Abstract

An implant unit delivery tool is disclosed having an implant tool and an implant activator. The implant tool may be configured to retain an implant unit during an implantation procedure in which the implant unit is fixated to tissue. The implant activator may be associated with the implant tool. Additionally, the implant activator may be configured to selectively transfer power to the implant unit during the implantation procedure to cause modulation of at least one nerve in the body of a subject prior to final fixation of the implant unit to the tissue.

Claims

1. A device for testing a sleep apnea implant during an implantation procedure, the device comprising:

an implant tool, configured to retain an implant unit during a procedure when the implant is located in a vicinity of a hypoglossal nerve in a region between a neck and a chin of a subject; and

an implant activator associated with the implant tool, the implant activator being configured to selectively transfer power to the implant unit during the implantation procedure to cause modulation of at least one hypoglossal nerve prior to final fixation of the implant to tissue.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the implant activator includes a power source and the power transferred to the implant unit is supplied by the power source.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the power source is configured to wirelessly transfer power from the power source to the implant unit.

4. The device of claim 2, wherein the power source is a battery.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the implant activator is selectively moveable toward and away from the implant unit.

6. The device of claim 5, further including a slideable engagement portion configured to activate the implant activator causing the implant activator to selectively move toward and away from the implant unit.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the implant tool includes a track, and the implant activator is configured to slide within the track.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the implant activator includes a protrusion slideably disposed within the track.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the implant activator includes a processor configured to regulate the power transfer to the implant unit.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the implant activator is configured to transfer the power to the implant unit through radiofrequency transmission.

11. The device of claim 1, including a locking mechanism configured to temporarily affix at least a portion of the delivery tool in a fixed location relative to tissue in the body of the subject.

12. The device of claim 1, including automatic sutures configured to be triggered to fix the implant unit in place relative to tissue in the subject'"'"'s body.

13. A method of testing the functionality of an implant unit, the method comprising:

moving an implant activator from a first position to a second position on a delivery tool, prior to final fixation of an implant unit by the delivery tool; and

transferring power from the implant activator to the implant unit when the implant activator is in the second position,

wherein transferring power to the implant unit causes modulation of at least one nerve in the body of a subject.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein power is wirelessly transferred from the implant activator to the implant unit.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the implant activator includes a power source configured to supply the power to the implant unit.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the power source is a battery.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the second position is closer to the implant unit than the first position.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein moving the implant activator from the first position to the second position includes sliding the implant activator along a track on the delivery tool.

19. The method of claim 18, further including selectively activating the implant activator and causing the implant activator to move toward and away from the implant unit with a slidable engagement portion.

20. The method of claim 13, further including:

determining that an implant location is suitable based on one or more patient signals; and

implanting the implant unit at the location.

21. The method of claim 20, further including:

determining that a first implant location is not suitable based on one or more patient signals; and

moving the implant location to a second implant location.

22. An implant delivery tool, comprising:

an implant tool, configured to retain an implant unit during an implantation procedure in which the implant unit is fixated to tissue;

a track disposed on the implant tool; and

an implant activator associated with the implant tool, the implant activator being configured to selectively slide within the track from a first position to a second position;

a power source configured to wirelessly transfer power from the implant activator to the implant unit, when the implant activator is in the second position, to cause modulation of at least one nerve in the body of a subject.

23. An implant unit delivery tool, comprising:

an implant tool, configured to retain an implant unit during an implantation procedure in which the implant unit is fixated to tissue; and

an implant activator associated with the implant tool, the implant activator being configured to selectively transfer power to the implant unit during the implantation procedure to cause modulation of at least one nerve in the body of a subject prior to final fixation of the implant unit to the tissue.
