Abstract

A unitary handheld portable module includes a keypad for entering data and a display for displaying data. A base module is configured to be coupled with and communicate through a telephone line and includes a keypad for dialing a telephone number and a display for displaying information. The portable and base modules are configured to have a mounted configuration in which the portable module is removably mounted on the base module and covers the base module'"'"'s display, and the modules communicate with each other for the portable module'"'"'s display to display information relating to operation of the base module.

Claims

1. A communication module for use with a mobile communication device, the mobile communication device being configured for wireless communication through a wireless network and including an identification number, said communication module comprising:

a communication subsystem configured for communication with a communication network other than the wireless network; and

a communication port adapted for communicating with the mobile communication device;

wherein the communication module is configured to receive the identification number from the portable module through the communication port.

2. The communication module of claim 1, wherein the communication module is configured to receive the identification number when the wireless communication device is removably mounted on the base module.

3. The communication module of claim 1, further comprising a receiving portion sized and shaped to receive the mobile communication device, and wherein the communication module is configured to receive the identification number when the wireless communication device is received in the receiving portion.

4. The communication module of claim 1, wherein the communication device is configured to determine an identity of a user of the mobile communication device based on the identification number.

5. The communication module of claim 1, wherein the identification number is a registration number for registering the mobile communication device on the wireless network.

6. The communication module of claim 1, wherein the base module is configured to receive a contact list from the mobile communication device.

7. The communication module of claim 1, wherein the communication module is configured to receive a passcode from the mobile communication device and to require independent entry of the passcode before initiating one or more functions.

8. The communication module of claim 1, wherein the communication module is configured to receive a passcode from the mobile communication device and to require independent entry of the passcode before providing access to data stored in the communication module.

9. The communication module of claim 1, wherein the communication module is a base telephone and the communication network is a wired telephone network.

10. The communication module of claim 1, wherein the mobile communication device is a cellular telephone.

20. The communication module of claim 1, wherein the mobile communication device is a cellular telephone.

11. A method comprising:

receiving, by a communication module from a mobile communication device through a communication port, an identification number for the mobile communication device;

the mobile communication device being configured for wireless communication through a wireless network; and

the communication module being configured for communicating with a communication network other than the wireless network.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the receiving includes receiving the identification number when the wireless communication device is removably mounted on the base module.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the receiving includes receiving the identification number when the wireless communication device is received in a receiving portion, of the communication device, that is sized and shaped to receive the mobile communication device.

14. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

determining an identity of a user of the mobile communication device based on the identification number.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the identification number is a registration number for registering the mobile communication device on the wireless network.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein the base module is configured to receive a contact list from the mobile communication device.

17. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

receiving, by the communication module from the mobile communication device through a communication port, a passcode for the mobile communication device; and

requiring independent entry of the passcode before providing to one or more functions.

18. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

receiving, by the communication module from the mobile communication device through a communication port, a passcode for the mobile communication device; and

requiring independent entry of the passcode before providing access to data stored in the communication module

19. The method of claim 11, wherein the communication module is a base telephone and the communication network is a wired telephone network.

21. A system comprising:

a mobile communication device that is configured for wireless communication through a wireless network and that includes an identification number; and

a communication module that includes a communication port for communicating with the mobile communication device, and that is configured to

communicate with a communication network other than the wireless network, and

receive the identification number through the communication port from the mobile communication device.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the communication module is configured to receive the identification number when the wireless communication device is removably mounted on the base module.

23. The system of claim 21, wherein the communication module further includes a receiving portion sized and shaped to receive the mobile communication device, and wherein the communication module is configured to receive the identification number when the wireless communication device is received in the receiving portion.

24. The system of claim 21, wherein the communication device is configured to determine an identity of a user of the mobile communication device based on the identification number.

25. The system of claim 21, wherein the identification number is a registration number for registering the mobile communication device on the wireless network.

26. The system of claim 21, wherein the base module is configured to receive a contact list from the mobile communication device.

27. The system of claim 21, wherein the communication module is configured to receive a passcode from the mobile communication device and to require independent entry of the passcode before initiating one or more functions.

28. The system of claim 21, wherein the communication module is configured to receive a passcode from the mobile communication device and to require independent entry of the passcode before providing access to data stored in the communication module.

29. The system of claim 21, wherein the communication module is a base telephone and the communication network is a wired telephone network.

30. The system of claim 21, wherein the mobile communication device is a cellular telephone.
