Abstract

A method for reporting channel quality from a user equipment (UE) to a base station is described. The UE derives a channel quality for each of a plurality of downlink resources. The UE transmits channel quality reports in a pattern of time intervals by rotating through the plurality of downlink resources in different time intervals of the pattern, wherein a channel quality report is not transmitted by the UE in each time interval of a frame.

Claims

1. A method implemented by a user equipment (UE) for providing channel quality, the method comprising:

determining channel quality information for a plurality of sets of transmission resources associated with transmissions from the base station;

for each respective set of transmission resources, selecting a respective modulation and coding set (MCS) for the respective set of transmission resources, wherein the respective MCS is selected from a predefined number of potential MCSs; and

sending a channel quality report to the base station, wherein the channel quality report is indicative of at least one of the respective MCSs.

2. The method as in claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a request for channel quality reporting from the base station.

3. The method as in claim 1, wherein the channel quality report is indicative of each of the respective MCSs associated with the plurality of respective sets of transmission resources.

4. The method as in claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a subsequent transmission using an MCS indicted in the channel quality report.

5. The method as in claim 1, wherein each respective set of transmission resources correspond to at least one of a timeslot or a sub-channel.

The method as in claim 1, wherein one of the respective sets of transmission resources is selected as a reference resource and at least one indication of channel quality included in the channel quality report is signaled as a differential value from a value associated with the reference resource.

7. The method as in claim 1, further comprising measuring reference signals transmitted by the base station in order to determine the channel quality information for the plurality of sets of transmission resources.

8. A method for a User Equipment (UE) to report channel quality data to a base station, the method comprising:

determining a first value associated with a downlink channel quality, wherein the first value associated with the downlink channel quality is a single value that is determined for a plurality of sets of downlink transmission resources;

determining a respective differential channel quality value for each of the other sets of downlink transmission resources of the plurality of the sets of downlink transmission resources, wherein each of the respective differential channel quality values is coded based on a difference from the first value; and

transmitting a channel quality report comprising the first value and each of the respective differential channel quality values to the base station.

9. The method as in claim 8, wherein the first value comprises a mean value associated with each of the sets of downlink transmission resources.

10. The method as in claim 8, wherein the first value comprises more bits than are utilized for coding any of the respective differential channel quality values.

11. The method as in claim 10, wherein the first value is four bits.

12. The method as in claim 11, wherein each of the respective differential channel quality values is two bits.

13. A method for a User Equipment (UE) to report channel quality information to a base station, the method comprising:

determining a plurality of sets of downlink transmission resources;

determining a first channel quality value associated with transmission within a first set of downlink transmission resources, wherein the first channel quality value comprises a recommended modulation and coding set (MCS) for transmitting within the first set of downlink transmission resources;

reporting the first channel quality value to the base station at a first reporting instance;

determining a second channel quality value associated with transmission within a second set of downlink transmission resources, wherein the second channel quality value comprises a recommended MCS for transmitting within the second set of downlink transmission resources; and

reporting the second channel quality to the base station at a second reporting instance, wherein the second channel quality value associated with transmission within the second set of downlink transmission resources is reported after the first channel quality value associated with transmission within the first set of downlink transmission resources based on a predefined order associated with the plurality of sets of downlink transmission resources.

14. The method as in claim 13, wherein the predefined order defines a rotation for reporting channel quality values associated with transmission within each of the plurality of sets of downlink transmission resources.

15. The method as in claim 13, further comprising transmitting a channel quality report based on receiving a request for the channel quality report from the base station.

16. The method as in claim 15, wherein at least channel quality value indicated by the channel quality report indicates a channel quality as a difference from another reported channel quality.

17. The method as in claim 13, wherein each of the plurality of sets of transmission resources correspond to at least one of a timeslot or a sub-channel.

18. The method as in claim 13, further comprising receiving at least one of:

a first downlink transmission within the first set of downlink transmission resources, wherein the first downlink transmission utilizes the recommended MCS for transmitting within the first set of downlink transmission resources;

or

a second downlink transmission within the second set of downlink transmission resources, wherein the second downlink transmission utilizes the recommended MCS for transmitting within the second set of downlink transmission resources.

19. The method as in claim 13, further comprising:

performing a first measurement within the first set of downlink transmission resources to determine the first channel quality value; and

performing a second measurement within the second set of downlink transmission resources to determine the second channel quality value.

20. The method as in claim 19, wherein the second measurement is performed after the first measurement based on the predefined order associated with the plurality of sets of downlink transmission resources.
