Abstract

A system determines a time period used for controlling a backlight and other processing device power consumption related characteristics to more closely reflect user intent determined in response to an operation state of an application, for the system determines the operation state based on, activity of an application in requesting transmission and reception of data, display screen update and completion of presentation of a view configuration (display area) The system reduces inadvertent turning off of a backlight and other device power consumption features.

Claims

1. A method for controlling a time period of activating a backlight used for illumination of a screen of a media device, the method comprising:

identifying a network use state concurrently with controlling a timer used to turn off a backlight;

determining whether an executable application having requested transmission or reception of data, is activated, in response to a result of the identification showing the network use state indicates active transmission or reception of data; and

controlling the timer in response to the determination the application is active.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein controlling the timer comprises initializing a time period measured by the timer, when the application is active.

3. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein controlling the driving of the timer comprises continuously driving the timer in response to an application activity state.

4. The method as claimed in claim 1, wherein determining whether the application is active comprises determining whether the application is active, in response to a display state of the application.

5. The method as claimed in claim 4, wherein determining whether the application is active comprises determining the application is active in response to an image display area associated with the application being displayed.

6. The method as claimed in claim 4, wherein determining whether the application is active comprises determining that a particular application that a user has selected from a plurality of different applications is in an active state, when multiple image display areas associated with the different applications are concurrently displayed.

7. A method for controlling a time period of activating a backlight used for illumination of a screen of a media device, the method comprising:

identifying whether a screen display area is updated with data concurrently with controlling a timer used to turn off the backlight; and

controlling the timer in response to the determination the screen display area is updated in the display area.

8. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein controlling the driving of the timer comprises initializing a time period measured by the timer when the screen display area is updated, and identifying whether the screen display area is updated within a predetermined time period.

9. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein controlling the timer comprises turning off the backlight when the screen is not updated in the display area.

10. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein identifying whether the screen is updated comprises identifying whether the screen is updated in a display area associated with a function of the application.

11. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein identifying whether the screen is updated comprises identifying whether the screen is updated in the display area associated with operation of a predetermined function of the application.

12. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein identifying whether the screen is updated comprises identifying whether the screen is updated in a display area designated by a user.

13. The method as claimed in claim 12, further comprising:

before identifying whether the screen is updated,

changing to a set display state when the user makes a request for designating a display area and including identifying whether data is updated in the display area; and

receiving data designating a display area in response to user command in the changed display state.

14. The method as claimed in claim 13, wherein changing to the set display state comprises:

generating a layer usable for user designation of the display area;

causing the generated layer to overlap layers used in a previous display state; and

displaying the generated layer overlapping the layers used in the previous display state.

15. A method for controlling a time period of activating a backlight used for illumination of a screen of a media device, the method comprising:

identifying whether a request by an executable application for loading data comprising content of a screen display area is made concurrently with controlling a timer used to turn off the backlight;

loading the requested data; and

controlling the timer in response to determining the screen display area of the application which has made the request for loading the data, is completed.

16. The method as claimed in claim 15, wherein controlling the driving of the timer comprises controlling the driving of the timer to prevent the backlight from being turned off until the presentation of the screen display area of the application is completed.

17. An apparatus which controls a time period of driving a backlight, the apparatus comprising:

a communication unit;

a timer which counts a time period used to turn off a backlight; and

a controller configured for identifying a network use state of the communication unit concurrently with controlling the timer and for determining an application is active in response to an identification the network use state indicates the application has requested transmission and reception of data using the communication unit, controlling the timer.

18. The apparatus as claimed in claim 17, wherein the controller initializes the time period measured by the timer, when the controller determines that the application is in an active state.

19. The apparatus as claimed in claim 17, wherein the controller performs a control operation to continuously drive the timer, when the controller determines an application activity state.

20. The apparatus as claimed in claim 17, wherein the controller determines whether the application is active, based on a display state of the application.

21. The apparatus as claimed in claim 20, wherein the controller determines that the application is in an active state in response to data provided by the application being displayed in a display area.

22. The apparatus as claimed in claim 17, wherein the controller determines that a selected application of a plurality of different applications is in an active state, when multiple display areas associated with the plurality of different applications are displayed.

23. An apparatus which controls a time period of driving a backlight, the apparatus comprising:

a display unit having a backlight;

a timer which counts a time period used to determine time to switch off the backlight; and

a controller configured for identifying whether a screen is updated with data in a display area of the display unit concurrently with controlling the timer, and for controlling operation of the timer in response to the identification of whether the screen is updated in the display area.

24. The apparatus as claimed in claim 23, wherein the controller initializes the time period measured by the timer, in response to the controller determining that the screen is updated in the display area.

25. The apparatus as claimed in claim 23, wherein the controller performs a control operation continuously operating the timer, in response to the controller determines whether the screen display area is updated.

26. The apparatus as claimed in claim 23, wherein the controller identifies whether the screen display area associated with a function of an application is updated.

27. The apparatus as claimed in claim 23, wherein the controller identifies whether the screen is updated with data in the display area associated with a function of an application.

28. The apparatus as claimed in claim 23, wherein the controller identifies whether the screen is updated in the display area designated by a user.

29. The apparatus as claimed in claim 28, wherein the controller changes a display state of the display unit to a set display state, when the user makes a request for designating a screen display area for determining whether a user is actively using the apparatus, and receives data designating the screen display area in response to user command in the changed display state.

30. The apparatus as claimed in claim 29, wherein the controller initiates generation of a layer for presentation of a user designated screen display area, the layer overlapping a layer used in a previous display state.

31. An apparatus for controlling a time period of driving a backlight for media device screen illumination, the apparatus comprising:

a timer for measuring a time period for activating the backlight; and

a controller configured for,

identifying whether a request by an executable application for loading data comprising content of a screen display area is made concurrently with controlling a timer used to turn off the backlight,

loading the requested data and

controlling the timer in response to determining the screen display area of the application which has made the request for loading the data, is completed.

32. The apparatus as claimed in claim 31, wherein the controller controls operation of the timer to prevent the backlight from being turned off until presentation of the screen display area of the application is completed.

33. A method for controlling a time period of activating a power consuming function of a media device, the method comprising:

identifying a network use state concurrently with controlling a timer used to turn off a power consuming function;

determining whether an executable application having requested transmission or reception of data, is activated, in response to a result of the identification showing the network use state indicates active transmission or reception of data; and

controlling the timer to one of, (a) inhibit de-activation of the power consuming function and (b) inhibit a power saving mode, in response to the determination the application is active.
