Abstract

The disclosed subject matter relates to a system for messaging between applications, the system having one or more processors and a memory including instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations including receiving a message including an identifier associated with a web application having a subscription to receive selected events associated with a publisher operating on a data network. The operations also include receiving, from the publisher, an event notification of at least one of the selected events. The operations also include determining whether the web application is subscribed to receive the event notification. The operations also include transmitting, in a case where the web application is subscribed to receive the event notification, an indication of the event notification to the web application.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method for messaging between applications via a web server, the method comprising:

receiving, from a web application, a message including an identifier associated with the web application having a subscription to receive selected events associated with a publisher operating on a data network;

receiving, from the publisher, an event notification of at least one of the selected events;

determining whether the web application is subscribed to receive the event notification; and

transmitting, in a case where the web application is subscribed to receive the event notification, an indication of the event notification to the web application.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the identifier is a registration identifier pertaining to a registration by the web application or a channel identifier pertaining to a channel carrying communications associated with the web application.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining comprises detecting whether the web application is in a sleep state or an unloaded state.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the transmitting further comprises transmitting, upon receipt of the event notification, a wakeup notification to the web application such that the web application transitions from the sleep state to a wakeup state.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the transmitting further comprises transmitting, upon receipt of the event notification, a wakeup notification to the web application such that the web application transitions from the unloaded state to a loaded state.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving user consent via a user interface to authorize the web application to receive notifications relating to user-defined content.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising authenticating the web application to authorize the web application with access to receive the event notification.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising detecting an event associated with the publisher via the data network, the event being identified within the event notification.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining comprises:

parsing the event notification to obtain an event descriptor associated with the web application;

comparing at least a portion of the event descriptor with an extension identifier associated with the web application.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the determining comprises:

obtaining user preference settings via a user interface;

comparing the user preference settings with a least a portion of the event notification.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

generating the indication in response to obtaining the event notification.

12. The method of claim 1, where the event notification is transmitted via a broadcast, a multicast or a unicast transmission.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

calling an application programming interface (API) to push the event notification to the web application.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the event notification comprises an event identifier associated with one of the selected events.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

storing the received registration identifier with a user profile associated with the web application in a data structure; and

comparing the stored registration identifier with the event identifier to determine a match.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

listening, via an HTTP endpoint, for the selected events associated with the publisher;

detecting at least one of the selected events associated with the publisher at the HTTP endpoint.

17. A system for messaging between applications, the system comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory including instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to facilitate the steps of;

receiving a message including an identifier associated with a subscriber having a subscription to receive selected events associated with a publisher operating on a data network;

receiving, from the publisher, an event notification of at least one of the selected events;

determining whether the subscriber is subscribed to receive the event notification; and

transmitting, in a case where the subscriber is subscribed to receive the event notification, an indication of the event notification to the subscriber.

18. A non-transitory machine readable medium embodying instructions that, when executed by a machine, allow the machine to perform a method for messaging between applications, the method comprising:

receiving a message including an identifier associated with a subscriber having a subscription to receive selected events associated with a publisher operating on a data network;

receiving, from the publisher, an event notification of at least one of the selected events;

determining whether the subscriber is subscribed to receive the event notification; and

transmitting, in a case where the subscriber is subscribed to receive the event notification, an indication of the event notification to the subscriber.

19. An apparatus for messaging between applications, the method comprising:

means for receiving a message including an identifier associated with a subscriber having a subscription to receive selected events associated with a publisher operating on a data network;

means for receiving, from the publisher, an event notification of at least one of the selected events;

means for determining whether the subscriber is subscribed to receive the event notification; and

means for transmitting, in a case where the subscriber is subscribed to receive the event notification, an indication of the event notification to the subscriber.

20. A computer-implemented method for messaging between applications, the method comprising:

transmitting, to a web server, a message including an identifier associated with a web application subscribed to receive selected events associated with a publisher operating on a data network;

receiving, from the web server, an indication of an event notification associated with the publisher based on one or more subscriptions to the selected events;

determining whether one or more applications are subscribed to receive the event notification; and

providing, in a case where the one or more applications are subscribed to receive the event notification, the indication of the event notification to the one or more applications.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

receiving a request to register the web application to receive the selected events associated with the publisher;

calling an application programming interface (API) to obtain a channel identifier for the web application; and

storing the obtained channel identifier in a user profile associated with the web application.

22. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

executing a function related to displaying a pop-up window for receiving a user input; and

requesting user credentials associated with the web application via the pop-up window when the API is called.

23. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

determining whether the web application has authorization to receive the event notification.

24. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

upon an occurrence of an event associated with the publisher, loading an event page associated with the web application if the event is one of a set of events registered by the web application; and

using the event page, executing a function related to displaying a pop-up alert with the event notification.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the event page provides a callback to a function with the event notification for displaying the event notification to the web application.

26. The method of claim 20, wherein the event notification is directed to a particular user such that one or more applications associated with the user are authorized to receive the event notification.

27. The method of claim 20, wherein receiving the indication comprises receiving a wakeup notification to request the one or more applications to transition from a sleep state to a wakeup state.

28. The method of claim 20, wherein receiving the indication comprises receiving a wakeup notification to request the one or more applications to transition from an unloaded state to a loaded state.

29. A system for messaging between applications, the system comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory including instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to facilitate the steps of;

transmitting a message including an identifier associated with a web application subscribed to receive selected events associated with a publisher operating on a data network;

receiving an indication of an event notification associated with the publisher based on one or more subscriptions to the selected events;

determining whether one or more applications are subscribed to receive the event notification; and

providing, in a case where the one or more applications are subscribed to receive the event notification, the indication of the event notification to the one or more applications.

30. A non-transitory machine readable medium embodying instructions that, when executed by a machine, allow the machine to perform a method for messaging between applications, the method comprising:

transmitting a message including an identifier associated with an application subscribed to receive selected events associated with a publisher operating on a data network;

receiving an indication of an event notification associated with the publisher based on one or more subscriptions to the selected events;

determining whether one or more applications are subscribed to receive the event notification; and

providing, in a case where the one or more applications are subscribed to receive the event notification, the indication of the event notification to the one or more applications.

31. An apparatus for messaging between applications, the method comprising:

means for transmitting a message including an identifier associated with an application subscribed to receive selected events associated with a publisher operating on a data network;

means for receiving an indication of an event notification associated with the publisher based on one or more subscriptions to the selected events;

means for determining whether one or more applications are subscribed to receive the event notification; and

means for providing, in a case where the one or more applications are subscribed to receive the event notification, the indication of the event notification to the one or more applications.

32. A system for messaging between application, the system comprising:

a server component; and

a client component having an interface to the server component, the server component being configured to;

receive, from the client component, a message including an identifier associated with a subscriber having a subscription to receive selected events associated with a publisher operating on a data network,

receive, from the publisher, an event notification of at least one of the selected events,

determine whether the subscriber is subscribed to receive the event notification, and

transmit, in a case where the subscriber is subscribed to receive the event notification, an indication of the event notification to the client component; and

the client component being configured to;

transmit, to the server component, a message including an identifier associated with an application subscribed to receive selected events associated with a publisher operating on a data network,

receive, from the server component, an indication of an event notification associated with the publisher based on one or more subscriptions to the selected events,

determine whether one or more applications are subscribed to receive the event notification, and

provide, in a case where the one or more applications are subscribed to receive the event notification, the indication of the event notification to the one or more applications.
