Abstract

A pump for delivering insulin to a user. The pump comprises a pump mechanism and a meal-bolus program module. The meal-bolus program module is programmed to control the pump mechanism to deliver a meal bolus. An alarm program module is in data communication with the alarm, the timer, and the meal-bolus program module. The alarm module is programmed to generate an alarm signal when the meal-bolus program module does not control the pump mechanism to deliver a meal bolus within a predetermined period of time.

7. A pump for delivering insulin to a user, the pump comprising:

a pump mechanism, an alarm, and a timer;

a meal bolus program module, the meal bolus program module programmed to control the pump mechanism to deliver a meal bolus; and

an alarm program module in data communication with the alarm, the timer, and the meal bolus program module, the alarm program module programmed to receive and store a starting time of day and an ending time of day defining an interval for a missed meal bolus alarm and an indication of whether to enable or disable the stored missed meal bolus alarm, the alarm program module further programmed to generate an alarm signal when the meal bolus program module does not control the pump mechanism to deliver a meal bolus within the interval when the missed meal bolus alarm is enabled.

8. The pump of claim 7, wherein the starting time of day occurs before an expected meal time.

9. The pump of claim 7, wherein the alarm module is programmed to receive a plurality of starting times of day and a plurality of ending times of day defining a plurality of intervals for a plurality of missed meal bolus alarms.

10. The pump of claim 9, wherein the alarm program module is further programmed to allow each stored missed meal bolus alarm to be selectively enabled or disabled.

The pump of claim 7, further comprising a second alarm program module in data communication with the alarm and the timer, the second alarm program module program programmed to generate an alarm signal for a type of alarm different from the missed meal bolus alarm based on a predetermined event associated with the different type of alarm.

The pump of claim 7, wherein the meal bolus program module is programmed to control the pump mechanism to deliver the meal bolus as a standard bolus, an extended bolus or a combination bolus, wherein the standard bolus delivers the bolus at a maximum rate of the pump mechanism, the extended bolus delivers the bolus over an extended period of time at a rate lower than the maximum rate and the combination bolus delivers a portion of insulin at the maximum rate and a portion of insulin over an extended period of time at a rate lower than the maximum rate.

21. A pump for delivering insulin to a user, the pump comprising:

a pump mechanism, an alarm, and a timer;

a meal bolus program module, the meal bolus program module programmed to control the pump mechanism to deliver a meal bolus; and

an alarm program module in data communication with the alarm, the timer, and the meal bolus program module, the alarm program module programmed to receive and store a time as associated with a missed meal bolus alarm and an indication of whether to enable or disable the stored missed meal bolus alarm, the alarm program module further programmed to generate an alarm signal based on the time when the meal bolus program module does not control the pump mechanism to deliver a meal bolus when the missed meal bolus alarm is enabled.

22. The pump of claim 21, wherein the time is a time of day and the alarm program module is programmed to generate the alarm signal if the time of day occurs without a meal bolus being delivered by the meal bolus program module.

23. The pump of claim 21, wherein the time is a length of time and the alarm program module is programmed to generate the alarm signal if the length of time lapses without a meal bolus being delivered by the meal bolus program module.

24. The pump of claim 21, wherein the time is an interval and the alarm program module is programmed to generate the alarm signal if a meal bolus is not delivered by the meal bolus program module during the interval.

25. The pump of claim 24, wherein the interval is defined by a start time and an end time.

26. The pump of claim 21, wherein the alarm program module is programmed to receive and store a plurality of times each being associated with one of a plurality of missed meal bolus alarms.

27. The pump of claim 22, wherein the alarm program module is further programmed to allow each stored missed meal bolus alarm to be selectively enabled or disabled.

The pump of claim 21, further comprising a second alarm program module in data communication with the alarm and the timer, the second alarm program module program programmed to generate an alarm signal for a type of alarm different from the missed meal bolus alarm based on a predetermined event associated with the different type of alarm.

The pump of claim 21, wherein the meal bolus program module is programmed to control the pump mechanism to deliver the meal bolus as a standard bolus, an extended bolus or a combination bolus, wherein the standard bolus delivers the bolus at a maximum rate of the pump mechanism, the extended bolus delivers the bolus over an extended period of time at a rate lower than the maximum rate and the combination bolus delivers a portion of insulin at the maximum rate and a portion of insulin over an extended period of time at a rate lower than the maximum rate.
