Abstract

A method, system and device are provided for managing LIPA and/or SIPTO connection releases when UE moves out of residential/enterprise network coverage in case service continuity is not supported for the LIPA/SIPTO PDN connection(s). To address problems caused by not providing service continuity for LIPA/SIPTO PDN connections, the PDN connection/PDP context created in the HeNB/HNB by the MME/SGSN includes context information related to the UE indicating whether such connection is a LIPA PDN connection PDN connection or not. In addition, each UE may be configured to reconnect or not reconnect to the PDN corresponding to a certain APN or service, depending on how the PDN connection was disconnected by the network.

33. A method for use in a user equipment (UE) in idle mode and having at least one packet data network (PDN) connection comprising local internet protocol access (LIPA) connectivity or selected internet protocol traffic offload (SIPTO) connectivity at a first cell having a first cell characteristic, the method comprising:

receiving an Access Stratum (AS) notification that the UE has moved into a second cell having a second cell characteristic; and

sending a Non Access Stratum (NAS) message based on the second cell characteristic being different from the first cell characteristic.

34. The method of claim 33 where each of the first and second cell characteristics comprises a closed subscriber group (CSG) ID, a cell id, or a Radio Access Technology (RAT) type.

35. The method of claim 33 where the UE comprises a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) layer, an Access Stratum (AS) layer, and an application layer.

36. The method of claim 33, where sending the NAS message comprises:

sending a TRACKING AREA UPDATE REQUEST message if the UE has at least one LIPA PDN connection and the AS notification indicates (1) that the second cell is a CSG cell having a CSG identity that is different from a CSG identity of the first cell, or (2) that the second cell is not a CSG cell;

or

sending a PDN DISCONNECT REQUEST message if the UE has at least two PDN connections and at least one PDN connection that is not a LIPA PDN connection and the AS notification indicates (1) that the second cell is a CSG cell having a CSG identity that is different from the CSG identity of the first cell, or (2) that the second cell is not a CSG cell;

or

sending a DETACH RESPONSE message in response to a DETACH REQUEST message if the UE has only LIPA PDN connections and the AS notification indicates (1) that the second cell is a CSG cell having a CSG identity that is different from the CSG identity of the first cell, or (2) that the second cell is not a CSG cell.

37. The method of claim 33, where sending the NAS message comprises:

sending a Tracking Area Update Request message or a PDN DISCONNECT REQUEST message if the UE is communicating with an Evolved Packet System (EPS) system and the first cell characteristic does not match the second cell characteristic, or

sending a Routing Area Update Request message or PDP Context Disconnect Request message if the UE is communicating with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) system and the first cell characteristic does not match the second cell characteristic.

38. The method of claim 33, further comprising starting a timer when the UE enters NAS idle mode having at least one active LIPA PDN connection, where the UE sends the NAS message after the timer expires only if the first cell characteristic and the second cell characteristic are different.

39. The method of claim 33, further comprising starting a timer when the UE receives the Access Stratum (AS) notification that the UE has moved into the second cell that is (1) a CSG cell having a CSG identity that is different from a CSG identity of the first cell, or (2) not a CSG cell.

40. The method of claim 39, where the UE sends the NAS message after the timer expires only if the first cell characteristic and the second cell characteristic are different.

41. A user equipment (UE) comprising:

a processor to, while the UE is in an idle mode and having at least one packet data network (PDN) connection comprising local internet protocol access (LIPA) connectivity or selected internet protocol traffic offload (SIPTO) connectivity at a first cell having a first cell characteristic;

receive an Access Stratum (AS) notification that the UE has moved into a second cell having a second cell characteristic; and

send a Non Access Stratum (NAS) message based on the second cell characteristic being different from the first cell characteristic.

42. The UE of claim 41, where each of the first and second cell characteristics comprises a closed subscriber group (CSG) ID, a cell id, or a Radio Access Technology (RAT) type.

43. The UE of claim 41, where sending the NAS message comprises:

sending a TRACKING AREA UPDATE REQUEST message if the UE has at least one LIPA PDN connection and the AS notification indicates (1) that the second cell is a CSG cell having a CSG identity that is different from a CSG identity of the first cell, or (2) that the second cell is not a CSG cell;

or

sending a PDN DISCONNECT REQUEST message if the UE has at least two PDN connections and at least one PDN connection that is not a LIPA PDN connection and the AS notification indicates (1) that the second cell is a CSG cell having a CSG identity that is different from the CSG identity of the first cell, or (2) that the second cell is not a CSG cell;

or

sending a DETACH RESPONSE message in response to a DETACH REQUEST message if the UE has only LIPA PDN connections and the AS notification indicates (1) that the second cell is a CSG cell having a CSG identity that is different from the CSG identity of the first cell, or (2) that the second cell is not a CSG cell.

44. The UE of claim 41, where sending the NAS message comprises:

sending a Tracking Area Update Request message or a PDN DISCONNECT REQUEST message if the UE is communicating with an Evolved Packet System (EPS) system and the first cell characteristic does not match the second cell characteristic, or

sending a Routing Area Update Request message or PDP Context Disconnect Request message if the UE is communicating with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) system and the first cell characteristic does not match the second cell characteristic.

45. A method for use in a user equipment (UE) having at least one PDN connection comprising local internet protocol access (LIPA) connectivity or selected internet protocol traffic offload (SIPTO) connectivity at a first cell having a first cell characteristic, the method comprising:

performing a CSFB procedure without PS handover to move the UE to a second cell having a second cell characteristic, where the second cell has no service continuity for the at least one PDN connection;

sending a Non Access Stratum (NAS) message to resume E-UTRAN service from the second cell; and

receiving a PDN Disconnect Request message to release the at least one PDN connection if the first cell characteristic does not match the second cell characteristic.

46. The method of claim 45, where performing the CSFB procedure without PS handover moves the UE to the second cell which is a E-UTRAN cell that is not a CSG cell or that has a CSG identity that is different from a CSG identity of the first cell.

47. The method of claim 45, where the UE receives the PDN Disconnect Request message to release the at least one PDN connection if the first cell characteristic comprises a CSG ID that does not have a matching CSG-ID in the second cell characteristic.
