Abstract

The present disclosure provides a touchscreen keyboard with corrective word prediction. A method for correcting text input on an electronic device is described. The method comprises: displaying a virtual keyboard on a touchscreen, the virtual keyboard including a plurality of keys; receiving input from the virtual keyboard; generating one or more predicted sets of characters in accordance with the received input; and displaying a predicted set of characters at a designated location when the received input does not match one of the predicted sets of characters.

Claims

1. A method for correcting text input on an electronic device, comprising:

displaying a virtual keyboard on a touchscreen, the virtual keyboard including a plurality of keys;

receiving input from the virtual keyboard;

generating one or more predicted sets of characters in accordance with the received input; and

displaying a predicted set of characters at a designated location when the received input does not match one of the predicted sets of characters.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the designated location is a location associated with a key of the virtual keyboard of the display which corresponds to a last input character.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the predicted set of characters displayed at the location associated with a key of the virtual keyboard of the display which corresponds to a last input character is a candidate word correction.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the candidate word correction replaces letters in the received input and/or removes letters in the received input.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the candidate word correction completes the received input while correcting the received input.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein one or more candidate word predictions which do not correct the received input are displayed at a location associated with a key of the virtual keyboard of the display which corresponds to a subsequent candidate input character.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the candidate word predictions are shown in a first format and the candidate word correction is shown in a second format different from the first format.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the displayed predicted set of characters is a mostly highly ranked predicted set of characters in the generated predicted sets of characters.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

inputting the displayed predicted set of characters in response to detecting designated input.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the designated input is a swipe at or near the displayed predicted set of characters.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the designated input is a tap at or near the displayed predicted set of characters.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the inputting comprises replacing the current word in an input field with the displayed predicted set of characters.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the designated location is a location on the virtual keyboard associated with a <

SPACE>

key.

14. An electronic device, comprising:

a processor;

a touchscreen coupled to the processor;

wherein the processor is configured to;

display a virtual keyboard, the virtual keyboard including a plurality of keys;

receive input from the virtual keyboard;

generate one or more predicted sets of characters in accordance with the received input; and

display a predicted set of characters at a designated location when the received input does not match one of the predicted sets of characters.

15. The electronic device of claim 14, wherein the designated location is a location associated with a key of the virtual keyboard of the display which corresponds to a last input character.

16. The electronic device of claim 15, wherein the predicted set of characters displayed at the location associated with a key of the virtual keyboard of the display which corresponds to a last input character is a candidate word correction.

17. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the candidate word correction replaces letters in the received input and/or removes letters in the received input.

18. The electronic device of claim 17, wherein the candidate word correction completes the received input while correcting the received input.

19. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein one or more candidate word predictions which do not correct the received input are displayed at a location associated with a key of the virtual keyboard of the display which corresponds to a subsequent candidate input character.

20. The electronic device of claim 14, wherein the displayed predicted set of characters is a mostly highly ranked predicted set of characters in the generated predicted sets of characters.
