ANNOTATING DIGITAL DOCUMENTS USING TEMPORAL AND POSITIONAL MODES
First Claim
1. A method, implemented at least in part by one or more computing devices, for annotating digital documents, the method comprising:
- by the one or more computing devices;
receiving a digital document;
converting pages of the received digital document into corresponding document image pages;
receiving annotation content for the document images, wherein the annotation content is supported in a temporal annotation mode and in a positional annotation mode; and
storing the document image pages and the annotation content, wherein the document image pages and the annotation content are stored separately, and wherein the document image pages are available for display separately from the annotation content.

Abstract
Digital documents can be annotated using a variety of techniques. Document image pages can be created from digital documents. Annotations can be created using the document image pages. Annotation content (such as individual annotation elements, including text, audio, video, picture, and/or drawing annotation elements) can be generated from the annotations. Annotation content can be supported in a temporal annotation mode and in a positional annotation mode. Annotation content and document image pages can be stored separately. Annotation content and document image pages can be used (e.g., downloaded, viewed, played, edited, etc.) by one or more client devices.

10. A method, implemented at least in part by a computing device, for annotating digital documents, the method comprising:
by the computing device; obtaining a plurality of document image pages, wherein the plurality of document image pages correspond to pages of a digital document that have been converted into the plurality of document image pages; receiving, from a user of the computing device, annotations of the plurality of document image pages, wherein the annotations are supported in a temporal annotation mode and in a positional annotation mode; generating annotation content from the received annotations; and providing the annotation content for storage, wherein the annotation content is stored independent of the document image pages, and wherein the document image pages are available for display separately from the annotation content. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)
