Abstract

This disclosure described techniques for coding layer dependencies for a block of video data. According to these techniques, a video encoder generates layer dependencies associated with a given layer. The video encoder also generates a type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies. In some examples, the video encoder generates a first syntax element to signal layer dependencies and a second syntax element to signal a type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies. A video decoder may obtain the layer dependencies associated with a given layer and the type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

Claims

1. A method of decoding video data, the method comprising:

obtaining, from a coded bitstream, layer dependencies associated with a given layer; and

obtaining, from a coded bitstream, a type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the layer is one of:

a view;

a texture component of a view;

a depth component of a view;

a spatial scalable layer; and

a quality scalable layer.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

obtaining, from a coded bitstream, first syntax elements to signal the layer dependencies; and

obtaining, from a coded bitstream, second syntax elements to signal the type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the type of prediction comprises obtaining an indication of one or more layers that can be used for inter-layer texture prediction.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the type of prediction comprises obtaining an indication of one or more layers that cannot be used for inter-layer texture prediction.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the type of prediction comprises obtaining an indication of one or more layers that can only be used for inter-layer motion prediction or can only be used for residual prediction.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining layer dependencies and obtaining the type of prediction both occur in a sequence parameter set.

8. A method of encoding video data, the method comprising:

generating layer dependencies associated with a given layer; and

generating a type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the layer is one of:

a view;

a texture component of a view;

a depth component of a view;

a spatial scalable layer; and

a quality scalable layer.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein the generating includes signaling in a coded bitstream.

11. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

generating first syntax elements to signal the layer dependencies; and

generating second syntax elements to signal the type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

12. The method of claim 8, wherein generating the type of prediction comprises generating an indication of one or more layers that can be used for inter-layer texture prediction.

13. The method of claim 8, wherein generating the type of prediction comprises generating an indication of one or more layers that cannot be used for inter-layer texture prediction.

14. The method of claim 8, wherein generating the type of prediction comprises generating an indication of one or more layers that can only be used for inter-layer motion prediction or can only be used for residual prediction.

15. The method of claim 8, wherein the generating comprises generating and signaling the layer dependencies and the type of prediction in a sequence parameter set.

16. An apparatus for coding video data comprising one or more processors configured to:

code layer dependencies associated with a given layer; and

code a type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the layer is one of:

a view;

a texture component of a view;

a depth component of a view;

a spatial scalable layer; and

a quality scalable layer.

18. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising a memory configured to store video data and in communication with the processors.

19. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein coding video data comprises encoding, and wherein the encoding comprises generating and signaling in a coded bitstream, the generating comprising:

generating first syntax elements to signal the layer dependencies; and

generating second syntax elements to signal the type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

20. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein coding video data comprises decoding, and wherein the decoding comprises:

obtaining, from a coded bitstream, first syntax elements that signal the layer dependencies; and

obtaining, from a coded bitstream, second syntax elements that signal the type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

21. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein coding the type of prediction comprises coding an indication of one or more layers that can be used for inter-layer texture prediction.

22. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein coding the type of prediction comprises coding an indication of one or more layers that cannot be used for inter-layer texture prediction.

23. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein coding the type of prediction comprises coding an indication of one or more layers that can only be used for inter-layer motion prediction or can only be used for residual prediction.

24. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the coding comprises coding and signaling the layer dependencies and the type of prediction in a sequence parameter set.

25. A device that codes video data, the device comprising:

means for coding layer dependencies associated with a given layer; and

means for coding a type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

26. The device of claim 25, wherein the layer is one of:

a view;

a texture component of a view;

a depth component of a view;

a spatial scalable layer; and

a quality scalable layer.

27. The device of claim 25, wherein the means for coding layer dependencies comprises:

means for generating first syntax elements to signal the layer dependencies; and

wherein means for coding a type of prediction comprises means for generating second syntax elements to signal the type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

28. The device of claim 25, wherein the means for coding the type of prediction comprises means for coding an indication of one or more layers that can be used for inter-layer texture prediction.

29. The device of claim 25, wherein the means for coding the type of prediction comprises means for coding an indication of one or more layers that cannot be used for inter-layer texture prediction.

30. The device of claim 25, wherein the means for coding the type of prediction comprises means for coding an indication of one or more layers that can only be used for inter-layer motion prediction or can only be used for residual prediction.

31. The device of claim 25, wherein the means for coding layer dependencies and the means for coding the type of prediction both comprise means for generating a portion of a sequence parameter set.

32. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having stored thereon instructions that, when executed, cause one or more processors of an apparatus for coding video data to:

code layer dependencies associated with a given layer;

code a type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

33. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 32, wherein the layer is one of:

a view;

a texture component of a view;

a depth component of a view;

a spatial scalable layer; and

a quality scalable layer.

34. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 32, further comprising instructions that cause the one or more processors to:

generate first syntax elements to signal the layer dependencies; and

generate second syntax elements to signal the type of prediction associated with one or more of the layer dependencies.

35. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 32, wherein signaling the type of prediction comprises means for signaling an indication of one or more layers that can be used for inter-layer texture prediction.

36. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 32, wherein coding the type of prediction comprises coding an indication of one or more layers that cannot be used for inter-layer texture prediction.

37. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 32, wherein coding the type of prediction comprises coding an indication of one or more layers that can only be used for inter-layer motion prediction or can only be used for residual prediction.

38. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 32, wherein coding layer dependencies and coding the type of prediction both comprise coding portion of a sequence parameter set.
