Abstract

Techniques for enabling user search of content stored in a file archive include providing a search interface comprising a search rules portion and an action rules portion, receiving a file archive search criterion comprising at least one search rule, and searching the file archive using the search criterion. The techniques also include generating a set of files filtered using the search criterion and performing an action specified in the action rules portion on a file included in the set of files.

Claims

1. A method of indexing contents of a file being archived, comprising:

receiving a command to begin multi-dimensional indexing of a file;

generating a file attribute index for the file being indexed,

wherein the file attribute index includes extrinsic information about the file being indexed and is independent of contents of the file being indexed;

creating a content index for the file based on text or image content within the file;

archiving the file after creating the content index,

wherein the file archiving operation includes dividing the file into multiple independently accessible portions; and

storing the file attribute index at a first location, the content index at a second location and the archived file at a third location.

2. The method of claim 1, further including:

generating a list of pointers identifying the first location, the second location and the third location.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the content index creation operation includes:

extracting content information in an image using a pattern recognition mechanism.

4. The method of claim 1, further including:

generating a linked list of pointers indicating locations of the independently accessible portions.

5. An apparatus for indexing contents of a file being archived, comprising:

a file attribute index module that generates a file attribute index for the file being archived, and stores the generated index on a user device where the file is located;

a content index module that creates a content index for the file identifying attributes of content within the file being archived and stores the content index on an administrator'"'"'s device different from the user device; and

a file archive module that facilitates archiving the file to a secondary storage system after creating the content index.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, further including:

a pointer list generation mechanism that generates a list of pointers identifying the user device, the administrator'"'"'s device and the secondary storage system.

7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the content index module includes:

a pattern recognition module that extracts content information in an image using a pattern recognition mechanism.

8. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the file archive module includes:

a file segmenting module that divides the file into multiple independently accessible portions.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, further including:

a linked list generation module that generates a linked list of pointers indicating locations of the independently accessible portions.

10. A method of enabling a user search of content stored in a file archive, comprising:

providing a search interface comprising a search rules portion and an action rules portion;

receiving a file archive search criterion comprising at least one search rule;

searching the file archive using the search criterion and indexing information about files in the file archive;

generating a set of files filtered using the search criterion;

performing an action specified in the action rules portion on a file included in the set of files.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

mounting the set of files to a drive accessible by the user using a network file system (NFS) interface.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein the action includes at least one of a play action, a preview action, a list action and an open action.

13. An apparatus for enabling a user search of content stored in a file archive, comprising:

means for providing a search interface comprising a search rules portion and an action rules portion;

means for receiving a file archive search criterion comprising at least one search rule;

means for searching the file archive using the search criterion using indexing information about files in the file archive;

means for generating a set of files filtered using the search criterion;

means for performing an action specified in the action rules portion on a file included in the set of files.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, further comprising:

means for mounting the set of files to a drive accessible by the user using a network file system (NFS) interface.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the action includes at least one of a play action, a preview action, a list action and an open action.

16. A computer program product comprising a computer-readable storage medium having code stored thereon, the code, when executed by a processor, causing the processor to implement a method of enabling a user search of content stored in a file archive, the method comprising:

providing a search interface comprising a search rules portion and an action rules portion;

receiving a file archive search criterion comprising at least one search rule;

searching the file archive using the search criterion using indexing information about files in the file archive;

generating a set of files filtered using the search criterion;

performing an action specified in the action rules portion on a file included in the set of files.

17. The computer program product of claim 16 wherein the method further comprises:

mounting the set of files to a drive accessible by the user using a network file system (NFS) interface.

18. The computer program product of claim 16 wherein the action includes at least one of a play action, a preview action, a list action and an open action.
