Abstract

A hemodialysis system including (i) a dialyzer, (ii) a blood circuit including a blood pump in fluid communication with the dialyzer, (iii) a dialysate circuit including a dialysate circulation pump in fluid communication with the dialyzer, the dialysate circuit further including a sorbent cartridge for cleaning used dialysate, (iv) a dialysate reservoir, (v) a reservoir pump in fluid communication with the dialysate circuit and the dialysate reservoir, (vi) a supply of concentrate for reconstituting dialysate in the dialysate circuit, and (vii) wherein the hemodialysis system is configured to electronically weigh the dialysate reservoir and the supply of concentrate.

Claims

1. A hemodialysis system comprising:

a dialyzer;

a blood circuit including a blood pump in fluid communication with the dialyzer;

a dialysate circuit including a dialysate circulation pump in fluid communication with the dialyzer, the dialysate circuit further including a sorbent cartridge for cleaning used dialysate;

a dialysate reservoir;

a reservoir pump in fluid communication with the dialysate circuit and the dialysate reservoir;

a supply of concentrate for reconstituting dialysate in the dialysate circuit; and

wherein the hemodialysis system is configured to electronically weigh the dialysate reservoir and the supply of concentrate.

2. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein the dialysate reservoir holds an initial batch of dialysate.

3. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein the dialysate reservoir and the supply of concentrate are weighed by a same electronic balance.

4. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein the reservoir pump is positioned and arranged to also pump concentrate from the concentrate supply.

5. The hemodialysis system of claim 4, which includes a first valve positioned between the dialysis reservoir and the reservoir pump and a second valve positioned between the concentrate supply and the reservoir pump.

6. A hemodialysis system comprising:

a dialyzer;

a blood circuit including a blood pump in fluid communication with the dialyzer;

a dialysate circuit including a dialysate circulation pump in fluid communication with the dialyzer, the dialysate circuit further including a sorbent cartridge for cleaning used dialysate;

a container holding an initial supply of dialysate;

a container pump in fluid communication with the dialysate circuit and the container; and

wherein the container holding the initial supply of dialysate is used later to collect ultrafiltration removed from a patient using the system.

7. The hemodialysis system of claim 6, wherein the container pump is positioned and arranged to pump the initial supply of dialysate, and which includes a second pump positioned and arranged to pump ultrafiltration to the container.

8. The hemodialysis system of claim 6, which includes a valve configured to selectively allow dialysate removed from the dialyzer to be directed to the sorbent cartridge or to the container as ultrafiltration.

9. The hemodialysis system of claim 6, which includes a first valve positioned between the dialyzer and the container pump and a second valve positioned between the container pump and the sorbent cartridge.

10. The hemodialysis system of claim 6, which includes a check valve positioned and arranged to prevent regenerated dialysate exiting the sorbent cartridge from reentering the sorbent cartridge.

11. The hemodialysis system of claim 6, which includes a sensor positioned and arranged in the blood circuit for preventing air from being delivered to the patient.

12. The hemodialysis system of claim 6, which includes a sensor positioned and arranged to monitor regenerated dialysate exiting the sorbent cartridge.

13. The hemodialysis system of claim 6, which includes a sensor positioned and arranged to monitor an efficiency of the system in removing toxins.

14. The hemodialysis system of claim 6, which includes a concentrate supply in fluid communication with the dialysate circuit and a sensor positioned and arranged so that its output can be used to control a rate of flow from the concentrate supply.

15. The hemodialysis system of claim 6, which includes a weigh scale for weighing the container.

16. A hemodialysis system comprising:

a dialyzer;

a blood circuit including a blood pump in fluid communication with the dialyzer;

a dialysate circuit including a dialysate circulation pump in fluid communication with the dialyzer, the dialysate circuit further including a sorbent cartridge for cleaning used dialysate;

a concentrate reservoir;

a reservoir pump in fluid communication with the dialysate circuit and the concentrate reservoir; and

an electronic weigh scale positioned and arranged to electronically weigh the concentrate reservoir.

17. The hemodialysis system of claim 16, which further includes a dialysate supply for supplying dialysate to the dialysate circuit.

18. The hemodialysis system of claim 17, wherein the reservoir pump is positioned and arranged to pump dialysate from the dialysate supply to the dialysate circuit.

19. The hemodialysis system of claim 17, wherein the electronic weigh scale is further configured to weigh the dialysate supply.

20. A hemodialysis method comprising:

weighing an initial supply of dialysate in a container;

pumping the initial supply of dialysate from the container via a pump through a dialysate circuit, the circuit in fluid communication with a dialyzer;

circulating blood from a patient through the dialyzer to clean the blood;

cleaning dialysate that has passed through the dialyzer for reintroduction into the dialyzer; and

pumping concentrate using the pump into the dialysate circuit to reconstitute the dialysate.

21. A hemodialysis method comprising:

circulating dialysate through a dialysate circuit, the circuit in fluid communication with a dialyzer;

circulating blood from a patient through the dialyzer to clean the blood;

delivering concentrate to the dialysate circuit;

removing ultrafiltration from the dialysate circuit; and

weighing the dialysate pumped through the dialysate circuit and at least one other of the concentrate pumped to the dialysate circuit or the ultrafiltration removed from the dialysate circuit.
