Abstract

A touch panel having a transparent capacitive sensing medium configured to detect multiple touches or near touches that occur at the same time and at distinct locations in the plane of the touch panel and to produce distinct signals representative of the location of the touches on the plane of the touch panel for each of the multiple touches is disclosed.

Claims

1. A touch screen method comprising:

providing a touch screen having a transparent capacitive sensing medium, the transparent capacitive sensing medium including a first layer having a plurality of first conductive lines that are electrically isolated from one another and formed from a transparent conductive material and a second layer spatially separated from the first layer and having a plurality of second conductive lines that are electrically isolated from one another and formed from a transparent conductive material, the plurality of second conductive lines crossing the plurality of first conductive lines at sensing points positioned at different locations in the plane of the touch screen;

driving the plurality of sensing points of the touch screen using the plurality of first conductive lines;

reading outputs from the plurality of sensing points using the plurality of second conductive lines;

producing and analyzing images of the touch screen plane at different moments in time in order to determine touch events when objects touch the touch screen; and

comparing a current image to a past image in order to determine a change in touch events.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein producing and analyzing the image includes calculating the boundaries and determining the coordinates for each touch event.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein determining a change in touch events includes determining a change in pressure, location, direction, speed and acceleration for each of the objects touching the touch screen.

4. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the touch screen is incorporated into an electronic device and the method further comprising performing an action on the electronic device based on the determined change.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the plurality of first conductive lines are exclusively used as drive lines and the plurality of second conductive lines are exclusively used as sense lines.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein driving the plurality of sensing points comprises connecting the plurality of first conductive lines to an alternating voltage source.

7. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein reading of the outputs from the plurality of sensing points comprising multiplexing the outputs from the plurality of second conductive lines.

8. The method as recited in claim 7, wherein the plurality of first conductive lines form rows (columns) and the plurality of second conductive lines form columns (rows), and the method further comprises storing the outputs from each given row (column) prior to multiplexing the given row (column).

9. The method as recited in claim 8, wherein outputs of each row (column) are stored and subsequently multiplexed.

10. The method as recited in claim 7, further comprising feeding the multiplexed outputs to an analog to digital converter.

11. The method as recited in claim 7, wherein the multiplexed outputs are fed to an analog to digital converter and outputs of the analog to digital converter are fed to a digital signal processor.

12. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the touch screen overlays a display device and the method further comprising performing an action on the display device based on the determined change.

13. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the first layer and the second layer are disposed on opposite sides of an optically transmissive member.

14. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the plurality of first and second conductive lines are formed from the same transparent conductive material.

20. The electronic device as recited in claim 14 wherein the sensing circuit comprises an inverting amplifier.

21. The electronic device as recited in claim 20, wherein the inverting amplifier comprises:

a non-inverting input held at a constant voltage;

an inverting input coupled to at least one of the sensing points,

an output coupled to processor; and

an impedance coupled between the output and the inverting input.

15. An electronic device incorporating a display and a touch screen comprises:

a transparent capacitive sensing medium, the transparent capacitive sensing medium including a first layer having a plurality of first conductive lines that are electrically isolated from one another and formed from a transparent conductive material and a second layer spatially separated from the first layer and having a plurality of second conductive lines that are electrically isolated from one another and formed from a transparent conductive material, the plurality of second conductive lines crossing the plurality of first conductive lines at sensing points positioned at different locations in the plane of the touch screen;

a voltage source configured to drive the plurality of sensing points of the touch screen using the plurality of first conductive lines;

a sensing circuit for reading outputs from the plurality of second conductive lines connected to the sensing points;

a processor coupled to the sensing circuit for producing and analyzing images of the touch screen plane at different moment in time in order to determine touch events when objects touch the touch screen and for comparing the current image to a past image in order to determine a change in touch events.

16. The electronic device as recited in claim 15, wherein the processor monitors a change in capacitance coupling at the sensing points.

17. The electronic device as recited in claim 15, wherein the processor calculates boundaries and determines the coordinates for each touch event.

18. The electronic device as recited in claim 15, wherein the processor determines a change in pressure, location, direction, speed and acceleration for each touch event.

19. The electronic device as recited in claim 15, wherein the processor performs an action on the display of the electronic device in response to the determined change.
