, using an electromagnetic induction.

13. The wireless power receiver of claim 1, wherein the rectifying unit includes a rectifier to rectify the received AC power to the DC power;

and a smoothing circuit to remove a ripple component from the converted DC power, and wherein the rectifier includes a bridge diode.

The wireless power receiver of claim 4, wherein the power managing unit absorbs the DC power corresponding to a second threshold value or more if the DC power is equal to or greater than the second threshold value, and the second threshold value is greater than the first threshold value and corresponds to a power to inhibit the load from being damaged.

22. The wireless power receiver of claim 21, wherein the power managing unit absorbs the DC power corresponding to the second threshold value or more through a Zener diode.

14. A method of managing power in a wireless power receiver to wirelessly receive power from a wireless power transmitter and transmit the power to a load, the method comprising:

receiving AC power from the wireless power transmitter that receives power from a power supply device;

rectifying the AC power to DC power; and

managing power transmitted to the load based on the rectified DC power.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the managing of the power transmitted to the load includes transmitting a control signal to the power supply device to adjust the power transmitted to the load according to the rectified DC power.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the transmitting of the control signal includes transmitting a power increase signal to the power supply device to increase the power transmitted to the load if the rectified DC power is less than a first threshold value, and wherein the first threshold value is a minimum power required to normally operate the load.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the transmitting of the control signal includes transmitting a power decrease signal to the power supply device to decrease the power transmitted to the load if the rectified DC power is equal to or greater than a first threshold value, and wherein the first threshold value is a minimum power required to normally operate the load.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the managing of the power transmitted to the load includes absorbing DC power corresponding to a second threshold value or more if the rectified DC power is equal to or greater than the second threshold value, and

wherein the second threshold value is greater than the first threshold value and is a power value to inhibit the load from being damaged.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein the managing of the power transmitted to the load includes maintaining the power transmitted to the load through a switch if the rectified DC power is less than a threshold value, and wherein the threshold value is a power value to inhibit the load from being damaged.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein the managing of the power transmitted to the load includes maintaining the power transmitted to the load through a switch if the rectified DC power is equal to or more than a threshold value, and wherein the threshold value is a power value to inhibit the load from being damaged.

23. The method of claim 17, wherein the managing of the power transmitted to the load includes absorbing DC power corresponding to a second threshold value or more if the rectified DC power is equal to or greater than the second threshold value, and

wherein the second threshold value is greater than the first threshold value and is a power value to inhibit the load from being damaged.
