Abstract

A system for safe storage and efficient utilization of a variety of fuel selections that range in composition and phase from cryogenic mixtures of solids and liquids to elevated temperature gases is provided for unique applications with various types of heat engines and fuel cells including hybridized combinations.

Claims

1. A system for integrating fuel injection and ignition means in which occasionally intermittent flow to provide said fuel injection is controlled by a valve means that is electrically separated by insulation means from an actuation means for said valve means and in which said actuation means applies force to said valve means by an electrically insulating means that consists of an electrically insulating cable or rod means in which said cable or rod means also provides detection and or communication of detected information from a combustion chamber means to a control means for operation of said system.

2. The system of claim 1 in which said control valve means is occasionally electrically charged to provide plasma discharge means to ignite occasionally injected fuel allowed to pass by said control valve means.

3. A system for integrating fuel injection and ignition means in which occasionally intermittent flow to provide said fuel injection is controlled by a valve means that is electrically separated by insulation means from an actuation means for said valve means and in which said actuation means applies force to said valve means by an electrically insulating means, the system further comprising a controller operably coupled to the actuation means, wherein the electrically insulating means optically transmits combustion data from the combustion chamber to the controller, and wherein the controller adaptively directs the movement of the valve via the actuation means in response to the combustion data.

4. An injector system for integrating fuel injection and ignition, the system comprising:

an injector body having a first end portion spaced apart from a second end portion, wherein the second end portion is configured to be positioned at an interface with a combustion chamber;

a driver movably positioned in the first end portion;

a valve movably positioned in the second end portion proximate to the interface;

an electrically insulated actuator extending between the driver and the valve, wherein the actuator moves the valve to dispense fuel into the combustion chamber in response to movement of the driver;

one or more ignition features at the second end portion for igniting the fuel in the combustion chamber; and

a controller operably coupled to the injector body, wherein the controller receives combustion chamber data from the combustion chamber via the actuator and is configured to adaptively actuate the driver in response to the combustion chamber data.

5. The system of claim 4, further comprising:

a conductor extending through at least a section of the second end portion, wherein the conductor is configured to be coupled to a ignition energy source and to create an ignition event with the one or more ignition features; and

wherein the actuator is electrically insulated from the conductor.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein the actuator is coaxially positioned within the conductor.

7. An injector system for integrating fuel injection and ignition, the system comprising:

an injector body having a first end portion spaced apart from a second end portion, wherein the second end portion is configured to be positioned at an interface with a combustion chamber;

a driver movably positioned in the first end portion;

a valve movably positioned in the second end portion proximate to the interface;

an electrically insulated actuator extending between the driver and the valve, wherein the actuator moves the valve to dispense fuel into the combustion chamber in response to movement of the driver, wherein the actuator comprises one or more dielectrically insulated fiber optic cables; and

one or more ignition features at the second end portion for igniting the fuel in the combustion chamber.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the actuator includes an optical element for transmitting combustion chamber data from the combustion chamber.

9. An injector system for integrating fuel injection and ignition, the system comprising:

an injector body having a first end portion spaced apart from a second end portion, wherein the second end portion is configured to be positioned at an interface with a combustion chamber;

a driver movably positioned in the first end portion;

a valve movably positioned in the second end portion proximate to the interface, wherein the valve is a first valve and the system further comprises a second valve positioned between the first valve and the combustion chamber;

the first valve opens by moving along a longitudinal direction of the injector body towards the first end portion; and

the second valve opens by expanding radially outwardly within the injector body;

an electrically insulated actuator extending between the driver and the valve, wherein the actuator moves the valve to dispense fuel into the combustion chamber in response to movement of the driver; and

one or more ignition features at the second end portion for igniting the fuel in the combustion chamber.

10. An injector system for integrating fuel injection and ignition, the system comprising:

an injector body having a first end portion spaced apart from a second end portion, wherein the second end portion is configured to be positioned at an interface with a combustion chamber;

a driver movably positioned in the first end portion;

a valve movably positioned in the second end portion proximate to the interface;

an electrically insulated actuator extending between the driver and the valve, wherein the actuator moves the valve to dispense fuel into the combustion chamber in response to movement of the driver;

one or more ignition features at the second end portion for igniting the fuel in the combustion chamber; and

a stop coupled to the actuator, and wherein the driver contacts the stop to move the valve via the actuator to dispense the fuel.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein the driver moves a distance to gain momentum before striking the stop.

12. An injector system for integrating fuel injection and ignition, the system comprising:

an injector body having a first end portion spaced apart from a second end portion, wherein the second end portion is configured to be positioned at an interface with a combustion chamber;

a driver movably positioned in the first end portion;

a first valve movably positioned in the second end portion proximate to the interface;

a second valve positioned between the combustion chamber and the first valve, and wherein the second valve is biased towards a closed position and movable from the closed position to an open position in response to fuel flowing past the first valve;

an electrically insulated actuator extending between the driver and the valve, wherein the actuator moves the valve to dispense fuel into the combustion chamber in response to movement of the driver; and

one or more ignition features at the second end portion for igniting the fuel in the combustion chamber.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein the second valve is a ferromagnetic valve that is magnetically biased towards the closed position.

14. The system of claim 12 wherein at least a portion of the second valve is made from a transparent material to allow combustion chamber data to be optically transmitted via the actuator.

15. The system of claim 12 wherein the driver biases the valve towards a closed position via the actuator when the driver is in a non-actuated condition.

16. The system of claim 12, further comprising a solenoid winding in the first end portion, and wherein the driver is an electromagnetic driver that is selectively actuated in response to a force generated in the solenoid winding.

17. An injector system for integrating fuel injection and ignition, the system comprising:

an injector body including—

a base configured to receive fuel into the injector body; and

a nozzle opposite the base and configured to introduce the fuel into a combustion chamber, wherein an end portion of the nozzle is configured to be positioned at an interface with the combustion chamber;

a valve carried by the nozzle adjacent to the interface with the combustion chamber;

means for adaptively controlling the valve in response to one or more combustion chamber parameters to introduce the fuel into the combustion chamber, wherein the means for adaptively controlling the valve includes—

a driver movably positioned in the body;

an electrically insulated actuator operably coupled to the driver and the valve, wherein the actuator moves the valve to dispense fuel into the combustion chamber in response to movement of the driver; and

a stop coupled to the actuator, wherein the driver contacts the stop to move the valve via the actuator to dispense the fuel;

means for communicating the one or more combustion chamber parameters to the means for adaptively controlling the valve; and

means for igniting the fuel that is introduced into the combustion chamber.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein the actuator comprises an electrically insulated cable or rod.
