Abstract

A dental implant including an implant body having a top surface, and at least one non-annular cutaway portion longitudinally extending downwardly from the top surface along one side of the body and outwardly to the periphery, and a method for making the implant. The implant body preferably includes a body portion and a head portion integrally formed with the body portion, the body portion has a periphery and the head portion has a non-circular periphery, and the periphery of the head portion is smaller than the periphery of the body portion.

Claims

1. A dental implant for implantation in a jaw bone, comprising:

an implant body sized for positioning of an intrabony portion thereof within said jaw bone;

said body having at least one side surface defining an inner boundary of a non-annular cutaway volume longitudinally extending along one side of said body where comprising said intrabony portion; and

said side surface being positionable to place said volume between said side surface and a portion of said jaw bone to which said side surface is the closest implant surface, when said body is implanted.

2. The dental implant according to claim 1, further comprising:

a top surface; and

a screw-receiving bore extending downwards from the top surface for coupling an abutment to the implant.

3. The dental implant according to claim 2, wherein said bore is not concentric with the longitudinal axis of the implant.

4. The dental implant according to claim 2, Wherein said screw-receiving bore is formed at an angle to a longitudinal axis of the implant.

6. The dental implant according to claim 1, wherein said at least one side surface is tapered.

7. The dental implant according to claim 1, wherein said at least one side surface ends in a shoulder extending outwardly to the periphery from said side surface.

8. The dental implant according to claim 1, wherein said at least one side surface extends along the entire length of the body.

9. The dental implant according to claim 1, wherein said at least one side surface defining an inner boundary of a cutaway volume defines inner boundaries of two, oppositely disposed, cutaway volumes longitudinally extending along opposite sides of said body.

10. The dental implant according to claim 1 wherein said at least one side surface defining an inner boundary of a cutaway volume defines inner boundaries of three cutaway volumes longitudinally extending along sides of said body, equidistant around the body.

11. The dental implant according to claim 1, wherein:

said implant body includes a body portion and a head portion integrally formed with said body portion;

said body portion having a periphery and said head portion having a non-circular periphery;

said body portion and said head portion having lengths such that a portion of said head portion is positioned below bone level in said jaw bone when said implant is implanted in a jaw bone bore sized to receive it; and

wherein the periphery of said head portion is smaller than the periphery of the body portion.

17. The dental implant according to claim 1, wherein:

said implant body includes a body portion and a head portion integrally formed with said body portion;

said body portion and said head portion are longitudinally sized such that a portion of said head portion is positioned below bone level in said jaw bone when said implant is implanted in a jaw bone bore sized to receive it; and

said portion of said head portion comprises a portion of said side surface.

18. The dental implant according to claim 1, wherein:

said body comprises a threaded region having threads; and

said cutaway comprises an interruption in said threads.

19. The dental implant according to claim 1, wherein:

said jaw bone portion to which said side surface is the closest implant surface when said body is implanted comprises at least one of a portion of a buccal bone plate, a portion of a mandibular ridge, or a portion of bone separating said implant from an adjacent implant.

20. The dental implant according to claim 1, wherein:

said side surface is flat or convex extending along the width of said bone implant.

21. The dental implant according to claim 2, wherein:

said side surface is at least as wide as the diameter of said screw-receiving bore.

22. The dental implant according to claim 3, wherein:

said cutaway extends to a point not radially further from the central longitudinal axis of said body than a radius of said non-concentric bore.

23. A method of encouraging bone growth in a jaw bone near a dental implant, comprising:

selecting a dental implant with a cutaway section in an intrabony portion thereof;

inserting the dental implant into a bore in said jaw bone, adjacent to a thin portion of bone;

said inserting comprising orienting a volume extending through a region of said cutaway section such that said volume is adapted to fill with bone thickness gained by said thin portion of bone; and

allowing new bone growth from said thin portion of bone into said volume.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein said implant is threaded, and said inserting comprises screwing insertion.

25. The method of claim 23, wherein said thin portion of bone comprises a critical area prone to bone resorption.

26. The method of claim 23, wherein said implant comprises a screw-receiving bore, and said orienting a volume comprises positioning a center of said screw-receiving bore lingually relative to said bore in said jaw bone.

27. The method of claim 23, wherein said new bone growth is from a buccal bone plate.

28. The method of claim 23, wherein said new bone growth is from a mandibular ridge.

29. The method of claim 23, wherein said new bone growth is from a portion of bone adjacent to another bone implant.
