Abstract

Multimedia content is featured on user pages of an online social network using embed codes that are generated using a configuration file associated with the source ID for the multimedia content and a content ID for the multimedia content. The configuration file, the source ID and the content ID are stored locally by the online social network so that any changes to the embed codes can be made by changing the configuration file associated with the source and regenerating the embed codes. By managing multimedia content in this manner, greater control can be exercised by the online social network over the multimedia content that are featured on its user pages.

Claims

1. A method comprising, by one or more processors associated with one or more computing systems:

receiving information relating to an activation by a first user of a posting control element associated with a multimedia content item, the multimedia content item being hosted by an external third-party source, wherein the information comprises a user ID identifying a user account of the first user, and wherein activation of the posting control element associates the multimedia content item with the user ID;

generating a web page comprising a reference to the multimedia content item and a user profile information associated with the user ID; and

sending the web page for display to a second user, wherein at least a portion of the multimedia content item is retrieved using the reference to the multimedia content item and displayed when the web page is rendered.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the information further comprises a source ID identifying the third party source and a content ID identifying the multimedia content item.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the reference to the multimedia content is an embed code generated using the source ID and content ID, wherein the web page is generated using the embed code.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the reference to the multimedia content is an embed code comprising HTML code that specified a URL of the third-party source associated with the source ID and the content ID.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the source ID identifies a configuration file that specified the format of an embed code and has a variable field into which the content ID is inserted.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the activation of the posting control element is on a web page of the third-party source.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the activation of the posting control element is on a web browser of a client system of the first user.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the information is received from the third-party source.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the information is received from a client system of the first user.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the information is received via an application programming interface (API) associated with one or more of the computing systems, the API causing the one or more computing systems to store information related to the multimedia content item in a data structure in association with the user ID.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the portion of the multimedia content item retrieved using the reference comprises a thumbnail image associated with the multimedia content item.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the portion of the multimedia content item retrieved using the reference comprises a video supplied from the third party source.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the portion of the multimedia content item retrieved using the reference comprises all or most of the multimedia content item.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the portion of the multimedia content item retrieved using the reference comprises a description of the multimedia content item.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the web page is a user profile page associated with the first user.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the web page is a landing page associated with the one or more computing systems.

17. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

accessing, from an online social network, a social graph comprising a plurality of nodes and a plurality of edges connecting the nodes, each of one or more of the nodes being associated with one of a plurality of users of an social-networking system, each connection between two nodes representing a relationship between the two nodes and establishing a single degree of separation between the two nodes.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein:

the first user is associated with a first node of the plurality of nodes, and

the second user is associated with a second node of the plurality of nodes, wherein the second node is within one degree of separation of the first node.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the online social network is external to the one or more computing systems, the online social network being communicably connected with one or more of the computing systems.

20. A system comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory coupled to the processors comprising instructions executable by the processors, the processors operable when executing the instructions to;

receive information relating to an activation by a first user of a posting control element associated with a multimedia content item, the multimedia content item being hosted by an external third-party source, wherein the information comprises a user ID identifying a user account of the first user, and wherein activation of the posting control element associates the multimedia content item with the user ID;

generate a web page comprising a reference to the multimedia content item and a user profile information associated with the user ID; and

send the web page for display to a second user, wherein at least a portion of the multimedia content item is retrieved using the reference to the multimedia content item and displayed when the web page is rendered.
