Abstract

A portable housing supports a processor coupled to memory for storing medical firmware and wireless radio firmware, first and second radios, a processor, and a power source. Communications are effected between an implantable medical device and the first radio in accordance with program instructions of the medical firmware, and between the second radio and the wireless network in accordance with program instructions of the wireless radio firmware. The first and second radios are configured to operate cooperatively in a first testing configuration, by which the first radio operates as a transmitter and the second radio operates as a receiver, and cooperatively in a second testing configuration, by which the second radio operates as a transmitter and the first radio operates as a receiver. Functional testing of the first and second radios is implemented using one or both of the first and second testing configurations.

28. A communicator for effecting communications via a wireless network connection and for communicating with a medical device, the communicator comprising:

memory configured to store medical firmware and radio firmware;

a processor coupled to the memory;

a first radio configured to effect communications with a medical device in accordance with the medical firmware; and

a second radio configured to effect communications via a wireless network connection in accordance with the radio firmware;

wherein the processor is configured to perform a diagnostic analysis comprising;

a first signal test wherein the first radio transmits a first signal configured to be received by the second radio, and

a second signal test wherein the second radio transmits a second signal configured to be received by the first radio.

29. The communicator of claim 28, wherein the processor is further configured to determine an operating state of the first and second radios.

30. The communicator of claim 28, wherein the processor is further configured to effect one or more of the following:

measuring transmit power, measuring receive sensitivity, verifying data or modulation, measuring frequency accuracy, and measuring out-of-band rejection.

31. The communicator of claim 28, wherein the processor is further configured to determine an operating state of the first and second radios using one or more parameters of the first signal or second signal.

32. The communicator of claim 28, wherein the processor is configured to determine a geographic location of the patient using the second radio, the processor further configured to determine if conditions at the geographic location are suitable for effecting communications with the medical device using the first radio.

33. The communicator of claim 28, wherein the processor is configured to temporarily pause communications between the medical device and the first radio to facilitate maintenance of a substantially continuous connection between the second radio and the wireless network.

34. The communicator of claim 28, wherein the processor is configured to interleave data transmissions via the first radio with data transmissions via the second radio in different time slots to facilitate substantially concurrent operation of the first and second radios.

35. The communicator of claim 34, wherein each of the first and second radios is coupled to a common antenna, and use of the antenna by each of the first and second radios is multiplexed in accordance with the different time slots.

36. The communicator of claim 28, wherein the first radio comprises a short range radio, and the second radio comprises a long range radio.

37. The communicator of claim 28, wherein the second radio comprises a cellular radio, and the first radio comprises one of the group consisting of:

a Medical Implant Communication Service (MICS) radio, an Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) radio, and a Short Range Devices (SRD) radio.

38. The communicator of claim 28, wherein the processor is configured to execute the medical firmware to ensure that communications between the first radio and the medical device conform to predefined medical device guidelines.

39. A method for effecting communications via a wireless network connection and for communicating with a medical device, the method comprising:

effecting communications between a medical device and a first radio of a communicator in accordance with medical firmware program instructions;

effecting communications between a second radio of the communicator and a wireless network in accordance with wireless radio firmware program instructions;

transmitting a first test signal from the first radio to be received by the second radio;

transmitting a second test signal from the second radio to be received by the first radio;

detecting a performance deficiency from the first test signal and the second test signal.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein performing functional testing comprises one or more of measuring transmit power, measuring receive sensitivity, verifying data or modulation, measuring frequency accuracy, and measuring out-of-band rejection.

41. The method of claim 39, further comprising determining a geographic location using the second radio and determining if conditions at the location are suitable for effecting communications with the medical device using the first radio.

42. The method of claim 39, further comprising temporarily pausing communications between the medical device and the first radio to facilitate maintenance of a substantially continuous connection between the second radio and the wireless network.

43. The method of claim 39, further comprising interleaving communications between the medical device and the first radio with communications between the wireless network and the second radio in different time slots to facilitate substantially concurrent operation of the first and second radios.

44. The method of claim 43, wherein each of the first and second radios is coupled to a common antenna, and use of the antenna by each of the first and second radios is multiplexed in accordance with the different time slots.

45. The method of claim 39, wherein the first radio comprises a short range radio, and the second radio comprises a long range radio.

46. The method of claim 39, wherein the second radio comprises a cellular radio, and the first radio comprises one radio selected from the group consisting of:

a Medical Implant Communication Service (MICS) radio, an Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) radio, and a Short Range Methods (SRD) radio.

47. The method of claim 39, wherein execution of program instructions of the medical firmware ensures that communications between the first radio and the medical device conform to predefined medical device guidelines.
