Abstract

A method of selecting a mode for an SPS receiver includes selecting either a first mode or a second mode for the SPS receiver based on a comparison between an output power of a communications transceiver and a mode switch point wherein the mode switch point is a power value. The first mode corresponds to a first bias current value of the SPS receiver, the second mode corresponds to a second bias current value of the SPS receiver, and the first bias current value is different from the second bias current value.

Claims

1. A method of selecting a mode for an SPS receiver, the method comprising:

selecting either a first mode or a second mode for the SPS receiver based on a comparison between an output power of a communications transceiver and a mode switch point wherein the mode switch point is a power value;

wherein the first mode corresponds to a first bias current value of the SPS receiver, the second mode corresponds to a second bias current value of the SPS receiver, and the first bias current value is different from the second bias current value.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining the mode switch point based on a communications network environment of a mobile device.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising determining the mode switch point based on a probability density function of the output power.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising performing polling to determine if the output power exceeds the mode switch point.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the mode switch point is a first mode switch point, and further comprising:

transitioning from selecting the first mode to selecting the second mode based on the output power rising above the first mode switch point; and

transitioning from selecting the second mode to selecting the first mode based on the output power dropping below a second mode switch point wherein the second mode switch point is lower than the first mode switch point.

6. A mobile device comprising:

a communications transceiver;

a satellite positioning system (SPS) receiver; and

a processor configured to select either a first mode or a second mode for the SPS receiver based on a comparison between an output power of the communications transceiver and a mode switch point wherein the mode switch point is a power value;

wherein the first mode corresponds to a first bias current value of the SPS receiver, the second mode corresponds to a second bias current value of the SPS receiver, and the first bias current value is different from the second bias current value.

7. The mobile device of claim 6 wherein the processor is further configured to determine the mode switch point based on a communications network environment of the mobile device.

8. The mobile device of claim 7 wherein the processor is further configured to determine the mode switch point based on a probability density function of the output power.

9. The mobile device of claim 6 wherein the processor is further configured to perform polling to determine if the output power exceeds the mode switch point.

10. The mobile device of claim 6 wherein the mode switch point is a first mode switch point, and the processor is further configured to:

transition from selecting the first mode to selecting the second mode based on the output power rising above the first mode switch point; and

transition from selecting the second mode to selecting the first mode based on the output power dropping below a second mode switch point wherein the second mode switch point is lower than the first mode switch point.

11. An apparatus for selecting a mode for an SPS receiver, the apparatus comprising:

means for selecting either a first mode or a second mode for the SPS receiver based on a comparison between an output power of a communications transceiver and a mode switch point wherein the mode switch point is a power value;

wherein the first mode corresponds to a first bias current value of the SPS receiver, the second mode corresponds to a second bias current value of the SPS receiver, and the first bias current value is different from the second bias current value.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising means for determining the mode switch point based on a communications network environment of a mobile device.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 further comprising means for determining the mode switch point based on a probability density function of the output power.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 further comprising means for performing polling to determine if the output power exceeds the mode switch point.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the mode switch point is a first mode switch point, and further comprising:

means for transitioning from selecting the first mode to selecting the second mode based on the output power rising above the first mode switch point; and

means for transitioning from selecting the second mode to selecting the first mode based on the output power dropping below a second mode switch point wherein the second mode switch point is lower than the first mode switch point.

16. An article comprising at least one storage medium having stored thereon instructions executable by one or more processors to:

select either a first mode or a second mode for an SPS receiver based on a comparison between an output power of a communications transceiver and a mode switch point wherein the mode switch point is a power value;

wherein the first mode corresponds to a first bias current value of the SPS receiver, the second mode corresponds to a second bias current value of the SPS receiver, and the first bias current value is different from the second bias current value.

17. The article of claim 16 wherein the instructions executable by the one or more processors further comprise instructions to determine the mode switch point based on a communications network environment of a mobile device.

18. The article of claim 17 wherein the instructions executable by the one or more processors further comprise instructions to determine the mode switch point based on a probability density function of the output power.

19. The article of claim 16 wherein the instructions executable by the one or more processors further comprise instructions to perform polling to determine if the output power exceeds the mode switch point.

20. The article of claim 16 wherein the mode switch point is a first mode switch point, and the instructions executable by the one or more processors further comprise instructions to:

transition from selecting the first mode to selecting the second mode based on the output power rising above the first mode switch point; and

transition from selecting the second mode to selecting the first mode based on the output power dropping below a second mode switch point wherein the second mode switch point is lower than the first mode switch point.
