Abstract

A method for a hybrid blood and peritoneal dialysis (“PD”) machine comprising: (i) determining whether a previous treatment left a last fill of dialysate in a patient'"'"'s peritoneum; (ii) if a next treatment is a PD treatment, and if the previous treatment did not leave the last fill of dialysate, causing a PD treatment in which a first cycle is a fill cycle to be initiated; (iii) if the next treatment is a PD treatment, and if the previous treatment did leave the last fill of dialysate, causing a PD treatment in which a first cycle is a last fill drain cycle to be initiated; and (iv) if the next treatment is a blood treatment and if the previous treatment did leave the last fill of dialysate, causing a blood treatment including a last fill drain cycle to be initiated.

Claims

1. A method for a hybrid blood treatment and peritoneal dialysis (“

PD”

) machine comprising;

(i) determining whether a previous treatment left a last fill of dialysate in a patient'"'"'s peritoneum;

(ii) if a next treatment is a PD treatment, and if the previous treatment did not leave the last fill of dialysate in the patient'"'"'s peritoneum, initiating a PD treatment in which a first cycle is a fill cycle;

(iii) if the next treatment is a PD treatment, and if the previous treatment did leave the last fill of dialysate in the patient'"'"'s peritoneum, initiating a PD treatment in which a first cycle is a last fill drain cycle; and

(iv) if the next treatment is a blood treatment, and if the previous treatment did leave the last fill of dialysate in the patient'"'"'s peritoneum, initiating a blood treatment including a last fill drain cycle.

2. The method of claim 1, which further includes prompting a fluidic connection for the last fill drain cycle in (iii) and (iv).

3. The method of claim 1, which includes configuring the machine so that a user determines a therapy type for the next treatment.

4. The method of claim 1, which includes configuring the machine so that the machine determines a therapy type for the next treatment.

5. The method of claim 4, which includes configuring the machine to determine the therapy type for the next treatment according to (a) a prescribed schedule or (b) an algorithm.

6. The method of claim 5, which includes structuring the algorithm to perform a first therapy type for a predetermined number of consecutive days and performing a second therapy type for a same or different predetermined number of consecutive days.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein determining whether the previous treatment left a last fill of dialysate in the patient'"'"'s peritoneum includes using:

(i) data about the previous treatment already stored in the machine;

(ii) data about the previous treatment entered by a user of the machine;

or (iii) data from a device in fluid communication with a catheter implanted in the patient'"'"'s peritoneum.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein determining whether the previous treatment left a last fill of dialysate in the patient'"'"'s peritoneum includes attempting to drain the patient and looking for fluid.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein

if fluid is found, determining that the previous treatment left the last fill of dialysate;

and

if no fluid is found, sensing for an obstruction in a patient line and/or a catheter, and if no obstruction is sensed, determining that the previous treatment did not leave a last fill of dialysate.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein sensing for an obstruction includes attempting to deliver an amount of fluid to the patient and sensing for an increase in pressure.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein if the next treatment is a blood treatment, and if the previous treatment left the last fill of dialysate in the patient'"'"'s peritoneum, performing the last fill drain cycle before, during or after the blood treatment.

12. A method for a hybrid blood treatment and peritoneal dialysis (“

PD”

) machine comprising;

(i) determining whether a next treatment is a PD treatment or a blood treatment;

(ii) if the next treatment is a blood treatment, providing a blood treatment setup procedure;

(iii) if the next treatment is a PD treatment, determining whether a subsequent treatment to the PD treatment is a PD treatment or a blood treatment;

(iv) if the subsequent treatment is a PD treatment, configuring the next PD treatment to include a last fill of PD fluid that is to remain in a patient'"'"'s peritoneum after completion of the next PD treatment; and

(v) if the subsequent treatment is a blood treatment, configuring the next PD treatment so as not to include the last fill of PD fluid.

13. The method of claim 12, which includes allowing a user to choose at least one of whether (a) the next treatment or (b) the subsequent treatment to the PD treatment is a PD treatment or a blood treatment.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the machine determines according to a schedule or algorithm whether at least one of (a) the next treatment or (b) the subsequent treatment to the PD treatment is a PD treatment or a blood treatment.

15. A method for a hybrid blood treatment and peritoneal dialysis (“

PD”

) machine comprising;

(i) determining whether a next treatment is a PD treatment or a blood treatment;

(ii) if the next treatment is a blood treatment, providing a blood treatment setup procedure; and

(iii) if the next treatment is a PD treatment, providing a PD treatment setup procedure.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein if the next treatment is a PD treatment, determining whether a last fill of dialysate from a previous treatment needs to be removed from a patient.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein determining whether a next treatment is a PD treatment or a blood treatment includes providing a selectable input to manually choose the PD treatment or the blood treatment.

18. A hybrid blood treatment and peritoneal dialysis (“

PD”

) system comprising;

at least one processor and memory programmed to

(i) determine whether a previous treatment left a last fill of dialysate in a patient'"'"'s peritoneum;

(ii) if a next treatment is a PD treatment and if the previous treatment did not leave the last fill of dialysate in the patient'"'"'s peritoneum, cause a PD treatment in which a first cycle is a fill cycle to be initiated;

(iii) if the next treatment is a PD treatment and if the previous treatment did leave the last fill of dialysate in the patient'"'"'s peritoneum, cause a PD treatment in which a first cycle is a last fill drain cycle to be initiated; and

(iv) if the next treatment is a blood treatment and if the previous treatment did leave the last fill of dialysate in the patient'"'"'s peritoneum, cause a blood treatment including a last fill drain cycle to be initiated.

19. A hybrid blood treatment and peritoneal dialysis (“

PD”

) system comprising;

at least one processor and memory programmed to

(i) determine whether a next treatment is a PD treatment or a blood treatment;

(ii) if the next treatment is a blood treatment, provide a blood treatment setup procedure;

(iii) if the next treatment is a PD treatment, determine whether a subsequent treatment to the PD treatment is a PD treatment or a blood treatment;

(iv) if the subsequent treatment is a PD treatment, configure the next PD treatment to include a last fill of PD fluid that is left in a patient'"'"'s peritoneum after the next PD treatment; and

(v) if the subsequent treatment is a blood treatment, configure the next PD treatment not to include the last fill of PD fluid.

20. A hybrid blood treatment and peritoneal dialysis (“

PD”

) system comprising;

at least one processor and memory programmed to

(i) determine whether a next treatment is a PD treatment or a blood treatment;

(ii) if the next treatment is a blood treatment, provide a blood treatment setup procedure; and

(iii) if the next treatment is a PD treatment, provide a PD treatment setup procedure.
